Nowadays, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are effective platforms for implementing complex algorithms (e.g., for Artificial Intelligence) in different domains (e.g., automotive and robotics), where massive parallelism and high computational effort are required. In some domains, strict safety-critical requirements exist, mandating the adoption of mechanisms to detect faults during the operational phases of a device. An effective test solution is based on Self-Test Libraries (STLs) aiming at testing devices functionally. This solution is frequently adopted for CPUs, but can also be used with GPUs. Nevertheless, the in-field constraints restrict the size and duration of acceptable STLs. This work proposes a method to automatically compact the test programs of a given STL targeting GPUs. The proposed method combines a multi-level abstraction analysis resorting to logic simulation to extract the microarchitectural operations triggered by the test program and the information about the thread-level activity of each instruction and to fault simulation to know its ability to propagate faults to an observable point. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it requires a single fault simulation to perform the compaction. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was evaluated, resorting to several test programs developed for an open-source GPU model (FlexGripPlus) compatible with NVIDIA GPUs. The results show that the method can compact test programs by up to 98.64% in code size and by up to 98.42% in terms of duration, with minimum effects on the achieved fault coverage. © 2022 EDAA.

Clustered Federated Learning (CFL), as a type of Federated Learning (FL) paradigm, divides the clients into multiple clusters through the clustering process and trains them within the clusters, thus improving the overall model training accuracy. But the clustering process is also the weak link, which can lead to the failure of the whole model training if it is interfered or destroyed by the attacker. In this paper, we study the attack methods and defense strategies for attackers to implement data poisoning by tampering with client data, resulting in overall clustering failure. Our defense approach is designed to identify anomalous clients and recover their poisoned data. In order to resist the malicious behavior of attackers, we propose a dual-threshold pixel difference and watermark authentication defense method for detecting the presence of anomalous clients. The method can accurately identify the abnormal fluctuations in the data and effectively screen out the abnormal clients. Meanwhile, we propose a self-embedding watermarking defense algorithm based on shuffling idea for recovering poisoned data. Among them, our self-embedding watermarking algorithm not only accurately locates and recovers the tampered region of the image, but also improves the watermark security to prevent attackers from cracking it easily. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can accurately identify the abnormal client and recover the data. Even if the client’s data is massively tampered with, we can recover the tampered data images with high quality and ensure that the CFL clustering is not corrupted. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In the effort to learn from extensive collections of distributed data, federated learning has emerged as a promising approach for preserving privacy by using a gradient-sharing mechanism instead of exchanging raw data. However, recent studies show that private training data can be leaked through many gradient attacks. While previous analytical-based attacks have successfully reconstructed input data from fully connected layers, their effectiveness diminishes when applied to convolutional layers. This paper introduces an advanced data leakage method to efficiently exploit convolutional layers’ gradients. We present a surprising finding: even with non-fully invertible activation functions, such as ReLU, we can analytically reconstruct training samples from the gradients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first analytical approach that successfully reconstructs convolutional layer inputs directly from the gradients, bypassing the need to reconstruct layers’ outputs. Prior research has mainly concentrated on the weight constraints of convolution layers, overlooking the significance of gradient constraints. Our findings demonstrate that existing analytical methods used to estimate the risk of gradient attacks lack accuracy. In some layers, attacks can be launched with less than 5 % of the reported constraints. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In traditional research approaches, sensory perception and emotion classification have traditionally been considered separate domains. Yet, the significant influence of sensory experiences on emotional responses is undeniable. The natural language processing (NLP) community has often missed the opportunity to merge sensory knowledge with emotion classification. To address this gap, we propose SensoryT5, a neuro-cognitive approach that integrates sensory information into the T5 (Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer) model, designed specifically for fine-grained emotion classification. This methodology incorporates sensory cues into the T5’s attention mechanism, enabling a harmonious balance between contextual understanding and sensory awareness. The resulting model amplifies the richness of emotional representations. In rigorous tests across various detailed emotion classification datasets, SensoryT5 showcases improved performance, surpassing both the foundational T5 model and current state-of-the-art works. Notably, SensoryT5’s success signifies a pivotal change in the NLP domain, highlighting the potential influence of neuro-cognitive data in refining machine learning models’ emotional sensitivity. © 2024 ELRA Language Resource Association.

Being able to compare machine learning models in terms of performance is a fundamental part of improving the state of the art in a field. However, there is a risk of getting locked into only using a few possibly not ideal performance metrics, only for comparability with earlier works. In this work, we explore the possibility of reconstructing new classification metrics starting from what little information may be available in existing works. We propose three approaches to reconstruct confusion matrices and, as a consequence, other classification metrics. We empirically verify the quality of the reconstructions, drawing conclusions on the usefulness that various classification metrics have for the reconstruction task. © 2022 IEEE.

