Quantitative analysis and detection of abnormalities for electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings during evoked activities are essential for clinical diagnosis on neurological disorders. However, the process of interpreting EEG is time consuming and requires experienced electroencephalographers (EEGers). In this study, a method of automatic EEG interpretation during hyperventilation was proposed. The purpose is to provide a quantitative interpretation of EEG which is able to conform to EEGers' visual inspection. The final integrated results of automatic interpretation were compared with EEGers' evaluation, and showed high consistence. © 2009 SICE.

In present study, a quantitative analytical approach has been taken to evaluate means to protect copper alloys (nickel silvers) against surface discoloration under the exposure of high temperatures. The aim is to propose future direction to further improve the surface protection against oxidation for nickel silver plates. Two approaches have been taken: one is to apply surface coating, another is to refine the subsurface grain structure in the bare substrate. Samples of nickel silver (C7521 and C7701) with and without surface coatings were exposed to 300C and 350C, respectively, for lOmin. Tested samples were then subjected to spectral colorimeter studies;phase identifications were carried out by XRD. In addition, the coating procedures were carefully studied in order to determine the optimal processing parameters for yielding the maximum protection. In conclusions, coating thickness does not affect the resistance against discoloration, pre-treatment of the substrate surfaces as well as the concentration and soak time of the anti-discoloration solutions can greatly influence the performances of the entire system against the occurrence of surface discoloration. ©2009 The Thermoelectrics Society of Japan.

Although top-down perceptual process plays an important role in face processing, its neural substrate is still puzzling because the top-down stream is extracted difficultly from the activation pattern associated with contamination caused by bottom-up face perception input. In the present study, a novel paradigm of instructing participants to detect faces from pure noise images is employed, which could efficiently eliminate the interference of bottom-up face perception in topdown face processing. Analyzing the map of functional connectivity with right FFA analyzed by conventional Pearson's correlation, a possible face processing pattern induced by top-down perception can be obtained. Apart from the brain areas of bilateral fusiform gyrus (FG), left inferior occipital gyrus (IOG) and left superior temporal sulcus (STS), which are consistent with a core system in the distributed cortical network for face perception, activation induced by top-down face processing is also found in these regions that include the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC), right oribitofrontal cortex (OFC), left precuneus, right parahippocampal cortex, left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), right frontal pole, bilateral premotor cortex, left inferior parietal cortex and bilateral thalamus. The results indicate that making-decision, attention, episodic memory retrieving and contextual associative processing network cooperate with general face processing regions to process face information under top-down perception. © 2009 SPIE.

Actuator systems are employed widely in aerospace, transportation and industrial processes to provide power to critical loads, such as aircraft control surfaces. They must operate reliably and accurately in order for the vehicle /process to complete successfully its designated mission. Incipient actuator failure conditions may severely endanger the operational integrity of the vehicle /process and compromise its mission. The ability to maintain a stable and credible operation, even in the presence of incipient failures, is of paramount importance to accomplish "must achieve" mission objectives. This paper introduces a novel methodology for the fault-tolerant design of critical subsystems, such as an Electro-Mechanical Actuator (EMA), that takes advantage of on-line, real-time estimates of the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) or Time-to-Failure (TTF) of a failing component and reconfigures the available control authority by trading off system performance with control activity. The primary goal is to complete critical mission objectives within a time window dictated by prognostic algorithms so that the fault mode is accommodated and an acceptable level of performance maintained for the duration of the mission. The proposed fault-tolerant control design is mathematically rigorous, generic and applicable to a variety of application domains. An EMA is used to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Bioluminescence tomography (BLT) is a novel in vivo technique in small animal studies, which can reveal the molecular and cellular information at the whole-body small animal level. At present, there is an increasing interest in multispectral bioluminescence tomography, since multispectral data acquisition could improve the BLT performance significantly. In view to the ill-posedness of BLT problem, we develop an optimal permissible source region strategy to constrain the possible solution of the source by utilizing spectrum character of bioluminescent source. Then a linear system to link the measured data with the unknown light source variables is established by utilizing the optimal permissible region strategy based on adaptive finite element analysis. Furthermore, singular value decomposition analysis is used for data dimensionality reduction and improving computational efficiency in multispectral case. The reconstructed speed and stability benefit from adaptive finite element, the permissible region strategy and singular value decomposition. In the numerical simulation, the heterogeneous phantom experiment has been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm with the Monte Carlo based synthetic data. The reconstruction results demonstrate the merits and potential of our methodology for localizing bioluminescent source. © 2009 SPIE.

This paper is concerned with the problem of H infin fuzzy filtering of nonlinear systems with intermittent measurements. The nonlinear plant is represented by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The measurements transmission from the plant to the filter is assumed to be imperfect, and a stochastic variable satisfying the Bernoulli random binary distribution is utilized to model the phenomenon of the missing measurements. Attention is focused on the design of an H infin filter such that the filter error system is stochastically stable and preserves a guaranteed H infin performance. A basis-dependent Lyapunov function approach is developed to design the H infin filter. By introducing some slack matrix variables, the coupling between the Lyapunov matrix and the system matrices is eliminated, which greatly facilitates the filter-design procedure. The developed theoretical results are in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, an illustrative example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A 6-degree-of-freedom rigid robot arm and its throwing motion generation is described in this paper. The trajectories for the joint variables are generated off-line as a cubic spline obtained using general constrained nonlinear optimization, taking into consideration limitations (position, speed, acceleration and jerk) of the joint actuators, and the current limit of the whole structure. The obtained trajectories are previously checked to avoid collisions using oriented bounding boxes and their separating axis theorem tests. The trajectory tracking of the individual joint is done using a discrete-time constrained optimal control technique.

EDGeS is an European funded Framework Program 7 project that aims to connect desktop and service grids together. While in a desktop grid, personal computers pull jobs when they are idle, in service grids there is a scheduler that pushes jobs to available resources. The work in EDGeS goes well beyond conceptual solutions to bridge these grids together: it reaches as far as actual implementation, standardization, deployment, application porting and training. One of the work packages of this project concerns monitoring the overall EDGeS infrastructure. Currently, this infrastructure includes two types of desktop grids, BOINC and XtremWeb, the EGEE service grid, and a couple of bridges to connect them. In this paper, we describe the monitoring effort in EDGeS: our technical approaches, the goals we achieved, and the plans for future work.

A new data structure dynamic watermarking scheme is proposed in this paper. Using Shamir threshold scheme and block encryption, the watermark is divided into several shares. Then these shares are embedded into the dynamic branch structure of program. Code obfuscation technique is applied during embedding. Our scheme provides watermarks with increased robustness, decreased visibility and higher cost performance ratio.

This paper presents a stereo based vision system which will be used to determine the stethoscope location on the human body in a cardiac auscultation tele-diagnostic system. The system is aimed at overcoming the problem of insufficient number of doctors comparing with the higher number of patients. The stereo vision system simulates human vision. The reconstruction of the point in three-dimensional space can be done by using the knowledge of camera calibration, image rectification, epipolar geometry, and disparity computation. © 2009 SICE.
