Tinnitus is the perception of phantom sounds in the ears or in the head. Sound therapy techniques for tinnitus have been proposed. To account for mechanisms of tinnitus generation and the clinical effects of sound therapies from the viewpoint of neural engineering, we have proposed a plastic neural network model for the human auditory system. We found that this model has a bistable state, i.e., a stable oscillatory state and a stable equilibrium (non-oscillatory) state coexist at a certain parameter region. We also found that the oscillation can be inhibited by supplying sinusoidal stimulus, which is hypothesized as sound for treatment of tinnitus, to the model. By hypothesizing that the oscillation and the equilibrium correspond to generation and inhibition of tinnitus, respectively, we reported that these phenomena could explain the fact that the habituated human auditory system temporarily halts perception of tinnitus following sound therapy. This paper describes dynamical properties of the model and inhibition of the oscillation for two kinds of noise stimuli which correspond to sound for treatment of tinnitus in clinical. Through numerical simulations we found that adequate noise stimulus can inhibits the oscillation.

This paper proposes a new frequency transformation method for improving the asymmetrical attenuation characteristics of a conventional lumped element band-pass filter (BPF). This new method results in formulas for filter components. The performance of a BPF designed using this method is tested using simulation and measurement. Since the new BPF design method is shown to be very useful for designing BPFs with wide passbands, it is applicable to broadband wireless communication filters, such as those used in ultra-wide band (UWB) wireless communication technology.

The microstrip antenna suits the features mentioned except for its narrow bandwidth, typically from less than 1% to several percent. This paper introduces an alternative approach in enhancing the bandwidth of the microstrip antenna to reduce its limitation. The wireless application that is selected to be studied is the wireless local area network (WLAN) application operating at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. Retinal prosthesis represents the best near-term hope for individuals with chronic blinding disease of the outer retina. However the small number of stimulating electrodes produces a poor, low resolution image. We propose a new preprocessing method for epi-retinal implants and validate it through a novel simulation of the implanted blind perception. Twenty-one normally sighted, untrained subjects performed a face recognition test. Three different electrodes grids were simulated: rectangular, hexagonal and log-polar. A new detection scheme, namely AND subtraction technique is proposed and presented in this paper. The theory is being elaborated and experimental results have been done by comparing double-weight (DW) code against the existing code, Hadamard. In this paper we have proved that AND subtraction technique gives better bit error rates (BER) performance than complementary subtraction technique against the received power level. The overall system cost and complexity can be reduced by using less number of filters in this technique. At the same time, the performance of the OCDMA system is improved significantly because with less number of filters in the decoder, the total power loss can be reduced and this can be clearly seen in the result
