Over the last decades, various kinds of Internet enabled devices have been developed. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) has provided standard guidelines to improve the interoperability of DLNA-capable devices and to enhance the usability of digital contents through DLNA Certified devices. However, for several reasons, the transmission for media sharing between DLNA devices is still not seamless and users still experience low quality services, even between DLNA certified devices. In this paper, we address this problem from the respective of QoE (Quality of Experience) and present a system designed to keep user's service quality with reduced network resource consumption in terms of network bandwidth usage. As the key component in the system we propose Media Server that keeps media files encoded different qualities and delivers media files to multiple DLNA client devices, considering available bandwidth in a network. At each device request, the server chooses the media file that is the most appropriate for the devices with respect to the network status at the time of the request. Media files are classified into 5 different levels where each level has different bit rate. Before transmission, Media Server checks for the network status and selects the best video level that can be delivered to the client device with the best quality. We present the usefulness of our approach with results obtained from experimental studies to deliver video services seamlessly to meet users' quality requirements. Our results show that the proposed approach can also make better utilization of the limited home-network resources.

In this paper a new space-time cooperative diversity relaying strategy using partner selection technique is proposed. More than one relaying terminal are included in one cooperative group to share their state information, such as frame error rate and channel state information. The best terminals are selected to send binary information using space-time diversity relay system. In the implementation for the proposed scheme the TDMA cooperative protocol is also presented. The resulting receive signal to transmit signal ratio(E r /E s ) and computer simulation demonstrate that the proposed strategy outperforms the conventional cooperative system.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

The use of asynchronous duty cycling at the MAC layer affords substantial energy savings in wireless networks. This technique is widely used in sensor networks and other types of wireless networks such as ad hoc networks. With asynchronous duty cycling, each node switches alternately between sleeping and active states; each node waking up asynchronously reduces network contention and wireless collisions caused by nodes waking up simultaneously, but also can have undesirable effects on higher layer protocols. In this paper, we study the problem of on-demand route discovery in asynchronous duty-cycling wireless networks and present four optimizations for such route discovery: Delayed Selection, Duty-Cycled Selection, Reply Updating, and Adaptive Backoff. Through detailed ns-2 simulations, we show that, without these optimizations, the routes discovered in asynchronous duty-cycling networks can be over 50% longer than the theoretical shortest routes and can have an ETX 90% larger than the ETX of the optimal routes. With only simple changes made at the MAC or network layers, our optimizations enabled nodes to substantially improve discovered routes, finding routes that were only 0.2% longer than the theoretical shortest routes or routes with an ETX only 9% larger than the ETX of the theoretical optimal-ETX routes, while also reducing route discovery latency and node energy consumption.

The distribution of wavelet modulus maxima across wavelet scales can be used to characterize edges in an image. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm that performs image enhancement by mapping the distribution of the wavelet modulus maxima of the blurred image to that of a generic sharp image. Experimental results confirm that the proposed algorithm is able to perform image enhancement without introducing unpleasant visual artifacts.

As an important part of book covers, characters contain rich semantic information. By extracting accurate information from complex color images, and combining it with content-based image retrieval technology, it is possible to further improve the accuracy of book retrieval. According to the characteristics of text information in Chinese book covers, this paper proposes connected components methods to locate the text regions. At first, the grayscale image is decomposed to a series of binary images and merged to connect components in each image, according to the structures of Chinese characters, generating candidate text regions. Additionally, text verification is used to rule out non-text regions. The result regions are regarded as the prominent regions of book cover, further this paper use Hu moment invariant to extract features for image matching. Experiments show the results of this method are fairly good, proving the importance of text information to book retrieval. © Copyright 2012, Editorial Department of Journal of Software.

In this paper, we report on a mobile broadband wireless access (MBWA) system field trial with Fast Low-latency Access with Seamless Handoff Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (FLASH-OFDM). This paper describes coverage estimates of an uplink 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal under the condition of constant terminal output power when the signal bandwidth is up to 20 MHz. The estimates are based on the field trial results of 16 QAM and 1.28 MHz bandwidth. The estimation results show that wider signal bandwidth yields narrower coverage area. When the signal bandwidths are 10 MHz and 20 MHz, the coverage areas of 64 QAM are significantly shrunk to only 8% and 4% of the field trial area, respectively. One solution to the above coverage issue is a heterogeneous wireless network such as a combination of MBWA and wireless local area network (WLAN). © 2011 National Institute of Inform.

This article focuses on the design of miniaturized broadband planar feeding systems for circularly polarized antennas. Four probe antenna geometries have been selected to achieve high bandwidth and axial ratio beamwidth (AR < 3 dB). The required feeding circuits include one input and four outputs having equal magnitude and 90° phase difference. The performance of the planar circuits as well as the overall antenna systems is presented. Bandwidths in the range of 30% to 50% are demonstrated.

Document images captured by a mobile phone camera often have perspective distortions. In this paper, fast and robust vanishing point detection methods for such perspective documents are presented. Most of previous methods are either slow or unstable. Based on robust detection of text baselines and character tilt orientations, our proposed technology is fast and robust with the following features: (1) quick detection of vanishing point candidates by clustering and voting on the Gaussian sphere space, and (2) precise and efficient detection of the final vanishing points using a hybrid approach, which combines the results from clustering and projection analysis. The rectified image acceptance rate for Mobile Cam-based documents, signboards and posters is more than 98% with an average speed of about 100ms.

Future vehicular communications systems are expected to utilize the vacant channels (white spaces) of the spectrum, otherwise allocated for specific designated use. One such candidate of white space comes from the TV broadcast band. In this demonstration, we will first present animated results of a TV spectrum measurement campaign along the entire portion of Interstate I-90 located in the US state of Massachusetts. Next, we will demonstrate a cyber-physical proof-of-concept lab implementation of our previously developed control and data channel assignment schemes for vehicle-to-vehicle communications over (TV) white space. Finally we will show a video of actual vehicle to vehicle communications field tests conducted in Japan using TV white space.
