In this paper we describe a pen-based user interface for easy and natural user interaction with a wall projection display. VisualPen is a vision-based system for real-time detection and tracking of a pen that completely replaces mouse and keyboard. The low computational complexity of its algorithms renders it easy to implement with low-cost, low-power embedded hardware, thus allowing portability and integrability. The architecture of the system is described, and experimental results are presented and commented.
Based on many experiences of developing interactive systems by the authors, a framework for the description and analysis of interaction has been developed. The dimensions of this multimodal interaction space have been...

This paper addresses the problem of making text mining results more comprehensible to humanities scholars, journalists, intelligence analysts, and other researchers, in order to support the analysis of text collections. Our system, FeatureLens1, visualizes a text collection at several levels of granularity and enables users to explore interesting text patterns. The current implementation focuses on frequent itemsets of n-grams, as they capture the repetition of exact or similar expressions in the collection. Users can find meaningful co-occurrences of text patterns by visualizing them within and across documents in the collection. This also permits users to identify the temporal evolution of usage such as increasing, decreasing or sudden appearance of text patterns. The interface could be used to explore other text features as well. Initial studies suggest that FeatureLens helped a literary scholar and 8 users generate new hypotheses and interesting insights using 2 text collections. Copyright 2007 ACM.

We seek to close the gap between software engineering (SE) and human-computerinteraction (HCI) by indicating interdisciplinary interfaces throughout the different phases of SE and HCI lifecycles. As agile representatives of SE, Extreme Programming (XP) and Agile Modeling (AM) contribute helpful principles and practices for a common engineering approach. We present a cross-discipline user interface design lifecycle that integrates SE and HCI under the umbrella of agile development. Melting IT budgets, pressure of time and the demand to build better software in less time must be supported by traveling as light as possible. We did, therefore, choose not just to mediate both disciplines. Following our surveys, a rather radical approach best fits the demands of engineering organizations.

It is commonly acknowledged that 'smart' environments, interactive architecture and 'smart' homes will defi ne the next cutting edge in architectural research. Most critics agree that one of the fi rst problems that 'smart' homes will help to address is that of spiraling costs of healthcare and aging-in-place. This may be true for urban settings where there is the fi nancial feasibility for such technologies but what about rural America? It has been conclusively proven that rural America suffers from a lack of healthcare (delivery and access). Prior research (Mathew 2005) has also established that a rural home is different from an urban home. Will technologies designed for the urban home work in a rural setting? And do rural people carry the same attitudes and biases towards technology? This paper continues our research in the design of 'smart' rural environments. It summarizes fi ndings from focus group studies conducted in rural communities that help us to understand attitudes of people towards 'smart' technology. We will use these fi ndings to examine the feasibility of ubiquitous computing and 'smart' spaces in rural areas. In conclusion, we will present guidelines to help designers in the creation of technology to augment healthy aging in rural home settings.
