An FIR filter is implemented in this work. Enhancing the arithmetic operations of the filter is considered. For the addition operation, the signed-digit number system is utilized. For the multiplication operation, Booth-3 algorithm is used to reduce the number of partial products. Then a 1D filter is used to construct a 2D filter that is deployed on real hardware in an image processing application.

Two-stage channel estimation for hybrid RIS assisted MIMO systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been proposed as a key enabler to improve the coverage of the signals and mitigate the frequent blockages in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. However, the channel state information (CSI) acquisition is one of the major challenges for the practical deployment of the RIS. The passive RIS without any baseband processing capabilities brings difficulty on the channel estimation (CE), since the individual channels or the cascaded one can be estimated only at base station (BS) via uplink training or mobile station (MS) via downlink training. In order to facilitate the CSI acquisition, we focus on the hybrid RIS architecture, where a small number of elements are active and able to receive and process the pilot signals at the RIS. The CE is performed in two stages by following the atomic norm minimization to recover the channel parameters, i.e., angles of departure (AoDs), angles of arrival (AoAs), and propagation path gains. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can outperform the passive RIS CE under the same training overhead. Furthermore, we also study the theoretical performance limits in terms of mean square error (MSE) via Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analyses. © 2021, CC BY.

The integration of Satellite-Terrestrial Networks (ISTN) necessitates advanced security measures, particularly Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). This study introduces hybrid sequential intrusion detection models for ISTNs, combining Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The models employ both anomaly-based and signature-based detection to enhance accuracy, utilizing methods such as Extra Trees (ET), Decision Trees (DT), Random Forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU). These models are chosen for their superior performance and are used sequentially to improve IDSs effectiveness. RF-based Sequential Feature Selection (RF-SFS) is also utilized to reduce dataset dimensionality, which in turn decreases the computational costs for each model. Evaluations using UNSW-NB15 and STIN datasets-representing terrestrial and satellite traffic, respectively-demonstrate the models' superiority over traditional IDSs. The XGB-ET model achieved 99.99% accuracy in anomaly detection, while the XGB-GRU model attained 89% accuracy in signature-based detection on the UNSW-NB15 dataset. On the STIN dataset, the ET-DT-GRU model reached 96.47% accuracy in signature-based detection. Additionally, RF-SFS reduced execution times, with training and testing speedups up to 2.8x.

The electrical engineering program at the Milwaukee School of engineering (MSOE) has integrated a bilateral faculty teaching component into its international student exchange program. Considerable flexibility was needed to adjust to faculty availability and the major differences in academic calendars between the two institutions. Specifically, MSOE is a private institution on a quarter system and its partner university is the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences in Lübeck, Germany which utilizes the semester system and is a state university. Among the problems that needed to be overcome is that the semester versus quarter systems simply didn't align and neither institution has the resources to allow faculty absences for an entire academic year. At the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences the MSOE faculty generally teach a short intensive 2 week course at the end of the spring semester. An appropriate number of credits and associated grade are given and entered on both university transcripts. The Lübeck university faculty visit MSOE in the fall quarter to participate in the project defense of their own students who perform their Diplom Arbeit (senior thesis project) at a company generally in the Milwaukee region. During the visit the Lübeck faculty also provide a series of special topic lectures in various courses depending on the expertise of the faculty member. The benefits of the faculty exchange are many. Not just does the experience foster a stronger bond to the partner abroad, but the presence of the faculty serves to assure the students that the home institution is paying attention to their welfare and academic progress. The most essential thing we have come to believe is that while good academics are essential to a program, it is the relationships between the people involved in the program that determines a truly successful international program. The faculty exchange aspect has become a lynchpin of our exchange program. © American Society for engineering Ed

Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO)-based thin film transistors (TFTs) are increasingly becoming popular because of their potential in futuristic applications, including CMOS technology. Given the demand for CMOS-compatible, ultra-scaled, reliable, and high-performing devices, we fabricate and analyze scaled-channel a-IGZO-TFTs with an optimal double-gate structure, a thin nanosheet-based channel, and an effective high- κ dielectric namely HfO2. The reliably reported double gate IGZO nanosheet TFTs (DG-IGZO-NS-TFTs) are tested under positive and negative bias stress at variant temperatures, and the resulting modulations are analyzed critically. The reported DG-IGZO-NSTFTs exhibit a negative side threshold voltage shift (Δ Vth) accompanied by an increase in Ion/Ion(0) under negative bias temperature stress (NBTS) at elevated temperatures, which indicates the presence of additional charges. An anomalous negative side shifting of the Vth is observed under positive bias temperature stress (PBTS), where diffused hydrogen atoms are identified as introducing excess n-type carriers into the channel and causing the observed Δ Vth. The spectroscopic analysis is performed to establish evidence for the assumed mechanisms, and the role of individual gates is investigated in the context of performance variance under temperature-bias stress. Moreover, the partial reversibility of the stress-induced degradation is experimentally established and methodically discussed. Overall, the reported results offer a comprehensive understanding of scaled-channel DG-NS-IGZO-TFTs, which help shape performance-enhancement strategies, control degradation mechanisms, and define appropriate application scenarios. © 2013 IEEE.

In 2018, around 22,000 people were killed in road accidents in Thailand and more than 80% of road accidents involved motorcycles. There are several reasons and one of them is motorcycles driving in the wrong direction. Our paper proposes a system for road surveillance to detect and track moving vehicle's direction on two-way traffic roads from CCTV viewpoint using deep learning where the roadside noise is filtered out. The system can determine whether the vehicles drive in the correct direction in their lane. In this case, we will focus on motorcycles. To set up the system, there are two main steps: draw the area of interest and validate the correct direction. In the direction validation process, we detect and track vehicles by using YOLOv4-tiny and Deep SORT tracking algorithm. The system returns a satisfactory and accurate result for detecting direction without noise, such as moving objects on the sidewalk or moving vehicles in an unwanted area. © 2021 IEEE.

Energy-efficient knowledge distillation for spiking Neural Networks

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have been gaining interest as energy-efficient alternatives of conventional artificial neural networks (ANNs) due to their event-driven computation. Considering the future deployment of SNN models to constrained neuromorphic devices, many studies have applied techniques originally used for ANN model compression, such as network quantization, pruning, and knowledge distillation, to SNNs. Among them, existing works on knowledge distillation reported accuracy improvements of student SNN model. However, analysis on energy efficiency, which is also an important feature of SNN, was absent. In this paper, we thoroughly analyze the performance of the distilled SNN model in terms of accuracy and energy efficiency. In the process, we observe a substantial increase in the number of spikes, leading to energy inefficiency, when using the conventional knowledge distillation methods. Based on this analysis, to achieve energy efficiency, we propose a novel knowledge distillation method with heterogeneous temperature parameters. We evaluate our method on two different datasets and show that the resulting SNN student satisfies both accuracy improvement and reduction of the number of spikes. On MNIST dataset, our proposed student SNN achieves up to 0.09% higher accuracy and produces 65% less spikes compared to the student SNN trained with conventional knowledge distillation method. Improving document-level sentiment classification using importance of sentences

Previous researchers have considered sentiment analysis as a document classification task, in which input documents are classified into predefined sentiment classes. Although there are sentences in a document that support important evidences for sentiment analysis and sentences that do not, they have treated the document as a bag of sentences. In other words, they have not considered the importance of each sentence in the document. To effectively determine polarity of a document, each sentence in the document should be dealt with different degrees of importance. To address this problem, we propose a document-level sentence classification model based on deep neural networks, in which the importance degrees of sentences in documents are automatically determined through gate mechanisms. To verify our new sentiment analysis model, we conducted experiments using the sentiment datasets in the four different domains such as movie reviews, hotel reviews, restaurant reviews, and music reviews. In the experiments, the proposed model outperformed previous state-of-the-art models that do not consider importance differences of sentences in a document.
