Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Multi-loss-aware channel pruning of deep networks

Channel pruning, which seeks to reduce the model size by removing redundant channels, is a popular solution for deep networks compression. Existing channel pruning methods usually conduct layer-wise channel selection by directly minimizing the reconstruction error of feature maps between the baseline model and the pruned one. However, they ignore the feature and semantic distributions within feature maps and real contribution of channels to the overall performance. In this paper, we propose a new channel pruning method by explicitly using both intermediate outputs of the baseline model and the classification loss of the pruned model to supervise layer-wise channel selection. Particularly, we introduce an additional loss to encode the differences in the feature and semantic distributions within feature maps between the baseline model and the pruned one. By considering the reconstruction error, the additional loss and the classification loss at the same time, our approach can significantly improve the performance of the pruned model. Cluster regularized quantization for deep networks compression

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved great success in a wide range of computer vision areas, but the applications to mobile devices is limited due to their high storage and computational cost. Much efforts have been devoted to compress DNNs. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective method for deep networks compression, named Cluster Regularized Quantization (CRQ), which can reduce the presentation precision of a full-precision model to ternary values without significant accuracy drop. In particular, the proposed method aims at reducing the quantization error by introducing a cluster regularization term, which is imposed on the full-precision weights to enable them naturally concentrate around the target values. Through explicitly regularizing the weights during the re-training stage, the full-precision model can achieve the smooth transition to the low-bit one. Comprehensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A competency in the industrial world depends on several aspects, that is cost, delivery, flexibility, and quality. The smart industrial system / Smart Manufacturing System (SMS) tries to improve those aspects using the latest technology that encourages the use of digital information widely and quickly in industrial systems. Development of SM in industry 4.0, pushing the change of industrial pyramids into Cyber-Physical System (CPS). CPS has begun to be applied widely in process industries nowadays, i.e., distillation process industry. In distillation process, boiler has the important role to separate 2 different components using the difference of its boiling point. In this paper, the alcohol distillation plant is used to purify 30% of alcohol solution. The modelling of boiler, simulation, and implementation of boiler control system are presented to get the desired temperature. The temperature reference is roughly 85 °C. Predictive Model controller (MPC) and Kalman Filter is proposed to control the temperature of boiler by adjusting the PWM of on-off time and to deal with the disturbance and sensor noise. The IAE, ISE, and ITAE is analyzed to obtain the error of control system and energy usage per operation is also calculated to find out the effect of MPC controller in energy optimization.

The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans.

The concept of "autonomous greenhouse" hints the automatic setting of control target, and giving orders on facilities to reach these targets (set point). Information and communication technologies are widely used, but how to integrate common sense or knowledge in decision-making is still challenging. Semi-autonomous greenhouse control is to set rules with joint advantages of experienced grower and powerful machinery, with the support of knowledge graph and semantic analysis. The contribution of each side is dependent on the intelligence level of computers, the availability of data, etc. In this work, the hybrid system between human and machinery is shown with the temperature control in greenhouse. The target is set mainly by expert knowledge, while the temperature controlled by vent opening is decided by an algorithm. Result shows that the target is better reached compared to that of the experience-based approach. This example shows the feasibility of human-machine hybrid intelligence system for greenhouse environment control. Although this approach is tested for temperature control, it can be extended to control multiple factors simultaneously (temperature, light intensity, humidity, etc.) by driving multiple facilities (heating, lightening, venting, etc.).

Tensor-based Incomplete Multi-view Clustering (TIMC) methods have received widespread attention due to the powerful data recovery capability of capturing cross-view high-order correlation. Although such methods have achieved remarkable progress, they still suffer from the following problems: (1) The extremely high computational complexity makes it hard for tensor-based methods to handle large-scale multi-view data. (2) Geometric structure constraints in the sample space often lead to high computational complexity and redundancy of structural information. (3) The commonly used Tensor Nuclear Norm (TNN) over-penalizes the primary rank components, leading to a sub-optimal representation tensor. Being aware of these, we propose Incomplete Multi-View Clustering with E fficient A nchor Te nsor R ecovery Framework (EATER). Specifically, it learns a group of anchors to construct a low-rank anchor tensor to recover the missing data with the high-order correlation among views and the geometric structure in the learned representation tensor is enhanced by an Anchor Laplacian Regularization (ALR). Moreover, instead of employing TNN, we adopt a tighter Non-convex Tensor Rank (NTR) to capture the multi-view high-order correlation effectively. An efficient iterative optimization algorithm is designed to solve the EATER, which is time-economical and enjoys favorable convergence. Extensive experimental results on various datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm as compared to state-of-the-art methods.

This paper implemented a current reconstruction system based on independent component analysis and magnetic field sensors. In this paper both the normal approximation and interfered approximation of magnetic flux density generated by current carrying conductors and sensed by four magnetic sensors are presented and discussed. The output voltage of the sensor array with and without interference was calculated based on the comprehensive independent component analysis algorithm. The relative reconstruction error based on the algorithm for array output voltage are within acceptable levels for protective devices proving the feasibility of the algorithm for source reconstruction. © 2019 IEEE.

In conducting research and teaching in fields related to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), it is particularly important to select a universal, safe, open research platform and tools for rapid prototyping. Ready-to-use, low-cost micro-class UAVs such as Bebop 2 are successfully used in that regard. This article presents how to use the potential of this flying robot with Robot Operating System (ROS). The most important software solutions for the developed experimental testbed FlyBebop are characterized here. Their capabilities in research and education are exemplified using three distinct cases: 1) research results on the method of optimal, in-flight, iterative self-tuning of UAV position controller parameters (based only on current measurements), 2) the use of the reinforcement learning method in the autonomous landing of a single drone on a moving vehicle, 3) planning the movement of UAVs for autonomous video recording along the planned path in the arrangement: "cameraman drone" and "lighting technician drones".

With the improvement of the intelligent level of the power grid, the operation safety of the power system has received extensive attention. The current accident analysis mostly relies on the experience of personnel, which is prone to omissions. Firstly, this article analyzes the safety risk factors of power grid accidents from four aspects: man factors, equipment factors, management factors, and environmental factors based on the accident causes theory. Secondly, the fault tree model is used to explore the mechanism of each failure factor and quantify the structural importance of each event. Finally, summarize the rules of accidents and make reasonable suggestions for scientifically and reasonably avoiding similar accidents and building a safe power grid.
