Mobile Health Application for Proactive Self-management: A Case Study of Hypertensive Diabetic Patients in Thailand

Diabetes and hypertension are prevalent chronic diseases globally. This study was conducted in Thailand and aimed to investigate the impact of a mobile application tailored for promoting self-management of hypertensive diabetic patients. The proposed mobile application provides users with the ability to monitor personal and clinical data and receive personal health recommendations. The recommendations are given according to the health condition trends and personal engagement level of the patient. Health condition detection was used to identify the trends, which can be positive, negative, or neutral progression trends. Personalized recommendations are provided to each patient by investigating personal engagement levels using associate rules. The proposed mobile application was evaluated in terms of effectiveness and user satisfaction for both healthcare professionals and patients in Thailand. The proposed mobile application was considered to be effective at a “moderately high” level (78%) according to 10 healthcare professionals and received an average score of 4.18 out of 5 (“very satisfied”) from 33 patients. © 2025 River Publishers.

This study proposes a system to identify poses based on the 4-stage balance test for fall risk assessment using custom-developed, pressure-sensitive footwear equipped with force-sensitive resistors (FSRs) and machine learning (ML) models. The system captures and analyzes pressure distribution data during balance tests to predict types of poses. Data was collected from 30 healthy participants aged 18-25 years performing standard balance tests. Preprocessing steps included data cleaning, normalization, and feature extraction. Three ML models - Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boosting (GB) - were evaluated. The LSTM model achieved the highest performance in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-scores, demonstrating its capability in handling sequential data. The system shows promise as a cost-effective tool for pose identification to aid fall risk assessment, though further research is needed to expand the dataset diversity and refine the algorithms. This study provides a foundation for developing scalable tools to assess and mitigate fall risks, particularly among vulnerable populations. © 2025 IEEE.

Understanding learner variability in learning styles is critical for optimizing personalized learning benefits. Learning style, a concept within educational psychology, has been explored through various theoretical frameworks, including VAK (Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic) learning modalities. This study utilized a multidisciplinary approach to develop and test a web-based computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) system, aiming to overcome the limitations of conventional questionnaire-based assessments, such as potential disinterest and unreliable outcomes, in determining VAK learning styles. The study approach involved the recruitment of computer science students from Mae Fah Luang University. It also included developing a web-based CAT system using Django. Furthermore, an item bank based on Revised Bloom's Taxonomy was created. Additionally, the validity of the instruments used was evaluated using the Rasch model. We conducted an analysis of User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) data to evaluate the overall user experience of both the conventional and CAT tests, and the statistics indicate that the web-based CAT offers a more user-friendly experience. The study also utilized the concordance rate to gauge the similarity of data responses among the conventional, CAT, and self-assessment tests concerning VAK learning styles. The findings indicate that the proposed method exhibits an 87% similarity with self-assessment and shows significant potential. ©2024 IEEE.

This paper focuses on implementing and evaluating a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system that provides personalized fitness and dietary guidance by combining real-time data from wearable devices with curated knowledge sources. While the current implementation depends on a carefully selected set of PDF files as a source of knowledge base, extracting relevant information in order to frame the answer to a question by the user, the planned integration of a curated, well-structured database aims to enhance the system's reliability and scope. The paper presents an overview of RAG-based system-related literature, describes the process of implementing the RAG component, and discusses the effectiveness in generating relevant and accurate answers. This implementation demonstrates the capability of RAG technology to develop interactive and effective solutions for dietary and fitness applications and sets a foundation for further system improvements. © 2025 IEEE.

In the dynamic landscape of technology, the intersection of edge computing with health care holds immense promise, especially in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations such as the elderly. This research focuses on developing a motion detection system using advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and edge computing to integrate with real-time database systems. This system is developed not only to monitor activities but also to analyze activity patterns in the elderly. These patterns have the potential to identify diseases early, preventing unforeseen consequences. Our evaluation analyzes the accuracy of detecting standing and sleeping positions. It demonstrates high precision in identifying standing postures but reveals challenges in recognizing sleeping postures, mainly due to tracking and detection issues in the YOLOv8 model. © 2024 IEEE.

