All-optical gain-control Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) based on ring cavity technique using a pair of circulators is investigated experimentally. A pair of 1465 nm laser diodes are used as the pump source to the RFA which provides a gain peak at around 1565 nm. The analyses of gain and noise figure are carried out using lasing wavelengths of 1550 and 1565 nm. Gain and noise figure variations are 0.4 and 0.5 dB respectively. We observed strong influence of pump-signal relative intensity noise transfer that results in noise figure penalty.

The structural and magnetic properties of the polycrystalline La/sub 1-x/Sr/sub x/CoO/sub 3/ sample synthesized by solid-state reaction were investigated. X-ray diffraction was used to study the structural properties of the sample. The ferromagnetic transition temperature (T/sub C/) and temperature dependence magnetization were determined using ac susceptibility measurement and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer, respectively. High resolution neutron diffraction experiment was also carried out for the sample at different temperatures.

In this paper, we propose a new structure of double decision-directed order adaptive weighted moving average (DD-OAWMA) channel estimator that can compensate for the received power control bits without delay in WCDMA reverse link. The proposed channel estimator consists of a combination of predictor and decision-directed FIR filter, where the predictor is made of an IIR filter. In addition, we propose a new velocity estimation algorithm to overcome the IIR filter divergence problem due to the mobile station velocity. The proposed algorithms cannot only be used for WCDMA reverse link but also is applicable for cdma2000 system without major modifications. These algorithms are particularly useful for high speed fading channel, which has been verified through extensive computer simulation.

Novel microstrip-type low-pass filters are proposed to effectively suppress spurious response in stop-band. The proposed low-pass filter employs an open stub microstrip inserted by thin or thick film resistors in the place of a conventional open stub microstrip. The proposed low-pass filters was shown to suppress the spurious response by more than 20/spl sim/40 dB compared with conventional microstrip low-pass filters.

We evaluate the performance of a W-CDMA reverse link receiver system with closed loop fast transmit power control (TPC). For fast power control, signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) must be measured precisely. We propose a new SIR measurement algorithm having a simple structure. The proposed algorithm uses unused orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code for interference power evaluation. The proposed SIR measurement algorithm is compared to the conventional SIR measurement algorithm (see Higuchi, K. et al., IEEE. J. Sel. Areas Commun., vol.18, no,8, p.1526-35, 2000; Seo, S. et al., IEICE Trans. Commun., vol.E81-B, no.7, p.1508-16, 1998; Andoh, H. et al., IEICE Trans. Commun., vol.E81-B, no.7, p.1517-26, 1998) under closed loop fast TPC. We adopted a weighted multi-slot averaging (WMSA) channel estimation filter with K=2 for mobile radio channel estimation and considered one slot TPC delay. Extensive computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm using unused OVSF code reduces the required E/sub b//I/sub 0/ at the BER of 10/sup -3/ up to 0.9 dB and has an improved TPC error performance compared to the conventional algorithm.

In this paper, we consider processors which provide an idle instruction to the user for powering down processor units which are not required during portions of program execution. We describe algorithms which can be implemented in an energy-aware compiler to make efficient use of such an instruction. These algorithms are based on program static analysis and a combinatorial optimization formulation of the problem. We assume as input an assembly language program of the processor in question. The problem is to insert the idle instruction at different places in the assembly language program such that energy saving is maximized and the execution time of the resulting program is not increased beyond a user-specified value. In this paper we study the following problem: how to divide a cake among the children attending a birthday party such that all the children get the same amount of cake and the same amount of icing. This leads us to the study of the following. A perfect 1/k-partitioning of a convex set S' is a partitioning of S into k convex pieces such that each piece has the same area and of the perimeter of S. We show that for any k, any convex set admits a perfect 1/k-partitioning. Perfect partitionings with additional constraints are also studied. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000

A new coarse frequency offset estimation algorithm is proposed which performs robust operation in the presence of a symbol timing offset in an allowed range. The effect of a symbol timing offset on estimating a coarse frequency offset is analyzed and the coherence phase bandwidth according to the allowed symbol timing offset is introduced. In addition, a new technique for performing the coarse frequency estimation using the coherence phase bandwidth is described. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm estimates a coarse frequency offset well under both AWGN and multipath channels even in the presence of the symbol timing offset within an allowed range.

This paper presents a 12-sector antenna using a proximity coupled taper slot antenna (PCTSA). By optimizing a parameter of PCTSA, we demonstrated the 12-sector antenna experimentally. By using a cylindrical reflector, the side lobe level caused by the mutual coupling of the adjacent elements is suppressed. This sector beam antenna has a front gain of 7 dBi and its half-power beamwidth is about 30/spl deg/ in the H plane. © 1999 IEEE.

Typically, two's complement is chosen to represent numbers since arithmetic operations of addition and subtraction are easy to perform. However, due to sign extension, an arithmetic operation for small dynamic data ranges may require switching power in the entire word length. Herein, we develop a two's complement adder with the dynamic-range determination and sign-extension units to reduce power consumption. According to the actual data range by minimizing sign-extension bits, only partial functional blocks of an adder are active to generate a final result of which sign bit is then extended to match the original word length. Experimental results demonstrate that our 32-bit carry-lookahead adder has 22.9% power reduction than the conventional one while dynamic ranges of input data are the Gaussian distribution with a mean of 16 bits and a standard deviation of 8 bits.
