Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics. Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic.

In this paper, capacity analysis for two multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, spatial multiplexing (SMX) and spatial modulation (SM), over 3D statistical outdoor mmWave channel model is presented and compared. The theoretical capacity for each systems are derived and studied. The SM capacity is shown to be channel independent and requires proper design of the used constellation symbols for each channel statistics. Although, it is revealed that the theoretical capacity of SM is higher than that of SMX. Monte Carlo simulation results with ordinary constellation symbols, such as QAM, ascertained that SMX offers better mutual information performance than SM for the same MIMO setup. Hence, proper design of the signal constellations for SM is needed. In addition, the energy efficiency (EE) of both MIMO systems, SM and SMX is discussed in this paper. Obtained results show that SM can offer up to 36% and 74% enhancement in the EE compared to SMX. © VDE VERLAG GMBH · Berlin · Offenbach.

Green Internet of things （loT） has been heralded as the ＂next big thing＂ waiting to be realized in energy-efficient ubiquitous computing. Green IoT revolves around increased machine-to-machine communications and encompasses energy-efficient wireless embedded sensors and actuators that assist in monitoring and controlling home appliances. Energy efficiency in home applications can be achieved by better monitoring of the specific energy consumption by the appliances. There are many wireless standards that can be adopted for the design of such embedded devices in loT. These communication technologies cater to different requirements and are classified as the short-range and long-range ones. To select the best communication method, this paper surveys various loT communication technologies and discusses the advantages and disadvantages to develop an energy monitoring system. An IoT device based on the Wi-Fi technology system is developed and tested for usage in the home energy monitoring environment. The performance of this system is then evaluated by the measurement of power consumption metrics. In the efficient deep-sleep mode, the system saves up to 0.3 W per cycle with an average power dissipation of less than 0.1 W/s.

In this paper, we proposed the high transparent digital television (DTV) antenna. The used transparent material is based on nano-structured thin film coating on the glass substrate for achieving the transparency up to 80%. The substrate dimension size of the proposed design is 200 × 150 mm2. The proposed antenna has radiation efficiency of 66.52% and having the bandwidth of 0.46-0.66 GHz. The proposed antenna is very much compatible to digital television signal receiving applications. © 2017 IEEE.

In this study, the AlN thin films were deposited on LiTaO_3 substrates by reactive radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The influence of sputtering power and sputtering pressure on the microstructures of AlN films were investigated and discussed. The analysis of the crystalline structures and morphologies of the thin films was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopic (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM). The experimental results showed that the AlN films with strongly c-axis orientated, low surface roughness and uniform surface morphologies were obtained at sputtering power of 270 W, sputtering pressure of 5 mtorr, substrate temperature of 300℃ and nitrogen fraction of 60%.

Optical Carrier Suppression has been proven as an efficient way of generating high frequency optical carrier for Radio over Fiber (RoF) systems. However, previous studies show that OCS with the combination of RF and optical components can only transmit a single service in RoF system. This paper shows that two different services can be transmitted using a single wavelength through RoF system with the use of Polarization Multiplexing (PolMux) method. The combination of these two techniques enables multiservice RoF such as LTE and WiFi services to be transmitted simultaneously to the customers.

The background microscopic image shows leptospira interrogans bacteria, the source of Leptospirosis, a deadly disease but with common early flu-like symptoms and likely leads to under-diagnosed. Highly sensitive leptospira DNA sensor is developed using tapered optical fiber as shown by the schematic image. Laser transmits in the optical fiber interacts with the functionalized amine and aldehyde coatings (bottom images) to produce wavelength shifts upon DNA exposure around the tapered region.