Embedded systems are increasingly being employed for a wide range of applications. Small and large enterprises can benefit from sensor networks and Internet of Things technologies. Farmers, particularly the next generation of farmers, are tremendously interested in the smart farm system. This is due to Thailand's favorable geography, and young farmers are becoming more technologically literate. However, smart farm systems on the market are still too expensive and don't meet small farms' needs. Consequently, the study proposed a low-cost irrigation and fertilizer system for high-quality melon farms in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The system can properly carry out irrigation and fertilization operations on the melon farm, which require specific attention at various stages of production. As a result, the technique reduces human work while simultaneously supplying adequate water and nutrients to the entire plant. Moreover, farmers with Internet access can manually monitor or supervise the operation at any time, from any location, and on any device. The developed system may gather information from sensors and operational procedures for further analysis in order to increase output and reduce waste. The system is affordable since it was constructed primarily using open-source software and low-cost embedded components with an ergonomic architecture. The results of the comparison show that the automatic method outperforms the human approach in terms of quality and production yield. © 2023 River Publishers

Self-efficacy is critical for improving computational thinking in gaming. However, conventional assessment methods like questionnaires can produce disengaged responses or require additional work to understand the questions and have limitations in the assessment of dynamic self-efficacy. To address this challenge, this study proposes a method using in-game features to assess self-efficacy, which can change over the playtime. The employed in-game feature is the Planning Stage, in which learners strategize and prepare their approach before engaging with challenges. We collect data on the time spent in this stage, which is newly proposed in this study. The experiment was conducted with twenty-five students in the Multimedia Technology and Animation Major playing Tenacity-P to accomplish tasks from a computer programming course. To validate the method, we compared self-efficacy results from the game-based approach with those from conventional questionnaires. The findings highlight the need for strategic planning in managing difficult tasks. As challenges increased, performance measures varied more, underscoring the importance of strong problem-solving skills. Efficient strategic planning directly improved self-efficacy, as participants with better planning skills maintained higher self-efficacy despite increasing task difficulty. ©2024 IEEE.

Dementia (DM) and heart failure (HF) are prevalent and concerning medical conditions among older adults. Several studies indicate that individuals with HF have more risk of developing DM, underscoring the significant correlation between these two conditions. This proposed classification model employed Extra Trees (ETs) to develop a classification model for dementia and heart failure from electronic health records from Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, totally 4,297 records. The imbalanced data was addressed by using Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique for Nominal and Continuous (SMOTENC). Its performance was evaluated against other methods, including Decision Trees (DT), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting (GB), and Adaptive Boosting (AB). The findings indicated that the proposed ET model surpasses alternative methods in accuracy (89.11%), precision (94.92%), recall (92.50%), F-measure (93.70%), and receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (ROC AUC) score (78.88%). © 2025 IEEE.

This research introduces the development and application of a DIY LoRaWAN Gateway operating in the 925MHz frequency band. LoRaWAN technology is well-known for its long-range communication capabilities and low power consumption. Currently, it has a limited user base compared to Wi-Fi due to the high cost of gateways in the market. Consequently, existing gateways have been customized to be compatible with cost-effective devices. Therefore, we propose a cost-effective, medium-sized, customizable design that significantly reduces costs. For this development, Raspberry Pi 4 is used as the main processing unit integrated with the SX1302 module. We configure the gateway to facilitate smooth communication between EndNode gateways and NetworkServer and ensure flexibility in component format adjustments to meet the requirements of various projects. The objective of this project is to make low-cost LoRaWAN Gateways accessible through efficient and cost-effective solutions, serving as excellent mediators for communication. These gateways can be self-built and cater to diverse target groups such as individual users, manufacturers, and smart farm owners. The aim is to facilitate widespread convenience in usage and promote innovation in IoT applications. © 2024 IEEE.

The need for ultimate security in the enterprise network is significantly crucial in today's network. Likewise, redundancy, availability, and reliability are the primary main key to an internet connection. Mostly, network administrators use multiple routers and firewalls in their networks. In essence, asymmetric traffic imposes a serious issue with those designs and in some occasions the network traffic might be disturbed. In order to address the asymmetric connection to the firewall, this work proposes by use of another segment network for multi-routers and a firewall called a fusion network. In addition, this paper takes advantage of the existing enhanced technology such as MP-BGP MPLS VPN. Moreover, applying to the real world is also considered. Finally, the comparison with other network designs and the performance of our design are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.
