Long hours of automobile driving under monotonous situations may cause the lowering of what we term a driver's activation state (DAS) or in other words the production of drowsiness, resulting in an increased risk of a traffic accident. There is therefore a need to create a newly advanced system focused on the DAS in-car, hopefully thus avoiding potentially dangerous situations. In order to develop such a system as a final goal, we have firstly set out to acquire such cardiovascular variables as beat-by-beat blood pressure (BP), RR interval from ECG and normalized pulse volume (NPV) used as a peripheral vascular tone of alpha-adrenergic sympathetic activity, during presentation to the driver of a screen movie simulating monotonous travel at constant speed on a test-course. Subsequently, we have investigated the reactivity in terms of the driver's cardiovascular hemodynamics. Through the successful monitoring of cardiovascular parameters during the movie presentation obtained in 11 healthy male subjects, the following results were obtained: The monotonous driving produces a statistically significant gradual rise in BP following drowsiness, which could be explained by enhancement of sympathetic activity using a time-frequency analysis of BP and RR. This finding strongly indicates that continuous driving in such monotonous situations can make a driver considerably stressful and thus may cause a gradual increase in BP, and that this gradual BP increase may be used as a possible index relevant to the DAS. This finding was also confirmed by the analysis of NPV, suggesting that the gradual increase in BP during the monotonous driving would be rather caused by a regulation of peripheral vasomotor constriction

There are lots of attempts in automotive field to supersede mechanical parts with electrical ones owing to increasing needs of drivers' safety, comfort and convenience as well as recent tightened environmental regulation. In addition, continuous improvements of semiconductor technology make it speed up to use electric components instead of conventional mechanical and hydraulic ones. In accordance with these tendencies, the demand of electric power and energy used in vehicle has been increasing steadily, and it will cause overburden of conventional 14 V power generation and distribution system. A research on higher voltage system started in early 1990s and 42 V power system has been introduced for a future automotive power-net. In this paper, technical trend in energy storage system which implies one of the key technologies to implement 42 V power-net is reviewed, and development results of the improved energy storage system consisted of ultracapacitor, battery and management controllers are presented

Mobility support for Internet devices is very important, since mobile computing is getting more widespread. Since these devices are wireless and therefore mobile, they will derive great benefit form Mobile IPv6. Mobile IPv6 was designed to be a natural outgrowth of Mobile IPv4, just as IPv6 itself was designed to be a natural outgrowth of IPv4. A wireless test-bed was setup to see the performance of the handover. The wireless test-bed consists of hardware, software and network analyzes tools to monitor the handover operation. The hardware consists of a multicast router, 2 access point, home agent, mobile node. We analyzed packet loss, packet delay and handover delay in Mobile IPv6 wireless test-bed. Finally, it is concluded the average packet delay is 0.7s, the handover delay for the first handover (macro-mobility) is 4.4s (44 packet loss) and 4.2s (42 packet loss) during the second handover (micro-mobility). The behavior and performance of Mobile IPv6 scheme can be seen. © 2005 IEEE.

Billions of portable computing devices such as mobile phone, laptop and palmtop computers are becoming widely available. Since these devices are wireless and therefore mobile, they will derive great benefit form Mobile IPv6. The main goal of Mobile IPv6 is that a mobile node is always addressable by its home address, whether it is currently attached to its home link or is away from home. Mobile IPv6 enables applications running on an Internet node to survive physical reconnection by inserting a few additional features at the network layer In this paper focus is given on a micro-mobility base test-bed development with improved algorithm. The test-bed consists of both hardware and software including four personal computers and one laptop. Laptop is used as mobile host (MH), two personal computers is acting as access point, one personal computer becomes home agent (HA) and one personal computer is used as multicast router (ML). This test-bed is used to verify the theoretical enhancement of micromobility handover algorithm and results (packet loss, handover delay and quality of service). There is no signaling traffic overload between MH, HA and correspondent host (CH), low handover delay-approximately below I Oms and good reception of video stream. © 2005 IEEE.

