A 3-phase, 30 kVA, 4 pole, 1800 rpm superconducting generator is built and tested. The field winding of the rotor is a racetrack type with NbTi superconducting wire. The rotor is composed of two dampers and a liquid helium container in which the field poles reside. The space between the outermost damper and the container is vacuum insulated. To continuously transfer the liquid helium from the stationary dewar into the rotor and return the helium gas conversely, a special coupling is installed. The stationary coupling is connected to the rotor through a ferrofluid seal. The open circuit characteristic (OCC) and short circuit characteristic (SCC) are obtained. Also, the test results under the light load (up to 3.6 kW) are given. From the design stage, 2-D FE analysis coupled with the external circuit has been performed. The external circuit includes the end winding resistance and reactance as well as two dampers. When compared with the test data, the FE analysis results show a very good agreement.

Decomposing dynamical systems in terms of orthogonal expansions enables the modelling/approximation of a system with a finite length expansion. By flexibly tuning the basis functions to underlying system characteristics, the rate of convergence of these expansions can be drastically increased, leading to highly accurate models (small bias) being represented by few parameters (small variance). Additionally algorithmic and numerical aspects are favourable. A recently developed general theory for basis construction will be presented, that is a generalization of the classical Laguerre theory. The basis functions are applied in problems of identification, approximation, realization, uncertainty modelling, and adaptive filtering, particularly exploiting the property that basis function models are linearly parametrized. Besides powerful algorithms, they also provide useful analysis tools for understanding the underlying identification/approximation algorithms.

In this paper a realization theory and associated algorithms are presented for the construction of minimal realizations on the basis of a sequence of expansion coefficients in a generalized orthonormal basis. Both the exact and the partial realization problem are addressed and solved, leading to extended versions of the classical Ho-Kalman *** the construction of the realization algorithms, fruitful use is made of a system analysis in the transform domain, being induced by the choice of basis functions. The resulting algorithms can also be applied in approximate realization and in system approximation.

A variant of a low cost, four-quadrant converter topology for permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBDC) motor drives is proposed in this paper. It has the advantage of variable DC input voltage to the machine through a buck-boost front-end power stage and hence low torque ripple at very low speeds, a desirable feature in high performance applications. It has a fixed commutation voltage, which is equal to the DC source voltage. Further, it is proved that the proposed power converter topology will enable the maximum extraction of power from PMBDC motor drives. In addition, the energization and commutation of machine phases can be achieved independently. Because of these features, the proposed topology provides high operational reliability for the motor drives.

A standard design procedure for a single sided and longitudinal flux based linear switched reluctance machine is developed in this paper. The proposed design procedure utilises the rotating switched reluctance machine design by converting the specifications of the linear machine in to the equivalent rotary machine. The machine design is carried out in the rotary domain which is then transformed back in to the linear domain. Such a procedure brings to bear the knowledge base and familiarity of the rotary machine designers to design a linear machine effectively. The paper contains the illustration of the proposed design procedure for a 4.8 m long prototype. An analysis procedure is developed with a magnetic model and results from it are verified with finite element analysis prior to construction of the prototype. Extensive experimental correlation in the form of inductance vs. position vs. current and propulsion force vs. position vs. current to validate the analysis and design procedure is given in the paper.

Repetitive, or multipass, processes are a class of 2D systems of both practical and algorithmic/theoretical interest whose dynamics cannot be analysed or controlled using standard (1D) systems theory. Recently it has been shown that the modelling of the boundary conditions, also known as the process initial conditions, is a crucial feature in the analysis and control of these processes. This paper presents some further results on the effects of so-called 'dynamic' process initial conditions on the controllability and stability properties of discrete linear repetitive processes. Previous work has shown that these dynamic process initial conditions alone can destroy the stability properties of these processes. Hence their effects must be 'adequately' accounted for the process modelling stage in order to ensure that subsequent analysis does not lead to incorrect results/conclusions. The main results developed in this paper can be summarised as follows. (i) Computationally efficient stability tests which can, in effect, be applied using standard, or 1D, linear systems tests. (ii) Characterisation of so-called pass controllability in the form of matrix rank based conditions. (iii) Conditions under which the dynamic process initial conditions can be selected to ensure stability and pass controllability. © 1999 IEEE.

An important aspect of linear controller design is to clarify whether the design reaches the performance limit. Based on an industrial project-a high precision three-axis gyro test table (servo system), a paradigm is presented to demonstrate that the performance limit of the disturbance attenuation design of the servo system can be reached in a systematic way by using the μ -synthesis. Moreover, this paper reveals that the performance limit is determined by the bandwidth. This finding will help the designer to judge whether any given performance specification is achievable.

Direct torque control (DTC) has drawn the attention of the motor drives designers because its implementation requires no position sensor. Crucial to the success of this scheme is the estimation of electromagnetic torque and stator flux linkages using the measured stator voltages and currents. The estimation is dependent only on one machine parameter, stator resistance. The variation of the stator resistance, which is usually in the range of 0.75-1.7 times its nominal value, deteriorates the performance of the drive by introducing errors in the estimated flux linkage's magnitude and its position and hence in the electromagnetic torque. Resistance change also skews the torque linearity thus making the motor drive a less than ideal torque amplifier. Parameter compensation using stator current phasor error has been proposed in literature. To obtain the stator current phasor error, the stator current reference is required which is not usually available in direct torque control schemes. An analytical derivation of the stator current phasor reference is derived systematically from the reference electromagnetic torque and flux linkages. The error between the stator current phasor reference and its measured value is a measure of the stator resistance variation from its set value. For the first time, it is demonstrated in this paper that the DTC motor drive system can become unstable when the set value of the stator resistance in the controller is higher than the stator resistance in the machine. Hence parameter adaptation is not only important for torque linearity but also for stability of the system is shown in this paper.
