This paper presents a vision-based approach for mobile robot localization. The environmental model is topological. The new approach uses a constellation of different types of affine covariant regions to characterize a place. This type of representation permits a reliable and distinctive environment modeling. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated using a database of panoramic images from different rooms. Additionally, we compare different combinations of complementary feature region detectors to find the one that achieves the best results. Our experimental results show promising results for this new localization method. Additionally, similarly to what happens with single detectors, different combinations exhibit different strengths and weaknesses depending on the situation, suggesting that a context-aware method to combine the different detectors would improve the localization results.

Information visualization systems allow users to produce insights, innovations and discoveries. Evaluating such tools is a challenging task and the goal of BELIV'08 is to make a step ahead in the comprehension of such a complex activity. Current evaluation methods exhibit noticeable limitations and researchers in the area experiment some frustration with evaluation processes that are time consuming and too often leading to unsatisfactory results. The most used evaluation metrics such as task time completion and number of errors appear insufficient to quantify the quality of an information visualization system;thus the name of the workshop: "beyond time and errors ...".

In order to design a user interface of a secure interactive application, a method is provided to designers with guidance in designing an adequate security information feedback using a library of user interface design patterns integrating security and usability. The resulting feedback is then evaluated against a set of design/evaluation criteria called human-computerinteraction for Security (HCI-S). In this way, notifications combining two or more channels required to achieve an effective feedback in case of a security issue are explicitly incorporated in the development life cycle. With this proposal we intend to complement previous efforts finding equilibrium between usability and security for interactive web applications.

A motivationally-aware version of the Ecolab system was developed with the aim of improving the learners' motivation. To gain some insight into the effects of motivational modeling on students' affective states, we observed the affect of 180 students interacting with either Ecolab or M-Ecolab. The affective states considered were based on existing coding schemes [10]. The results suggest that the motivationally-aware tutoring system seems to maintain students' delight over time. However, it seems the motivational interventions did not create new "virtuous cycles" of positive affect [10], or disrupt "vicious cycles", where a student persists in a negative affective state.

In this paper we describe a pen-based user interface for easy and natural user interaction with a wall projection display. VisualPen is a vision-based system for real-time detection and tracking of a pen that completely replaces mouse and keyboard. The low computational complexity of its algorithms renders it easy to implement with low-cost, lowpower embedded hardware, thus allowing portability and integrability. The architecture of the system is described, and experimental results are presented and commented.
In this paper, we present ThumbSpace, a software-based interaction technique that provides general one-handed thumb operation of touchscreenbased mobile devices. Our goal is to provide accurate selection of all interf...

Social interaction and collaboration are essential to the emotional and cognitive development of young children [40]. Constructionism [32] is a learning theory where children learn as they build or construct a public artifact. Creative activities that promote collaboration, especially those based on principles of constructionism, provide enhanced learning opportunities for young children. Mobile devices can support the learning experience as children can create artifacts in various contexts. The proposed research incorporates collaboration, constructionism, children, stories and mobile technologies;specifically investigating developmentally appropriate interfaces to support mobile collaboration for young children.
