As Queer human-computer interaction (HCI) becomes an established part of the larger field, both in terms of research on and with queer populations and in terms of employing queering theories and methods, the role of queer researchers has become a timely topic of discussion. However, these discussions have largely centered around member-researcher status and positionality when working with queer populations. Based on insights gathered at multiple ACM events over the past two years, we identified two pressing issues: (1) we need to better support queer people doing HCI research not specific to queer populations, and (2) we need to identify how to best support member-researchers in leading Queer HCI while including collaborators beyond the queer community. This Special Interest group (SIG) aims to directly address these challenges by convening a broad community of queer researchers and allies, working not only on explicitly-queer topics but across a broad range of HCI topics. © 2021 Owner/Author.

The article discusses an autonomous robot for the AAAI Robot Challenge. In an attempt to solve as much of the AAAI Robot Challenge as possible, five research institutions representing academia, industry and government integrated their research into a single robot named Grace. The article describes the first-year effort by the Grace team, including not only the various techniques each participant brought to Grace but also the difficult integration effort itself.

Automated vehicles are expected to become a part of the road traffic in the near future. This upcoming change raises concerns on how human road users, e.g., cyclists or pedestrians, would interact with them to ensure safe communication on the road. Previous work focused primarily on the scenario in which a young adult without impairments crosses a street in front of an automated vehicle. Several road user groups, such as children, seniors, or people with special needs, in roles of pedestrians and cyclists, are not considered in this scenario. On top of this, cultural differences are rarely considered. To ensure that future traffic is safe and accessible for all citizens, we aim to address inclusive communication between automated vehicles and vulnerable road users. In this workshop, we will discuss and exchange methods, tools, and scenarios applicable for inclusive communication, identify the most relevant research gaps, and connect people for future collaborations.

human-computer interaction researchers have explored how to design technologies to support people with dementia (PwD) and their caregivers, but limited attention has been given to how to facilitate music therapy in dementia care. The use of music to help manage the symptoms of dementia is often guided by a music therapist who adapts the intervention to respond to the changing needs of the person living with dementia. However, as the incidence of dementia increases worldwide, individualised therapy programs are less feasible, making it valuable to consider technology-based approaches. In this paper, we analyze data from case studies of home-based music therapy training interventions with two families. The findings show that embodied interactions supported the therapist in responding to the needs of the PwD and built an empathic environment that empowered the caregivers’ learning. We discuss opportunities and challenges for designing technologies that support family caregivers’ therapy-informed music use in dementia care.

We are proposing a new facial expression recognition model which introduces 30+ detailed facial expressions recognisable by any artificial intelligence interacting with a human. Throughout this research, we introduce two categories for the emotions, namely, dominant emotions and complementary emotions. In this research paper the complementary emotion is recognised by using the eye region if the dominant emotion is angry, fearful or sad, and if the dominant emotion is disgust or happiness the complementary emotion is mainly conveyed by the mouth. In order to verify the tagged dominant and complementary emotions, randomly chosen people voted for the recognised multi-emotional facial expressions. The average results of voting are showing that 73.88% of the voters agree on the correctness of the recognised multi-emotional facial expressions.

Designing to support motivation is an increasingly important issue, especially as pervasive technologies are used to facilitate various healthy behaviour changes. There are many motivation theories but these do not map specifically to inform design. In 'Motivating Mobility' we explore the lived experiences of motivation of people with stroke, in order to design rehabilitation technologies. Motivation varies between people, between contexts and over time and can be 'difficult to express', particularly for those with communication problems. We describe development of a theoretically based toolkit, principled in both content and form, and using multiple modes of communication, aimed at gathering motivational requirements in order to inspire design. We show use of the toolkit, discuss the rich data collected and reflect on how well the approach works and ties requirements, via their elicitation tool, back to theory. This toolkit has potential to inform design for motivational effect in similar pervasive health applications. © 2011 ICST.

In this work two databases for the Joint Challenge on Dominant and Complementary Emotion Recognition Using Micro Emotion Features and Head-Pose Estimation1 are introduced. Head pose estimation paired with and detailed emotion recognition have become very important in relation to human-computer interaction. The 3D head pose database, SASE, is a 3D database acquired with Microsoft Kinect 2 camera, including RGB and depth information of different head poses which is composed by a total of 30000 frames with annotated markers, including 32 male and 18 female subjects. For the dominant and complementary emotion database, iCVMEFED, includes 31250 images with different emotions of 115 subjects whose gender distribution is almost uniform. For each subject there are 5 samples. The emotions are composed by 7 basic emotions plus neutral, being defined as complementary and dominant pairs. The emotion associated to the images were labeled with the support of psychologists.

The inclusion of the elderly in the digital world is still quite incipient in several parts of the world. The lack of satisfaction of the elderly in the use of computational applications is related to the lack of adaptations to their limitations. The feeling of frustration, fueled by insecurity and disorientation, keeps the elderly away from technology. This study proposes a detailed methodology using heuristic evaluation based on works established in the literature on usability and accessibility, taking into account the aging of the population. To validate the set of heuristics, a case study on two banking applications was carried out.

(Information Technology) in 1991 and 1993 respectively he is also a member of the Ergonomics Society. His main research interests lie in the field of training design and human–computer interaction in support of the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet. Alan R. Lees:is a human factors engineer with Rolls-Royce and Associates Ltd. Derby. A graduate of Loughborough University of Technology he has a B.Sc. in Ergonomics and an M.Sc. in human factors and IT Systems gained in 1993 and 1995 respectively. His research interests lie in the field of training needs analysis and technology introduction techniques.

human factors (HF) engineers have contributed to the reduction of human error, by improving user performance through the design of the user interface. However, there still remains a requirement for user training. This is especially true for complex, high risk processes employing new technology. Reduced manning and downskilling are putting increased pressures on users who, in many activities, still remain the last level of safety protection. In responding to this need, HF engineers now employ a range of tools and methods during the design process, which assist in identifying the training media and training design. Training needs analysis (TNA) offers a structured methodology to facilitate the information gathering process and identify any shortfall between current user performance and that demanded by new technology and designs. By the use of these methods and tools the potential for human error can be reduced, for the following reasons: (a) improved user performance (b) better designed and more efficient training systems. Existing TNA methods have been better suited to the study of existing equipment. This paper describes the training requirements process, and proposes a usable methodology for contractors conducting a TNA in the design of new systems/equipment. It is of particular use where information on the operation or maintenance may be limited.
