In flying ad hoc networks (FANETs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) communicate with each other without any fixed infrastructure. Because of frequent topological changes, instability of wireless communication, three-dimensional movement of UAVs, and limited resources, especially energy, FANETs deal with many challenges, especially the instability of UAV swarms. One solution to address these problems is clustering because it maintains network performance and increases scalability. In this paper, a dynamic clustering scheme based on fire hawk optimizer (DCFH) is proposed for FANETs. In DCFH, each cluster head calculates the period of hello messages in its cluster based on its velocity. Then, a fire hawk optimizer (FHO)-based dynamic clustering operation is carried out to determine the role of each UAV (cluster head (CH) or cluster member (CM)) in the network. To calculate the fitness value of each fire hawk, a fitness function is suggested based on four elements, namely the balance of energy consumption, the number of isolated clusters, the distribution of CHs, and the neighbor degree. To improve cluster stability, each CH manages the movement of its CMs and adjusts it based on its movement in the network. In the last phase, DCFH defines a greedy routing process to determine the next-hop node based on a score, which consists of distance between CHs, energy, and buffer capacity. Finally, DCFH is simulated using the network simulator version 2 (NS2), and its performance is compared with three methods, including the mobility-based weighted cluster routing scheme (MWCRSF), the dynamic clustering mechanism (DCM), and the Grey wolf optimization (GWO)-based clustering protocol. The simulation results show that DCFH well manages the number of clusters in the network. Organizational and technical approaches have proven successful in increasing the performance and preventing risks at socio-technical systems at all scales. Nevertheless, damaging events are often unavoidable due to a wide and dynamic threat landscape and enabled by the increasing complexity of modern systems. For overall performance and risk control at the system level, resilience can be a versatile option, in particular for reducing resources needed for system development, maintenance, reuse, or disposal. This paper presents a framework for a resilience assessment and management process that builds on existing risk management practice before, during, and after potential and real events. It leverages tabular and matrix correlation methods similar as standardized in the field of risk analysis to fulfill the step-wise resilience assessment and management for critical functions of complex systems. We present data needs for the method implementation and output generation, in particular regarding the assessment of threats and the effects of counter measures. Also included is a discussion of how the results contribute to the advancement of functional risk control and resilience enhancement at system level as well as related practical implications for its efficient implementation. The approach is applied in the domains telecommunication, gas networks, and indoor localization systems. Results and implications are further discussed. © 2021, The Author(s).

The use of digital twins in the development and management of stone-cutting devices presents real challenges in the field of industrial stone manufacturing. Digital twins help manufacturers achieve increased precision, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, ultimately transforming the landscape of stone manufacturing operations. Such digital twins enable real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and virtual simulations. This paper explores two options for connecting a physical stone-cutting machine in a company to its digital twin. The first option involves using Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices and a Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) broker to enable real-time data exchange. This approach provides agile and efficient communication between the physical machine and its digital twin. The second option employs conventional automation devices and a VPN connection to ensure data security during transmission. The two options were evaluated by considering criteria such as communication speed, security, scalability, ease of implementation, cost, complexity, and technical requirements. The results of the comparative analysis provide valuable insights for the implementation of the digital twin of the stone-cutting machine, allowing the selection of the most suitable option based on these considerations.

This research addresses the challenges of multi-attribute group decision-making in a hesitant fuzzy environment, where randomness and uncertainty introduce biases into practical making choices. A probability-based double uncertain fuzzy (PDHF) algorithm is proposed to overcome these challenges. The algorithm constructs probability-based double hesitant fuzzy information matrices for each decision expert. The maximum deviation and entropy methods determine objective weights for decision experts and attribute indicators. Combining an improved scoring function and deviation function generates a comprehensive decision evaluation information matrix for decision experts. Subsequently, a decision algorithm that integrates probability-based double hesitant fuzzy sets with the preference ranking organization method (PROM) is employed to obtain the final decision result. As part of a case study, the algorithm is used to evaluate emergency action plans for aviation disaster accidents. Comparing the results with those from the TOPSIS, VIKOR, and PDHFS decision-making algorithms shows that the suggested PDHF algorithm works well and can be trusted for the multi-attribute group decision-making problems in hesitant fuzzy environments. © 2023 The Author(s)

The study conducted aims to form a conceptual model to calculate the pupils’ acceptance of social media in education and its factors. Although the amount of research done on the acceptance of social media applications has amplified, the factors affecting its acceptance for learning are not recognized. The study is carried out by extending the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) using perceived playfulness and social influence. Alongside this, the collected data is evaluated through Machine Learning (ML) approaches and the partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). A total of 369 students enrolled at highly regarded universities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) filled out questionnaire surveys, then analyzed, and results are stated. This research suggests that students’ intention to adopt social media networks in learning is due to significant factors such as perceived playfulness, social influence, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Portfolio optimization with idiosyncratic and systemic risks for financial networks

