Improving the control of shading blinds, lights, natural ventilation, and HVAC systems while satisfying human comfort requirements can result in significant energy cost savings with time-of-day electricity pricing. Traditionally, the above-mentioned devices are controlled separately. In this paper, a novel formulation for the integrated control and the corresponding solution methodology are presented. The problem is to minimize daily energy costs of lights and HVAC systems while satisfying equipment capacities, system dynamics, and human comfort. The problem is complicated since 1) individual rooms are coupled as they compete for the HVAC with limited capacity and nonlinear characteristics, and 2) the problem is believed to be NP-hard in view that decision variables are all discrete. A solution methodology that combines Lagrangian relaxation and stochastic dynamic programming is developed within the surrogate optimization framework to obtain near-optimal strategies. These strategies are further refined to become novel control rules for easy practical implementation. Numerical simulation results show that both of the above strategies can effectively reduce the total energy cost, and that the integrated control works better than selected traditional control strategies.

The operator usually uses his hands to perform manipulation tasks. She has to feel the reaction forces in high-precision manipulation. The mechanism applied in the human interface device for force and tactile feedback is the most challenging (and usually the most expensive) part of a telepresence device. Bilateral control is a common solution in these systems. However, the coupled force and position control loops have contradicting requirements. Usually, the human operator has to learn a lot until she can "feel the task" in her hand, even in direct manipulation. However, using the plasticity of the human brain sensory substitution can be used to achieve a cheaper and partially decoupled system. The main contribution of this paper is a model of human contrast vision, which is applied to feedback of the grasping force in a telemanipulation system in order to decouple the bilateral control and to achieve a less complex haptic device. A contrast model of a the human vision is introduced and it is applied for grasping force feedback via peripheral vision. The preliminary results are presented.

This paper is concerned with H_(2) and H_(infinity) filter design for discrete-time Markov jump systems. The usual assumption of mode-dependent design, where the current Markov mode is available to the filter at every instant of time is substituted by the case where that availability is subject to another Markov chain. In other words, the mode is transmitted to the filter through a network with given transmission failure probabilities. The problem is solved by modeling a system with N modes as another with 2N modes and cluster availability. We also treat the case where the transition probabilities are not exactly known and demonstrate our conditions for calculating an H_(infinity) norm bound are less conservative than the available results in the current literature. Numerical examples show the applicability of the proposed results.

Modelling of such systems is essential for traceable controller synthesis. In this paper we apply the TP Model Transformation to derive a polytopic representation of an LPV model where the time-delay is considered as parameter.
