Bi-clustering, also known as co-clustering, is a powerful data analysis technique that simultaneously clusters rows and columns of a data matrix, revealing hidden patterns. In this paper, we propose a neurodynamics-driven binary matrix factorization approach for bi-clustering binary data. The proposed method utilizes multiple discrete Hopfield networks operating concurrently to explore local optimal solutions. Furthermore, a particle swarm optimization rule is iteratively applied to reinitialize the neuronal states for directing the search toward better solutions. Comparative evaluations across six benchmark datasets reveal that the proposed method outperforms five existing methods in terms of five internal and external indices. © 2025 IEEE.

For medical images, domain shift is a very common phenomenon. To address this issue, researchers have proposed unsupervised domain adaptation and multi-source domain generalization. However, these methods are sometimes impractical for clinical applications since they need multi-domain data. To this end, single-source domain generalization has been further proposed. However, most single-source domain generalization methods are designed for grayscale medical images, making them unsuitable for color images such as fundus images. In this paper, we first propose a novel and effective Fourier transform-based data augmentation method for single-source domain color medical images, named spatial amplitude perturbation module (SAPM). The SAPM uses different Gaussian distributions to perturb different regions of the amplitude map obtained by FFT decomposition, thereby avoiding the need for information from other domains and ensuring the diversity of the augmented images. Then, we use feature sensitivity to guide the network to learn domain-invariant features, which can suppress feature channels sensitive to domain shift and emphasize feature channels insensitive to domain shift. We evaluate our method on a multi-domain fundus segmentation benchmark, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Explainable fake news detection predicts the authenticity of news items with annotated explanations. Today, Large Language Models (LLMs) are known for their powerful natural language understanding and explanation generation abilities. However, using LLMs for explainable fake news detection remains two main challenges. Firstly, fake news appears reasonable and could easily mislead LLMs, leaving them unable to understand the complex news-faking process. Secondly, utilizing LLMs for this task would generate correct and incorrect explanations, requiring abundant labor in the loop. In this paper, we propose LLM-GAN, a novel framework that utilizes prompting mechanisms to enable an LLM to function as a Generator and a Detector for realistic fake news generation and detection. Extensive experimental results demonstrate LLM-GAN's effectiveness in both prediction performance and explanation quality. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper introduces an autonomous and cost-effective method for assessing cycleway pavement roughness, using an action camera equipped with high-resolution sensors including an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a Global Positioning System (GPS). The methodology utilizes simplified quarter car model for bicycles, without manual intervention, to calculate International Roughness Index (IRI) for cycleway surface quality evaluation. It utilizes our novel approach to determine stable section from which average acceleration orientation vector is computed. For analysis we propose a corrected-roughness index (CRI), which is a quantized version of IRI. Experiments conducted on asphalt cycleways in Ireland revealed strong correlations between vehicle vibration and surface roughness. Results further demonstrate the consistency of the proposed model across different bikes through comparative analysis. Observations indicate bias in vibration data, influenced by different tire sizes and the mechanical features of the bicycles. Knee Osteoarthritis is a progressive and chronic knee joint disease that shows symptoms of pain, stiffness, and swelling and is diagnosed by knee radiographs. These radiographs are evaluated by radiologists using Kellgren and Lawrence’s (KL) grading scheme. According to this scheme, the knee radiograph is graded from KL grade 0 (i.e., Normal) to KL grade 4 (i.e., Severe) to assess the KOA severity. For an automated system, the first step is to localize knee joints from knee radiographs and then classify them according to the KL grading system. In this work, we have proposed vision-based transformers to localize knee joints. We also proposed a single-stage model to localize the knee and classify KOA using a single model. We also explored and compared the performance of various transformers using a multiclass image classification strategy. Since KL grades maintain intrinsic ordinal information of KL grades, we employed an ordinal classification-based strategy to improve automated knee osteoarthritis classification performance. A total of 10 models are trained and validated on multiple datasets, and visualizations are generated for the best model for better comprehension. Our model obtained state-of-the-art results for knee detection and ordinal X-ray classification for KOA. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests also indicate that the ordinal classification approach significantly improves the performance of models over traditional image classification approaches. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

SmartZone: Runtime Support for Secure and Efficient On-Device Inference on ARM TrustZone

On-device inference is a burgeoning paradigm that performs model inference locally on end devices, allowing private data to remain local. ARM TrustZone as a widely supported trusted execution environment has been applied to provide confidentiality protection for on-device inference. However, with the rise of large-scale models like large language models (LLMs), TrustZone-based on-device inference faces challenges in migration difficulties and inefficient execution. The rudimentary TEE OS on TrustZone lacks both the inference runtime needed for building models and the parallel support necessary to accelerate inference. Moreover, the limited secure memory resources on end devices further constrain the model size and degrade performance. In this paper, we propose SmartZone to provide runtime support for secure and efficient on-device inference on TrustZone. SmartZone consists three main components: (1) a trusted inference-oriented operator set, providing the underlying mechanisms adapted to the TrustZone’s execution mode for trusted inference of DNN models and LLMs. (2) the proactive multi-threading parallel support, which increases the number of CPU cores in the secure state via cross-world thread collaboration to achieve parallelism, and (3) the on-demand secure memory management method, which statically allocates the appropriate secure memory size based on pre-execution resource analysis. We implement a prototype of SmartZone on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ board and evaluate it on four well-known DNN models and llama2 LLM. Extensive experimental results show that SmartZone provides end-to-end protection for on-device inference while maintaining excellent performance. Compared to the origin trusted inference, SmartZone accelerates the inference speed by up to 4.26× and reduces energy consumption by 65.81%. © 1968-2012 IEEE.

