This paper presents a 12-sector antenna using a proximity coupled taper slot antenna (PCTSA). By optimizing a parameter of PCTSA, we demonstrated the 12-sector antenna experimentally. By using a cylindrical reflector, the side lobe level caused by the mutual coupling of the adjacent elements is suppressed. This sector beam antenna has a front gain of 7 dBi and its half-power beamwidth is about 30/spl deg/ in the H plane.

Two major improvements, controlled fan-in and automated initial-circuit production, were made over the random generator of benchmark circuits presented at DAC'94. This is an important progress towards our goal of random benchmarking: more general and secure testing, increasing the naturality of random circuits by controlling their attributes, and obtaining test results by which the difference of performances under evaluation can be made clear.

A 3 V-50 MHz analog CMOS current-mode continuous-time active filter with a negative resistance load (NRL) is proposed. In order to design a current-mode current integrator, a modified basic current mirror with a NRL to increase the output resistance is employed. The inherent circuit structure of the designed NRL current integrator, which minimizes the internal circuit nodes and enhances the gain bandwidth product, is capable of making the filter operate at the high Frequency. The third order Butterworth low pass filter utilizing the designed NRL current integrator is synthesized and simulated with a 1.5 mu m CMOS n-well process. Simulation result shows the cutoff frequency of 50 MHz and power consumption of 2.4 mW/pole with a 3 V power supply.

We propose a scheme to estimate exact minimum parallel execution time of the single loop with loop-carried dependences in medium and fine grain parallel execution. The minimum parallel execution time of a loop is given by the critical path length of the dependence graph which represents the code obtained from the fully unrolled loop. However, unrolling loops with a large number of iterations requires too much computation time and large storage space to be practical. The scheme proposed provides the minimum parallel execution time without unrolling the loop at all by reducing the problem into an integer linear programming problem and employing the simplex method and a branch-and-bound algorithm to solve it. We also show an experimental implementation of the proposed scheme with Livermore Benchmark Kernels to demonstrate that the computational complexity of our scheme is independent of the number of iterations of the given loop. © 1996 IEEE.

Dr. Pond is currently a scientist at Hughes Space and Communications Company having joined in 1980. He has worked in the fields of communication system design mobile communication network and spacecraft payload design. He is currently working on the development of satellite-based ATM transport and switching architectures for BISDN and Defense Information System Network amlications. Dr. Pond is a member of IEEE. Victor O. K. Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his SB SM and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge Massachusetts in 1977 1979 and 1981 respectively. Since February 1981 he has been with the University of Southern California (USC) LOS Angeles California where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. He has published 150 technical papers and has lectured and consulted extensively around the world. His research interests include high-speed communication networks personal communication networks intelligent networks distributed databases queueing theory graph theory and applied probability. Dr. Li is very active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) having been a member of the Computer Communications Technical Committee since 1983 and having served as Chairman from 1987–1989. In this, the second part of a two-part paper, the required time for establishing a mobile packet radio network using the virtual circuit and time division multiple access protocol developed in Part 1 is analysed. Tools are developed to determine the virtual circuit and network set-up times in terms of the channel bandwidth allocated to establish and maintain the network. The tools are then extended to include the effects of user mobility. Then these results are combined with the network capacity results of Part 1 to analyse the trade-off between the data rate and set-up time of the network. Next a hierarchical architecture is proposed and the network data rate versus set-up time trade-off of this architecture is analysed using these tools. This architecture is shown to both provide a higher data rate and establish faster than flat networks of the same number of nodes.

A METHOD FOR PREDICTING CHAOTIC TIME-SERIES WITH OUTLIERS

In recent years, there have been intensive studies on the short-term, prediction method for time-series data with chaotic properties. The prediction for the chaotic time-series data is executed, for example, as follows. Based on the single-variable time-series data, the trajectory of the attractor is reconstructed in the multidimensional space and the change of the trajectory is predicted by a polynomial approximation. However, when there exists a noise such as the outlier in the time-series, the prediction error is increased drastically. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a prediction method which is robust against the outlier. More precisely, the following three elaborations are added to the conventional method: (1) the coefficients of the polynomial are calculated by Biweight's estimation method;(2) the order of the polynomial is determined automatically examining the residual error;and (3) the data with a large prediction error are replaced by the predicted value and the next prediction is applied. An evaluation experiment is executed for the data where the pseudorandom variable with the Cauchy distribution is superposed on the chaotic time-series data generated by the Henon map and the Lorenz model. It is verified as a result that the proposed method can well suppress the increase of the prediction error due to the outliers, improving greatly the accuracy of the prediction compared to the conventional method.

He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

In a recent paper Haug and Ucci (see IEEE International Conf. on communications, p.306, 1992) investigated the case in which the desired signal in Rayleigh faded and a cochannel interferer is Rician faded. It was assumed in that study that the coverage area is interference-limited and not noise-limited. In the present report it is further required that a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) sufficient to give satisfactory radio reception be present at the receiver. An analytic expression for outage probability under these conditions is determined. © 1992 IEEE.
