The objective of the discrete-time modeling tools is twofold. First, they give an insight into the basic ideas of discrete-time modeling of dc-dc converters for university students and interested power electronics specialists. Second, as it is being presented below, the interactive calculation tools facilitate the fast and simple model development in WEB browser after entering the basic circuit and load parameters. This feature can especially be useful for the practicing design engineers, since without long calculations with matrix functions the linearized discrete-time system model is immediately and automatically developed in both mathematical form (state-space equations and transfer functions in the Z domain) and also in graphical form (pole-zero map and bode plot).

This paper presents a novel approach for speed governing of hydro-turbine by means of a sliding mode controller. For selecting a group of parameters of the sliding surface, genetic algorithm is employed to search these parameters. For decreasing the chattering problem of the sliding mode controller, a fuzzy interface system is harnessed to regulate the controller gain. To verify the feasibility and robustness of the control method, simulation results from a hydro turbine unit with the controller designed by the presented procedure are given as an illustration.

PID controller has simple structure and easy applicability with strong performance robustness. Decentralized PID controller and decoupling PID controller are widely adopted in the control of two-input-two-output (TITO) processes. Firstly, a simple decoupling controller matrix and a desired dynamic decoupling controller matrix are designed according to the idea of coupling matrix. And then three schemes of controller including decentralized PID controller, simple PID decoupling controller and desired dynamic PID decoupling controller are provided based on the excellent characteristic of DDE. Lastly, the Monte-Carlo stochastic experiment is introduced to analyze performance robustness of the controllers. The simulation experiments illustrate that the simple decoupling control scheme has the ability of complete decoupling and better performance robustness.

In this paper, an efficient approach to improve the connectivity of any given network is provided by introducing an additional node into the network. More specifically, the additional node acts as a neighbor to certain pair of nodes in the network with only changing one link among the existing nodes. The location of the additional node is designed according to the current topology as well as the states, and it has been proved that, controlling the most-connected node will in general improve the convergence rate of the network. Moreover, the proposed method overcomes the dependence of the convergence rate on the Fiedler value. In particular, the convergence problem is converted to a standard stability problem by using the cooperative control Lyapunov function, and a state-feedback controller with switching logic in finding the observed node is designed to guarantee the fast convergence. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in speeding up consensus in a network.

Model based design methodology is increasingly being used in the development of software for embedded controllers for safety class applications. SCADE Suite is a set of tools that support model based design of software for embedded systems. The model validation activity in SCADE involves model simulation guided by set of test cases that are based on system requirements (Functional or blackbox) and structural coverage criteria like MC/DC (Whitebox). However, systematically devising a test case based on such criterion is not easy and often the designer is required to analyze the model to design a test sequence, which will meet the required criteria. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of a technique based on model checking to automate the generation of such test cases for SCADE models. For automatic test case generation, the tool SAL-ATG was used that can generate the test cases for the models developed in SAL specification language. MCIDC coverage criterion was adopted for generating the test goals to be covered by generated test cases.

This paper addresses the development of an automatic segmentation technique for detecting cell nuclei. The technique uses a new approach for segmenting nuclei in images taken from tissues with colon carcinoma. The segmentation problems encountered in these images and solved by the proposed technique are related to the non-uniform illumination on the background, out-of-focus nuclei, the physical structure of cells in the tissue section, the activity status of the cell and the clustered cell nuclei. First, the region growing method is used for accurate background detection. The separation regions between grouped cell nuclei are detected using the cross-correlation method and validated based on their link with the background. Then, the nuclei boundaries are identified by applying the watershed algorithm on the complemented distance transform of the binary image containing the selected separation lines.

The development of a novel Biologically-inspired (or Biomimetic) Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (BAUV) inspired by the Pacific electric ray is addressed. The design and hardware implementation of experimental prototypes of the "RayBot" BAUV are described. Extensive observations of live electric rays provided key biological inspirations in the development of the BAUV. As part of the effort, a six degree-of-freedom impulse-based multi-body approach for modeling and simulation of BAUVs was also developed and validated through comparison with experimental data.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms.

Based on internal model, distributed control scheme is adopted to achieve the objectives of asymptotic tracking and disturbance rejection in a networked uncertain system where both the reference inputs and disturbances are generated by an exosystem.
