E-health is closely related with networks and telecommunications when dealing with applications of collecting or transferring medical data from distant locations for performing remote medical collaborations and diagnosis. In this book we provide an overview of the fields of image and signal processing for networked and distributed e-health applications and their supporting technologies. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference, Networking 2010. Papers were solicited in three broad topic areas: applications and services, network technologies, and internet design. All papers were considered on their merits by a uni?ed Technical ProgramCommittee (TPC); there was no attempt to enforce a quota among topic areas. We believe the resulting program is an excellentrepresentationofthebreadthofrecentadvancesinnetworkingresearch. This year, the conference received 101 full paper submissions from 23 co- trieson?vecontinents,re?ectingastrongdiversityinthenetworkingcommunity. Similarly, the 92 members of the TPC are from 21 countries and include a mix of academic, industry, and governmental a?liations. The TPC members, aided by some 50 external reviewers, provided a total of 470 reviews and follow-up discussions totaling more than 200 messages. The ?nal selections were made at a TPC meeting hosted by Columbia University in New York City, with both in-person and remote participation. In total, authors of accepted papers have academic and industry a?liations in 15 countries. We ?nally selected 24papers for presentationduring the conference technical sessions. A small number of papers were assigned a shepherd from the TPC to assist in paper revision. These statistics represent an acceptance rate of just under 24%, comparable to that of previous years. The TPC also identi?ed several papers that re?ect particularly promising early results; these papers were selected for presentation as work-in-progress papers and are identi?ed as such in the proceedings.

This was the first conference jointly organized by the IFIP Working Groups 6. 2, 6. 3, and 6. 4. Each of these three Working Groups has its own established series of conferences. Working Group 6. 2 sponsors the Broadband communications series of conferences (Paris 1995, Montreal 1996, Lisboa 1997, Stuttgart 1998, and Hong-Kong 1999). Working Group 6. 3 sponsors the Performance of communicationsystems series of conferences (Paris 1981, Zürich 1984, Rio de Janeiro 1987, Barcelona 1990, Raleigh 1993, Istanbul 1995, and Lund 1998). Working Group 6. 4 sponsors the High Performance Networking series of conferences (Aaren 1987, Liège 1988, Berlin 1990, Liège 1992, Grenoble 1994, Palma 1995, New York 1997, Vienna 1998). It is expected that this new joint conference will take place every two years. In view of the three sponsoring Working Groups, there were three separate tracks, one per Working Group. Each track was handled by a different co chairman. Specifically, the track of Working Group 6. 2 was handled by Ulf Körner, the track of Working Group 6. 3 was handled by Ioanis Stavrakakis, and the track of Working Group 6. 4 was handled by Serge Fdida. The overall program committee chairman was Harry Perros, and the general conference chairman was Guy Pujolle. A total of 209 papers were submitted to the conference of which 82 were accepted. Each paper was submitted to one of the three tracks.

The First International Workshop on Traffic Monitoring and Analysis (TMA 2009) was an initiative from the COST Action IC0703 "Data Traffic Monitoring and Analysis: Theory, Techniques, Tools and Applications for the Future Networks" (***). The COST program is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally funded research on a European level. Each COST Action contributes to reducing the fragmentation in research and opening the European Research Area to cooperation worldwide. Traffic monitoring and analysis (TMA) is now an important research topic within the field of networking. It involves many research groups worldwide that are coll- tively advancing our understanding of the Internet. The importance of TMA research is motivated by the fact that modern packet n- works are highly complex and ever-evolving objects. Understanding, developing and managing such environments is difficult and expensive in practice. Traffic monitoring is a key methodology for understanding telecommunication technology and improving its operation, and the recent advances in this field suggest that evolved TMA-based techniques can play a key role in the operation of real networks. Moreover, TMA offers a basis for prevention and response in network security, as typically the det- tion of attacks and intrusions requires the analysis of detailed traffic records. On the more theoretical side, TMA is an attractive research topic for many reasons.

The conference continues from previous events held in Zaragoza (2004), Copenhagen (2005), Krakow (2006), Regensburg (2007) and Turin (2008). The advances in the information and communication technologies (ICT) have raised new opportunities for the implementation of novel applications and the pro- sion of high-quality services over global networks. The aim is to utilize this ‘infor- tion society era’ for improving the quality of life for all citizens, disseminating knowledge, strengthening social cohesion, generating earnings and finally ensuring that organizations and public bodies remain competitive in the global electronic m- ketplace. Unfortunately, such a rapid technological evolution cannot be problem free. Concerns are raised regarding the ‘lack of trust’ in electronic procedures and the - tent to which ‘information security’ and ‘user privacy’ can be ensured. TrustBus 2009 brought together academic researchers and industry developers, who discussed the state of the art in technology for establishing trust, privacy and security in digital business.