The swinging up control for a remotely driven Acrobot (RDA) is studied and an energy based controller is designed via the Lyapunov stability theory. The analysis of convergence of the energy as well as the motion of the RDA under the controller is presented. The conditions on control parameters for achieving a successful swinging up control are given. Furthermore, simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the presented theoretical results. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

This paper presents a technique using current-mode approach for a CMOS variable-gain low noise amplifier, emphasizing on low power consumption and low noise factor at 1.8 GHz using standard 0.18 μm CMOS process. Rivaling classical designs in performance, this design has controllable gain range from 12.85 dB to 8.26 dB by varying current without changes in supply, Vdd as well as keeping noise factor minimum by introducing an additional capacitance. As a result, very low noise factor become possible at very low power consumption level through current-mode approach. © 2005 IEEE.

The purpose of this study is to apply a free-space optical interconnection to a reconfigurable board-to-board connection where the wiring patterns connecting boards are optically formed without electrical-optical conversion. We regard a photorefractive bi-directional connection module (PBCM) based on a mutually pumped phase conjugate mirror as a key device to construct such a connection network and employ PBCMs at input/output interfaces of each board. Although optical behaviors of PBCM are influenced by the exposure conditions, we especially focus on the diameter of beams illuminating photorefractive media placed inside PBCM so as to find some geometrical restrictions hi a design of networking system. Through numerical analyses, we show a sample configuration of PBCM for the board-to-board interconnection and present a conceptual design of input/output interface.

Spatial filtering using smart antenna has emerged as a promising technique to improve the performance of cellular systems. Cell splitting and sectorisation in CDMA systems could result in an increase in system capacity. In this paper, we investigate the impact of inter-cell interference on reverse link capacity in a joint multiple access system arising from the combination of CDMA and SDMA systems. The system capacity of CDMA and SDMA systems is reviewed individually. The co-channel and antenna side-lobes interferences in SDMA systems due to the randomly located mobile users in a non-uniform traffic cell are studied. Therefore, the most realistic reverse link capacity improvement of the joint multiple access system is presented here by taking into consideration both intra-sector and inter-sector interferences. The results are based on the system parameters of CDMA and SDMA systems. © 2005 IEEE.

The choice of CDMA spreading sequences predetermines the properties of the system. The properties of large area synchronous (LAS) CDMA system have been demonstrated an interference free window (IFW) compared to traditional CDMA systems. This IFW property, however, has a limited delay-offset range. It is not always possible that all the channel-induced multipath delay spread components will arrive within IFW delay-offset range if the conventional antenna is employed. In this paper, the high directive narrow beam of smart antenna system is employed to direct all the multipath propagation components to arrive within the IFW range. Moreover, smart antenna system with its mathematical model is described. The reduction of multipath propagation in smart antenna system is also described. Finally, system performance analysis in terms of BER and maximum delay spread in both conventional and smart antennas are presented. © 2005 IEEE.

The most important property in wireless systems, when it comes to increasing spectral efficiency, is eliminating interference. Recently, there are several new multiple access schemes and duplexing systems have been introduced in wireless systems to overcome several major interferences such as inter symbol interference, multiple access interference and adjacent cell interference. In this paper, we introduce a new duplexing system so-called space division duplex which can eliminate all kinds of interference. This new duplexing system consists of smart antenna's multiple steered narrow beams and orthogonal large area synchronous spread spectrum codes. The purpose is to increase system capacity while maintain its zero correlation window characteristics. The major types of interference and the properties of large area synchronous codes to combat these major interferences are studied. The overviews of code division duplexing system applying these orthogonal smart codes in wireless environment are analyzed. These analyses have shown that the number of orthogonal codes utilization is limited. The proposed solutions of space division duplexing system with several advantages are presented. Besides that, the code reuse concept is proposed to overcome the limitation of orthogonal codes. Finally, the system performances in term of spectral efficiency and capacity are presented. © 2005 IEEE.