Gloss-driven Conditional Diffusion Models for Sign Language Production

Sign Language Production (SLP) aims to convert text or audio sentences into sign language videos corresponding to their semantics, which is challenging due to the diversity and complexity of sign languages, and cross-modal semantic mapping issues. In this work, we propose a Gloss-driven Conditional Diffusion Model (GCDM) for SLP. The core of the GCDM is a diffusion model architecture, in which the sign gloss sequence is encoded by a Transformer-based encoder and input into the diffusion model as a semantic prior condition. In the process of sign pose generation, the textual semantic priors carried in the encoded gloss features are integrated into the embedded Gaussian noise via cross-attention. Subsequently, the model converts the fused features into sign language pose sequences through T-round denoising steps. During the training process, the model uses the ground-truth labels of sign poses as the starting point, generates Gaussian noise through T rounds of noise, and then performs T rounds of denoising to approximate the real sign language gestures. The entire process is constrained by the MAE loss function to ensure that the generated sign language gestures are as close as possible to the real labels. In the inference phase, the model directly randomly samples a set of Gaussian noise, generates multiple sign language gesture sequence hypotheses under the guidance of the gloss sequence, and outputs a high-confidence sign language gesture video by averaging multiple hypotheses. Experimental results on the Phoenix2014T dataset show that the proposed GCDM method achieves competitiveness in both quantitative performance and qualitative visualization. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). NeuroProbe: A Performance Profiling Feed Forward Neural Network Simulator for Hardware Interaction Analysis

NeuroProbe is a simple neural network simulator designed by authors specifically for educational purposes focusing on simulating inference phase on a computationally capable embedded hardware, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of hardware interactions and performance improvement. This simulator incorporates performance profiling capabilities, allowing students and educators to analyze and optimize the performance of a simulated trained neural network. By simulating the intricate hardware interactions, NeuroProbe enables users to gain insights into how various components impact the overall performance of neural networks. Using this simulator, learners can experiment with different configurations and architectures, identify potential bottlenecks, and explore optimization strategies to enhance neural network performance before deploying the model on an Edge Computing environment. It also enriches computer science education by enabling learners to gain deeper insights into hardware interactions and performance improvement. By identifying performance bottlenecks, learners can refine their understanding of neural networks and develop skills in optimizing their models for enhanced performance. In conclusion, NeuroProbe empowers users to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation of neural network on an embedded device, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of neural networks and their hardware requirements. Currently, it is focused solely on single-threaded CPU-based computation enabling SSE, AVX. At present, NeuroProbe does not support SIMD extensions such as AVX-FMA, AVX-512, multi-threaded computation, and accelerators such as NPU, TPU, and GPU. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Blockchain-based trust management for data exchange in internet of vehicle network

Internet of Vehicles (IoV) integrates with various heterogeneous nodes, such as connected vehicles, roadside units, etc., which establishes a distributed network. Vehicles are managed nodes providing all the services required during inter-vehicular communication which makes it essential to use a trust management mechanism. Existing trust management systems are insufficient to address the emerging IoV needs of transparency, mobility, immutability, and scalability. Motivated by the need to address the outlined issues, Proposed additive increase and multiplicative decrease (AIMD) trust management model, to improve the quality of communication, as well as vehicle trustworthiness based on multiple inter-vehicular interactions. The proposed layered architecture helps to reduce overhead in terms of latency and average execution time compared to other trust management mechanism and avoid risk of single point of failure. The Proposed AIMD trust management is implemented on permissioned blockchain, where transactions in the IoV network are only managed by minor nodes which accumulate interactions and uses PBFT and AIMD mechanism to derive immutable reputation score securely and transparently. Simulation results show the AIMD trust mechanism using permissioned blockchain can manage the trust of vehicles efficiently by reducing the latency by 0.29 sec, increasing packet delivery ratio from 0.8 to 0.95, and significantly reduce transaction finality time. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Pruning is a major research field in neural networks, enhancing their efficiency and generalization. The field of pruning approaches in genetic programming (GP) is continually evolving, with researchers actively exploring new techniques and approaches to optimise the performance of GP models. This research introduces a novel pruning algorithm for Genetic Programming-based Symbolic Regression (GPSR). The proposed method employs a weighting mechanism to identify and filter out unimportant subtrees in each generation. To achieve this, the method arranges all subtrees linearly and assigns weights to each subtree and terminal. It then uses Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) to optimize these weights, enabling the identification of unimportant subtrees and terminals for effective pruning. The algorithm’s effectiveness was evaluated using ten regression datasets, including high-dimensional and complex feature sets. Furthermore, comparisons were made with two other algorithms to evaluate its performance. The results indicate that the proposed approach not only achieves better learning and generalisation performance but also generates smaller trees compared to standard GP, thereby improving interpretability. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
