The Digital Boundaries exhibition includes works that use multimedia to address issues of multiculturalism, identity, and awareness. By placing technology in new contexts to explore multimedia's impact on culture (and vice versa) we create a space for the discussion of new ideas and create an interdisciplinary impact by reinforcing a dialogue between the arts and multimedia communities. We discuss our motivation, the exhibition theme, the works selected, and their potential technical impact.
Discovering relevant publications for researchers is a nontrivial task. Recommender systems can reduce the effort required to find relevant publications. We suggest using a visualization- and user-centered interaction...

Higher education (HE) is increasingly globalised, involving partnerships between institutions in different countries. There is little research available on such educational partnerships in HE. Just like learning experiences themselves, each educational partnership is unique but we propose a set of six factors to consider, which might help formulate the dimensions of future research. We reflect here on 6 years of partnerships between our university and colleges both in our own country (Scotland, UK) and Malaysia to deliver IT degree programmes, enabling a our student experience to be shared by non-traditional learners who cannot study in Edinburgh, due to work, family, financial and other commitments. Users' stories help us understand and meet stakeholders' needs, and plan future research. What emerges is evidence of an equivalent set of learning experiences, despite the geographic and cultural distances

Information and Communication Technology continue to be increasingly used in social development and poverty alleviation projects, known as Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) projects. However, most interventions either fail completely as a result of attempting to use inappropriate software development approaches and technology concepts in the different ICTD context or they only execute small scale prototypes without positive long-term social impact. We present a case study on how we combined and adapted, using an iterative action research refinement approach, established interaction design methods into a software development methodology supporting scalable long-term ICTD software projects: the Technical ICTD Methodology (TIM). Our case study is based on the experiences of a series of ICTD projects executed within a major software corporation over a period of more than five years.

Ease of use and navigation are important features when selecting a Content Management System (CMS). In this paper we compare two Learning Management Systems (LMS): Blackboard and Desire2Learn. For select administrative tasks we track the number of mouse clicks necessary, number of pages traversed, and data fields inputted. This comparison highlights some of the benefits and limitations between the two systems.

Much of the success of iconic interfaces has occurred within application domains in which a consistent metaphor can be maintained. However, this approach can prove problematic when icons are designed for cross-cultural applications-where a generic metaphor can often prove elusive. Even when a suitable metaphor can be found the problem remains of developing icons (within a given metaphorical framework) for all the functionality that may be required. Within certain application domains this difficulty has been overcome by means of the parallel use of more than one metaphor. This is certainly true of iconic interfaces to information delivery applications (where ‘book’ and ‘travel’ metaphors are relatively common). The universality of the book metaphor within modern culture and its relevance to many of the cognitive tasks involved in information delivery applications have provided the primary motivation for our adoption of this metaphor in much of our work. However, we have also used multiple metaphor techniques for certain types of application. In this paper we describe the inter-relationship that exists between icons and metaphors and discuss the problems of designing iconic interfaces that embed useful metaphors. Various case studies are used to illustrate the issues raised and some outline conclusions derived from our work in this area are then presented.