In this study, we propose a new multi-objective portfolio optimization with idiosyncratic and systemic risks for financial networks. The two risks are measured by the idiosyncratic variance and the network clustering coefficient derived from the asset correlation networks, respectively. We construct three types of financial networks in which nodes indicate assets and edges are based on three correlation measures. Starting from the multi-objective model, we formulate and solve the asset allocation problem. We find that the optimal portfolios obtained through the multi-objective with networked approach have a significant over-performance in terms of return measures in an out-of-sample framework. This is further supported by the less drawdown during the periods of the stock market fluctuating downward. According to analyzing different datasets, we also show that improvements made to portfolio strategies are robust. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Succinct Link Transformation-based Overlapping Community Detection Framework for Social Network Analysis

Detecting communities in real-world networks is a challenging and important problem. Numerous algorithms have been proposed in recent years, and significant progress has been made. Overlapping community detection, where individual nodes may belong to multiple communities, has gained attention for its applicability to real-world scenarios. However, accurately analyzing complex networks with high levels of overlap remains difficult. This study presents a succinct link transformation-based framework for overlapping community detection that addresses the challenges of dense and large-scale networks while supporting scalability. The framework transforms the original network into a succinct line graph, or edge-centric graph, by leveraging both node-node and edge-edge (referred to as "link") relationships. Within this transformed graph, edges and links are prioritized using minwise hashing, resulting in an efficient link transformation method. The proposed framework was evaluated against mainstream overlapping community detection algorithms. Experimental results showed superior performance on dense overlapping graphs, with up to 53% improvement in computational efficiency and up to 67% increase in detection accuracy compared to existing methods, demonstrating both scalability and extensibility. This framework enables high-quality overlapping community detection on dense and large-scale real-world networks using various existing algorithms. © 2013 IEEE.

Vehicle theft is a growing menace which poses serious problems in the society. The theft of vehicles affects vehicle owners, insurance companies, security companies as well as the society at large. Tracking devices offer a cost effective and reliable solution to this problem. This paper, therefore presents the development of a GPS-GSM guided system for vehicle tracking. The developed system comprises of an integration of both hardware and software such as a microcontroller (Arduino), GPS module, GSM module, and a vibration sensor. The hardware development consists of wiring between the GPS module, GSM module, Arduino, and vibration sensor. The software development uses Arduino source code, GSM module AT commands, and the GPS protocol command. The system is controlled by the user with the use of text messages. The system uses the correlation between the text messages and programmed keywords to send the vehicle coordinates directly to the vehicle owner or to local authorities. Performance tests show that the system sends coordinates to the owner whether or not the vehicle is in motion. The system is reliable and cost effective for monitoring vehicles in the eventuality of car, motorbike or bicycle theft. © 2020 IEEE.

Internet-of-things (IoT) is an enabling technology in the fourth generation industrial revolution. An unified performance metric named age of information (AoI) is introduced to quantify the freshness of data and its applications. Thus, this paper study the combination of AoI and full-duplex enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (FD-UAV) as a promising solution to improve latency and spectrum efficiency of a wireless powered sensor network. A sensor node (SN), located in a transport infrastructure, harvests energy from radio frequency signals transmitted by the FD-UAV. This uses to transmit real time sensor observations to the data sink via FD-UAV. The SN generates an update after replenished the battery and transmits by using the harvested energy. A closed-form expression for average AoI (AAoI) is derived as a function of time allocated for energy harvesting (EH). The optimal time allocation for EH that maximizes the freshness of data update is identified. Deep learning algorithms such as Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) is used to predict the AAoI. Simulation results demonstrate the usefulness performance bounds in-terms of freshness of data updates. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study proposes a logical Petri net model to leverage the modeling advantages of Petri nets in handling batch processing and uncertainty in value passing and to integrate relevant game elements from multi-agent game processes for modeling multi-agent decision problems and resolving optimization issues in dynamic multi-agent game decision-making. Firstly, the attributes of each token are defined as rational agents, and utility function values and state probability transition functions are assigned to them. Secondly, decision transitions are introduced, and the triggering of the optimal decision transition is determined based on a comparison of token utility function values, along with an associated algorithm. Finally, a dynamic game emergency business decision-making process for sudden events is modeled and analyzed using the logic game decision Petri net. Based on reachable markings, reachable graphs are constructed to analyze the dynamic game process. Algorithms are described for the generation of reachable graphs, and the paper explores how the logic game decision model for sudden events can address dynamic game decision problems, generate optimal emergency plans, and analyze resource conflicts during emergency processes. The effectiveness and superiority of the model in analyzing the emergency business decision-making process for sudden events are validated. © 2023 The Author(s)
