An extension of the pairwise comparison matrix is considered when some comparisons are missing. A generalization of the eigenvector method for the incomplete case is introduced and discussed as well as the Logarithmic Least Squares Method. The uniqueness problem regarding both weighting methods is studied through the graph representation of pairwise comparison matrices. It is shown that the optimal completion/solution is unique if and only if the graph associated with the incomplete pairwise comparison matrix is connected. An algorithm is proposed for solving the eigenvalue minimization problem related to the generalization of the eigenvector method in the incomplete case. Numerical examples are presented for illustration of the methods discussed in the paper.

The most important issue in designing a data gathering algorithm is how to save energy of sensor nodes while meeting the requirement of application such as sensing are coverage. On the other hand, in the real applications, it is unrealistic to guarantee all sensors have the same energy because they have different energy consumption. In this paper, A cluster based data gathering protocol for heterogeneous energy WSNs (EDGA) is proposed. EDGA achieves a good performance in terms of lifetime by minimizing energy consumption for in-network communications and balancing the energy load. EDGA improves the cluster-based LEACH data gathering protocol, and adopts the weighted election probabilities of each node to handle the heterogeneous energy WSN. Moreover, it also introduces a simple but efficient approach to solve the intra-cluster coverage problem. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EDGA significantly outperforms LEACH, HEED in terms of network lifetime and the amount of data gathered in the heterogeneous energy network.

The topic of malware propagation in mobile wireless networks is gaining momentum among the research community, as actual vulnerabilities are revealed through recent outbreaks of worms. We introduce a defense strategy that quarantines the malware by reducing the communication range. This counter-measure faces us to a trade-off: reducing the communication range suppresses the spread of the malware, however, it also negatively affects the performance of the network as the end-to-end communication delay increases. We model the propagation of the malware as a deterministic epidemic. Using an optimal control framework, we select the optimal communication range that captures the above trade-off by minimizing a global cost function. Using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, we derive structural characteristics of the optimal communication range as a function of time for two different cost functions.

The paper characterizes the properties of discrete time minimax tracking control problem in the case of time varying references and disturbances. Hereunder, a multi step tracking control synthesis is suggested for linear time invariant (LTI) plants when the reference signal could be time dependent. Moreover, instead of directly rejecting the effect of the (time varying) disturbance signal, an intermediate estimation and centering step is proposed. This step eliminates the main part of the disturbance by its unbiased estimate. The solution combines the state and disturbance estimation with linear quadratic and optimal minimax tracking design. The resulted unified control solution is LQ optimal on infinite horizon with constant references and disturbances and sub-optimal on large horizons with time-varying references and disturbances. The paper clarify the effect of the time varying signals on the stability and performance criteria. The multi step procedure is illustrated via an ascending spiral trajectory tracking simulation of a quadrotor helicopter.

An extended fuzzy logic system (EFLS) based on interval fuzzy membership functions is proposed for covering more uncertainty in practical applications. With the degree of uncertainty in fuzzy membership functions, interval fuzzy membership functions are self-generated to include uncertainties which occur from understanding linguistic knowledge and fuzzy rules in fuzzy methods. A novel adaptive strategy is designed to self-tune the interval fuzzy membership functions and to deduce the crisp outputs with feedback structure. An inverse kinematics modelling study based on a two-joint robotic arm has demonstrated that proposed EFLS outperforms conventional fuzzy methods.

The frequency monitoring network (FNET) provides a low-cost, easily deployable method for wide-area monitoring. FNET has the capability to realize long term, high density and continuous monitoring of large interconnected power systems. In effect, there are potentials for ground-breaking research on wide-area monitoring and control. In this paper, low frequency oscillations in the Eastern Interconnection (EI) are analyzed based on generation trips detected by FNET in 2007. The oscillation data were selected in a way such that their locations are distributed throughout the EI system. In addition, some preliminary statistical analysis of the dynamic characteristics is presented. Through illustrating the control method of system stability, it is shown that the analysis of oscillation mode shape distribution is very important. As an example, some preliminary simulation results are provided for the control of system low-frequency oscillation due to transmission line faults or other changes in system topology.

In this paper we present robust statistical methods for segmentation and preprocessing of time-multiplexed videos. We will present hidden Markov and hidden semi-Markov model based real-time detectors and their usage for video segmentation and anomalous event detection. We demonstrate the high performance of our detectors with real-life outdoor videos from low-quality cameras.

A new approach to the cross-layer design of wireless networked control systems under limited computing and energy resources is presented. The idea is to provide a methodology that jointly takes the aspects of control e.g. control algorithms, Communication e.g. communication protocols, and Computation e.g. energy consumption into consideration. The design objective is the predictability and optimization of the control performance for a given control application. The control performance is a complex function of network parameters e.g. delay, packet loss, network throughput and control system parameters e.g. sampling period, control algorithm. control performance predictability and optimization can only be achieved by imposing requirements on the wireless network design. A cross-layer design methodology is shown to be very useful for this purpose. To illustrate the methodology, an inverted pendulum system with low-energy wireless network is used for the cross-layer design of control algorithms and communication protocols under computing and energy constraints.

We investigated 0.01-0.08 Hz low-frequency fluctuations of BOLD-fMRI signals in the face and object-responsive regions during the resting-state and during face or object viewing tasks. By comparing the effects of the face-responsive regions of interest with those of the object-responsive regions of interest, we observed a distributed cortical network of face perception during the resting-state among posterior fusiform gyrus, inferior occipital gyrus, and superior temporal sulcus. This network was also significantly activated during the face perception task. The face perception task also activated additional areas in the frontal and parietal regions. Our results suggest that the "core" but not the "extended" network for face processing is already in some form of activation during the resting-state. A possible function of the resting-state face perception network is perhaps to prepare the brain to process faces that individuals are highly likely to encounter in their environment. © 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

As a new mode of molecular imaging, bioluminescence tomography (BLT) will have *** *** on revealing the molecular and cellular information in vivo at the whole-body small animal level because of its high sensitive detection and facile operation. However, BLT is an ill-posed problem, it is necessary to incorporate a priori knowledge into the tomographic algorithm. In this paper, a novel Bayesian reconstruction algorithm for BLT is firstly proposed. In the algorithm, a priori permissible source region strategy is incorporated into the Bayesian network to reduce the ill-posedness of BLT. Then a generalized adaptive Gaussian Markov random field (GAGMRF) prior model for unknown source density estimation is developed to further reduce the ill-posedness of BLT on the basis of adaptive finite element analysis. Finally, the algorithm maximizes the log posterior probability with respect to a noise parameter and the unknown source density, the distribution of bioluminescent source can be reconstructed. In addition, the novel tomography algorithm based adaptive finite element makes the method more appropriate for complex phantom such as real mouse. In the numerical simulation, a heterogeneous phantom is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm with the Monte Carlo based synthetic data. The accurate localization of bioluminescent source and quantitative results show the effectiveness and potential of the tomographic algorithm for BLT. © 2009 SPIE.
