Different types of nonlinear controllers are designed and compared for a simple continuous bioreactor operating near optimal productivity. This operating point is located close to a fold bifurcation point. Nonlinear analysis of stability, controllability and zero dynamics is used to investigate open-loop system properties, to explore the possible control difficulties and to select the system output to be used in the control structure. A wide range of controllers are tested including pole placement and LQ controllers, feedback and input-output linearization controllers and a nonlinear controller based on direct passivation. The comparison is based on time-domain performance and on investigating the stability region, robustness and tuning possibilities of the controllers. controllers using partial state feedback of the substrate concentration and not directly depending on the reaction rate are recommended for the simple fermenter. Passivity based controllers have been found to be globally stable, not very sensitive to the uncertainties in the reaction rate and controller parameter but they require full nonlinear state feedback. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

This paper attempts to look at the fundamental problem of fault detection and isolation (FDI) in nonlinear systems. Using the idea of input reconstruction by means of dynamic inversion the authors first discuss the properties of input (or fault) observability in linear systems. The extension of the results to nonlinear systems as well as the mathematical conditions of the calculation of the inverse system, which provides the inverse in finite algorithmic steps, are given. The applicability of the inversion process to fault reconstruction in nonlinear systems is demonstrated. Copyright © 2002 IFAC.

Is combined sewer overflow spill frequency/volume a good indicator of receiving water quality impact?

It is often assumed that the frequency or volume of combined sewer overflow (CSO) spill is a good indicator of receiving water pollution impact. Whilst this assumption would appear to be true, recently there have been challenges to its veracity. To test this basic premise, an integrated model (SYNOPSIS) has been applied to the urban wastewater system of a semi-hypothetical catchment. By increasing the storage volume at a single downstream tank in the drainage system, the CSO spill frequency and volume was reduced. River water quality criteria, based on UPM standards, were calculated and related to spill frequency and volume over a series of long-term simulation runs. It was found that, up to certain storage volume levels, decreasing overflow frequency improved river DO and BOD and total ammonia. Beyond these volumes, however, there was no further improvement in DO/BOD and an increase in total ammonia. It is concluded that overflow frequency/volume can be used as a performance indicator for receiving water quality, provided its significant limitations are understood. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. This paper presents a fault detection and isolation (FDI) filter design to linearize longitudinal dynamics of a Boeing 747 series 100/200. The FDI filter design is based on a geometric approach which relies on the use of (C,A) invariant subspaces and provides conditions on separability and mutual detectability of the failures. In our case the fault detection filter is sensitive to elevator faults and pitch rate sensor faults. Typically, the FDI filter design approach is elaborated for an open loop model and applied in the closed loop. The robustness aspect of FDI is considered and the effect of closing the loop is shown in the nominal case as well as in the uncertain case. The FDI filter designed for aircraft control systems is analyzed for a nominal closed loop system in the presence of sensor noise.

This paper proposes the mixed lì synthesis for active suspension problems. With this method, a robust compensator that achieves nominal performance and meets robust stability specifications can be designed. Moreover, both the real parametric and the complex uncertainties are treated together, which usually yields a less conservative compensator than the traditional robust methods. In this paper, the design strategy is applied for active suspension, which involves real parametric uncertainties. The results are compared with the traditional LQG, complex lì and mixed lì methods. © 2001 EUCA.

Given an expansion of a dynamical system in terms of a generalized orthonormal (Hambo) basis, the problem of realizing a state-space model of minimal McMillan degree such that its first N expansion coefficients match the given ones is addressed and solved. For the solution use is made of the properties of the Hambo operator transform theory. The resulting realization algorithms can be applied in an exact and approximative sense and can also be applied to solve a related interpolation problem.

Single phase switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have a special place in the emerging high-volume, low-cost and low-performance applications in appliances and also in high-speed low-power motor drives in various industrial applications. Single phase SRMs have a number of drawbacks: low power density as they have only 50% utilization of windings, lack of self-starting feature unless otherwise built in to the machine, most of the time with permanent magnets or sometimes with distinct and special machine rotor configurations or additional mechanisms. Many of these approaches are expensive or make the manufacturing process more difficult. In order to overcome such disadvantages, a method involving interpoles and windings is proposed in this paper. The proposed structure also provides four-quadrant operational capability with an appropriate converter. In addition to the proposed single phase SRM topology, a new and novel converter topology requiring only a single switch and a single diode is proposed. This enables for the first time a compact and low-cost single phase SRM. The present configuration, in addition, enables rotor position sensorless operation of the proposed single SRM drive system. Experimental results of the proposed SRM drive system are included.

A 3-phase, 30 kVA, 4 pole, 1800 rpm superconducting generator is built and tested. The field winding of the rotor is a racetrack type with NbTi superconducting wire. The rotor is composed of two dampers and a liquid helium container in which the field poles reside. The space between the outermost damper and the container is vacuum insulated. To continuously transfer the liquid helium from the stationary dewar into the rotor and return the helium gas conversely, a special coupling is installed. The stationary coupling is connected to the rotor through a ferrofluid seal. The open circuit characteristic (OCC) and short circuit characteristic (SCC) are obtained. Also, the test results under the light load (up to 3.6 kW) are given. From the design stage, 2-D FE analysis coupled with the external circuit has been performed. The external circuit includes the end winding resistance and reactance as well as two dampers. When compared with the test data, the FE analysis results show a very good agreement. © 2000 IEEE.

We consider automata systems consisting of several pushdown automata working in parallel and communicating the contents of their stacks by request, using a communication strategy borrowed from grammar system theory. We investigate the computational power of these mechanisms. We prove that non-centralized parallel communicating pushdown automata systems with a bounded number of components, where each automaton is allowed to issue a query, are able to recognize all recursively enumerable languages. We also present homomorphical characterizations of the class of recursively enumerable languages for the centralized variants, where only a distinguished automaton issues queries. Moreover, we show that these centralized variants are at least as powerful as one-way multihead pushdown automata. Finally, some open problems and further directions of research are discussed. © 2000 World Scientific Publishing Company.
