When she returned to Canada she relocated to California. She spent a number of years living both in Los Angeles and coastal Northern California interspersed with several extended trips through the United States Mexico and Central America. Ms. McCulloch moved to Victoria British Columbia in 1989 and a year later registered in the cooperative education program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria. She is presently in the fifth and final year of the program and has her sights set on graduate school. Besides the work described in this article she has been very much involved in the use of technology to assist in the delivery of curriculum at the senior secondary level. She lives on a country property a half-hour from the University with her husband her horse and three cats. W. Alfred Keddy:is an applications programmer/analyst for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria. He received a BEng (1988) in Electrical Engineering and an MASc (1994) from the University of Victoria. His research interests include distributed systems image processing local area networks VLSI and DSP system design for computation and communication and human–computer interface design. Maria A. Stuchly:received an MSc in Electrical Engineering in 1962 from Warsaw Technical University and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1970. Between the years of 1962 and 1970 she was with the Warsaw Technical University an Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Contents and implementation of a computer laboratory for undergraduate electromagnetics are described. The laboratory consists of four 3-hour sessions covering vector calculus, Maxwell's equations (integral and differential forms), wave propagation in materials, and wave behavior at planar interfaces. Each session contains theory (in the Help file), animations (where relevant) and a quiz. The program runs on IBM compatible 486-based PCs in a Windows environment and uses the Borland C ++ 4.0 compiler.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE CONGESTION EFFECTS OF LINK FAILURES IN WIDE AREA NETWORKS

In this paper, we present the results of a study to determine the effects of link failures on the performance of a network in terms of the occurrence of congestion due to traffic restoration after a failure. The network studied is a virtual circuit based packet switched wide area network. A generic queueing framework is developed to study the effect of failures and the subsequent traffic restoration on network performance. In general, the congestion resulting after a failure is a transient phenomenon. Hence, a numerical methods based nonstationary queueing analysis is conducted in order to quantify the effects of failures in terms of the transient behavior of queue lengths and packet loss probabilities. A bounding relationship is developed whereby a network node can determine whether or not congestion will occur as the result of traffic restoration after a failure.

In this note, we consider orthogonal wavelets with the oversampling property. We prove that if an orthogonal scaling function with exponential decay has the oversampling property, then it has the sampling property (i.e., it takes values 1 at 0 and 0 at other integers);therefore, an orthogonal scaling function with compact support has the oversampling property if and only if it is the Haar function. © 1994, Birkhäuser Boston. PID control schemes based on classical control theory, have been widely used for real control systems. Further, there are a lot of researches on control schemes of tuning PID gains. Also several self-tuning and autotuning techniques in the PID control systems have been reported for systems with unknown parameters. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no result for discrete-time systems with unknown time-delays. On the other hand, a generalized predictive control scheme has been reported as a useful self-tuning control technique for unknown time-delay systems. In this paper, we present a self-tuning PID control algorithm for unknown time-delay systems based on minimization of a GPC criterion. Furthermore, we illustrate a numerical simulation result in order to show the effectiveness of this method.

An average model of tapped inductor (TI) PWM topology was developed and verified experimentally. The proposed generic and topology independent model is compatible with SPICE and can be run on any electronic circuit simulator for DC (static transfer function), AC (small signal) and TRAN (large signal, time domain) analyses. The model can also be applied to derive analytical expressions of static and dynamic transfer functions. It is shown that the classical PWM topologies are private cases of the TI topologies and can be analyzed and simulated by the TI model developed in this study. The proposed simulation methodology was applied to study the advantages and weaknesses of TI PWM topologies.< >

Propagation characteristics of guided wares in dielectric wareguides with, slanted gratings is presented for the general three-dimensional cases of oblique propagation. The analysis is formulated in a unified matrix form so that guidance, properties can be obtained accurately in any level by systematic matrix calculations. The numerical results an given for a grating with square corrngation and the effects of the slant angle and oblique propagation is clarified.

In this paper, we examine design issues relevant to the implementation of a data link layer of a home automation system based on the Electronics Industries Association (EIA) Consumer Electronics Bus (CEBus). The hardware and software components of the system are described along with several techniques that enhance the performance of the system, allow for a faster implementation using off-the-shelf components and provide low overhead. The proposed design has been incorporated into a basic home automation system (BHAS) that is used as a testbed for alternative technologies and algorithms.

The image restoration problems that arise in early vision are formulated as ill-posed inverse problems. Through regularization, they should be well-posedly solved. This is an approach to exact modeling for constraints on visual systems. The problem of modeling for constraints can be regarded as that of estimating the mean of the marginal conditional distribution of a random function based on prior information. First, the basic models with non-symmetric half plane causality for noisy image are introduced. Secondly, the parameters of the image model can be estimated from distorted image using the adaptive identification technique based on multiple edge models. Thirdly, after reformulating the restoration problem as a class of Bayesian estimation problems, this can be well-posedly solved using a 2-D Kalman filter-type algorithm with edge-adaptation. The algorithm makes it possible to optimize a stochastic image model from the standpoint of A Bayesian Information Criterion. Lastly, identification and restoration examples are given to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of our approach.

The authors discuss the potential of artificial neural networks for automating expert visual classifications undertaken in the marine sciences. They illustrate their application with two examples and show their performance, in those cases, to be strongly constrained by the nature of the training data. A proposal for escaping these data limitations is described which involves providing networks with multiple, coarse input channels. They provide evidence that performance is enhanced by this technique and suggest that it may be possible to construct networks which have a general ability to learn specific visual discriminations.< >

Obtained a B.Sc. in Pure and Applied Physics with Electronics in 1983 and an M.Sc. in Modern Electronics in 1984 from the University of Nottingham U.K. He was a project engineer on the Corporate Data Network for the Central Electricity Generating Board U.K. and then a senior lecturer in communication systems at the University of Greenwich UK. At present he is working on his Ph.D. at the Centre for Satellite Engineering Research (CSER) University of Surrey on the performance of communication systems. Has been Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering University of Surrey since 1984. She is the author (or joint author) of more than 80 research papers. Currently she teaches courses in Telecommunication Networks and Computer Architecture. Her research interests include on-board processing for satellites protocols and performance issues. Received the BSc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Microwave Systems from the University of Leeds in 1965/1968. He was British Telecom Lecturer-Reader in Telecommunications Systems at the University of Essex from 1969–1983. In 1983 he was appointed to the Alec Harley Reeves Chair of Information Systems Engineering at the University of Surrey and in 1990 became the first Director of the post-graduate centre for Satellite Engineering Research which houses some 100 researchers. The use of communication satellites as a possible way of offering broadband island interconnectivity appears to be a very attractive option, as it will enable the provision of an all-digital, transparent service to a number of ATM islands spanning a wide area, accommodating efficiently a variety of traffic demands. The CATALYST Project (RACE II/R2074) is an attempt to demonstrate the applicability and compatibility of satellite technology with the terrestrial BISDN. In this paper we present an overview of the project and focus on an initial study of the expected user performance through the CATALYST network. Our analysis is based upon mathematical and simulation models and describes the end-system to end-system transfer delay for given message lengths. The protocol profiles assume a mix of Novell NetWare and Network File System client/server architectures, which are supported by either the IEEE 802.3/Ethernet or fibre distributed data interface LANs, which are themselves linked via LAN/ATM/satellite interface units. Areas of further investigation, and the implication of our analysis on the actual network architecture, are discussed.
