A game-theoretic model for the study of dynamic networks is analyzed. The model is motivated by communication networks that are subject to failure of nodes and where the restoration needs resources. The corresponding two-player game is played between "Destructor" (who can delete nodes) and "Constructor" (who can restore or even create nodes under certain conditions). We also include the feature of information flow by allowing Constructor to change labels of adjacent nodes. As objective for Constructor the network property to be connected is considered, either as a safety condition or as a reachability condition (in the latter case starting from a non-connected network). We show under which conditions the solvability of the corresponding games for Constructor is decidable, and in this case obtain upper and lower complexity bounds, as well as algorithms derived from winning strategies. A new method for the direct adaptive regulation of unknown nonlinear dynamical systems is proposed in this paper,paying special attention to the analysis of the model order *** method uses a neurofuzzy (NF) modeling of the unknown system,which combines fuzzy systems (FSs) with high order neural networks (HONNs).We propose the approximation of the unknown system by a special form of an NF-dynamical system (NFDS),which,however,may assume a smaller number of states than the original unknown *** omission of states,referred to as a model order problem,is modeled by introducing a disturbance term in the approximating *** development is combined with a sensitivity analysis of the closed loop and provides a comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the stability *** adaptive modification method,termed ‘parameter hopping’,is incorporated into the weight estimation algorithm so that the existence and boundedness of the control signal are always *** applicability and potency of the method are tested by simulations on well known benchmarks such as ‘DC motor’ and ‘Lorenz system’,where it is shown that it performs quite well under a reduced model order ***,the proposed NF approach is shown to outperform simple recurrent high order neural networks (RHONNs).

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Active vibration control of a light and flexible stress ribbon footbridge using pneumatic muscles

Abstract This paper describes the development of an active vibration control system for a light and flexible stress ribbon footbridge. The 13 m span Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) stress ribbon bridge was built in the laboratory of the Department of Civil and Structural engineering, Berlin Institute of Technology. Its lightness and flexibility result in high vibration sensitivity. To reduce pedestrian-induced vibrations, very light pneumatic muscle actuators are placed at handrail level introducing control forces. First, a reduced discretized analytical model is derived for the stress ribbon bridge. To verify the analytical prediction, experiments without feedback control are conducted. Based on this model, a velocity feedback control strategy is designed to actively control first mode vibrations. To handle the nonlinearities of the muscle actuator a subsidiary nonlinear force controller is implemented based on exact linearisation methods. The stability of the entire closed-loop system with actuator saturation is investigated by the Popov Criterion. control performance is verified by experiments. It is demonstrated that handrail introduced forces can efficiently control the first mode response.

This paper presents methodology of defining the sources of interferences on the basis of measuring the quality of electrical energy and monitoring the selected parameters of voltage and current waveforms. The presented methodology was based on the example of industrial power network that supplied the new electroprecipitator cooperating with sulphuric acid recovery installation. After a few weeks of proper operation, the Ż electroprecipitator started to report frequent alarms that hindered its effective use. The measurements aimed at specifying the effect of the quality of electrical energy and disturbances occurring in the network on the alarms generated by the electroprecipitator automatic control system. The example shows that as a result of use sophisticated measuring equipment and the analysis of preliminary (short-term) measurements and long-term measurements with the appropriate setting of recording events, it is possible to confirm or reject the hypothesis about the negative effect of low quality energy on the electroprecipitator operation.

In building fire evacuation, good guidance can speed up egress process and occupants may be injured due to lack of information and guidance. There are many studies on building egress systems, which use relevant information (e.g., fire condition and its evolution) to calculate and provide guidance to occupants. However, information used to generate guidance may be uncertain, and it is difficult to provide the guidance under uncertainty. How to provide effective guidance to occupants under uncertainty and how to evaluate the confidence of the guidance are critical issues. To describe the confidence of the guidance, the concept of "confidence intervals" is used. By comparing "confidence intervals" with a threshold, acceptable guidance is provided. Testing examples show that the confidence of the guidance can be evaluated and unacceptable guidance can be differentiated with the use of confidence intervals. © 2011 IEEE.

Path planning for robotic manipulators interacting with obstacles is considered, where an end-effector is to be driven to a goal region in minimum time, collisions are to be avoided, and kinematic and dynamic constraints are to be obeyed. The obstacles can be time-varying in their positions, but the positions should be known or estimated over the prediction horizon for planning the path. This non-convex optimization problem can be approximated by Mixed Integer Programs (MIPs), which usually leads to a large number of binary variables, and hence, to inacceptable computational time for the planning. In this paper, we present a geometric result whose application drastically reduces the number of binary decision variables in the aforementioned MIPs for 3D motion planning problems. This leads to a reduction in computational time, which is demonstrated for different scenarios.

In the paper a multicontroller-based switchable control system structure is proposed to control nonlinear MIMO plants. The considered structure contains a set of linear feedback controllers operating together with an additional, statically decoupled loop of the control system. The nonlinear model of a drilling vessel in three degrees of freedom (3DOF) on the sea surface is used as a MIMO plant to be controlled. The system synthesis is carried out by linearization of the adopted nonlinear plant model at its nominal “operating points” that depend on the preset ship yaw angle and the velocity of the see current. Performance of the proposed control systems is illustrated by examples of simulation results carried out in MATLAB/Simulink using the nonlinear model of low-frequency (LF) motions of WIMPEY SEALAB drilling vessel.

A flatness-based feed-forward control design approach for an open channel flow modelled by the shallow water equations is discussed. The control input consists of the adjustable height of opening of a delimiting sluice gate. In order to compute the trajectory of the control input, the physical boundaries containing the control input are neglected and the problem is reduced to an initial value problem w.r.t. the spatial coordinate. The solution to this problem can be obtained with the method of characteristics.