In addition to increasing the output current, an interleaved buck converter can significantly reduce the current ripple at the output. However, the bottleneck of the interleaved buck converter application is the unbalanced inductor current. In order to achieve the current balance in the entire section of the duty cycle, this paper proposes a control architecture with interleaved alignment, using the adjustment of the duty cycle and phase offset, to analyze and realize a high output current and current balanced in three-arm series capacitor interleaved buck converters (SCIBCs) in this work. By analyzing and modeling the SCIBC and using a single-loop control architecture that feedbacks the output voltage, the proposed current-balancing method balances all inductors' current within the full duty cycle without any current sensor. In addition, the small-signal transfer function of the control signal to the output voltage and design of the controller parameters are derived according to the specification, and the SCIBC with the proposed current-balancing control with PI controller of the alignment of interleaved phase angle is constructed. The high output current and current-balancing characteristics of the proposed circuit control architecture are validated in the simulation tool SIMPLIS. © 2023 IEEE.

A fast decoding algorithm scheme is proposed for the quadratic residue code with code length of 47 and large error-correcting capacity of 5 errors in this paper, called optimized algebraic decoding algorithm (OADA). The main contributions of this article are to deduce a method to quickly compute the related unknown syndrome of (47,24,11) QR code and a simpler discriminant condition to detect whether four errors occurred in the received word. The decoding algorithm scheme needs lower memory requirement compared with the algorithm based on the full hard decision algebraic decoding algorithm. For exhaustive simulation test of all the error patterns shows that the proposed algorithm of (47, 24, 11) QR code improves the decoding performance and decoding efficiency. © 2022 IEEE.

Currently, deep reinforcement learning is widely used to transform the recommendation process into a sequential task. Despite this, the recommendation system continues to be plagued by data sparsity and cold start issues as a result of high online costs and a sparse user-item rating matrix. To address the aforementioned issues, this article proposes a social multi-agent reinforcement learning framework (MATR). Two agents collaborate within the framework to enhance the performance of conventional solutions. Specifically, one agent is responsible for capturing the dynamic preferences of users based on their interaction with the system. The other agent leverages a ubiquitous social network to minimise cold starts and data sparsity for some users. In addition, we designed a module for learning state representations from social networks and user rating matrices. To optimise the use of social networks in the state representation module, in addition to first-order social neighbour features, we used trust inference to discover high-level social neighbour features, and we integrated Feature aggregation modelling state representation with graph convolutional neural networks and attention mechanisms. Our method has been shown to be effective and advantageous using actual data sets. © 2022 IEEE.

It is essential to predict the level of trust among users before they interact to reduce the risk of interaction. Due to the sparsity of trust relationships, it is inefficient to simply use explicit trust relationships to predict the trust among users, and even the trust path may be lost. On the other hand, there are implicit trust relationships among users such as the joint items that several users all rated. Once the trust relationship is extracted, it will greatly expand the number of trusted users. To this end, a trust prediction method incorporating rating information is proposed to address this problem. It first constructs a heterogeneous information network consisting of social and rating information. Secondly, in the trust prediction period, if the user has no trusted users to choose from, the joint item is used as a bridge to find implicit trusted users from users who have jointly rated the item. Finally, the Dueling DQN algorithm is used to calculate the strength of the trust path, and the predicted trust value is derived by aggregating multiple trust paths based on an aggregation function. The experimental results on two datasets indicate the presented approach outperforms most existing trust prediction methods. © 2022 IEEE.

In UAV imagery, the intricate backgrounds combined with the high quantity and compact distribution of minute targets have consistently made target detection a formidable challenge in the realm of computer vision. This study introduces an enhancement over the YOLOv8 algorithm, wherein a sophisticated multi-scale convolutional layer, integrating depth-separable convolution, attention mechanisms, and multi-scale processing techniques, replaces the original model's convolution. Moreover, we introduce an attention mechanism for a Bi-Level Routing within the core component of the base model, and adjustments are made to the original model's loss function. Lastly, to confirm the viability of the enhanced model proposed in this paper, we conducted a validation of the metrics using publicly accessible datasets. The findings illustrate that the improved model outlined in this research substantially enhances target recognition accuracy in UAV images. Furthermore, the model exhibits superior performance in mitigating issues of duplicate detection and target omission. © 2023 IEEE.
