This paper investigates modeling and control problems of the speed governing system of a hydro-generator unit with one upstream surge tank, driven by a Francis turbine. This governing system is organized into four main functional blocks, namely the hydrodynamic, mechanical, electrical, and servo subsystems. Mathematic models of the individual components are developed and are subsequently interconnected to obtain a model for the governor design. From the viewpoint of modern control theory, only a part of states of this speed governing system are measurable. By introducing an additional state variable, a reduced order sliding mode controller is presented. Simulation results illustrate the feasibility and robustness of the presented method.

Abstract In this paper a modeling method and a control approach is proposed for minimising both travel times and traffic emission on freeways. A simulation-based investigation among emission models is performed to determine the model to be engaged for a model-based control. The chosen model is imposed on a second-order macroscopic traffic model. A constrained LQ control is proposed for optimization. An emission-optimal control and a multicriteria (travel time and emission) optimization are compared to conventional, solely travel-time optimal control. Simulations prove that ramp metering can be used to reduce both emission and travel times on motorways.

In this paper we propose a Multi-frame Marked Point Process model for automatic target detection and tracking in Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) image sequences. For purposes of dealing with high ISAR noise, we obtain the optimal target sequence by an energy minimization process, which simultaneously considers the observed image data and prior geometric interaction constraints between the target appearances in the consecutive frames. Finally, a robust permanent scatterer detection step is introduced to support the target identification process. Evaluation is performed on real ISAR image sequences of ship targets.
