This paper presents a modularized high frequency high power 3-level neutral point clamped power electronics building block (PEBB) for renewable energy system. Three-level diode neutral point clamped (NPC) and 3-level active NPC are most popular topologies used in industrial applications based on modularized building block. However, since the single 3-level diode NPC or active NPC cell is unable to form a 3-level DC-DC chopper, the applications of PEBB cells based on these two circuits are limited where a DC-DC chopper is needed. In this paper, loss analysis for the 3-level chopper built by two 3-level diode NPC cells or active NPC cells are conducted. Switching loops in PEBB cells are identified, and double pulse tests are conducted for turn on and turn off transient of the switching loops. Based on double pulse tests, the switching losses will be quantified for different switching loops. Two 3-level bi-directional chopper circuits based on the active NPC PEBB cells are presented and compared. Then the modified PEBB cell derived from single active NPC cell is proposed for 3-level bi-directional chopper. Based on a common active NPC PEBB cell, the power converter can be built with modularized structure to achieve high frequency, high efficiency and low cost.

The intensity of fluorescence spectral lines of Rb atoms in the region of 350-1110nm is measured in eletrodeless discharge lamp. The population ratio between the excited states is calculated according to the spontaneous transition probabilities with rate equations. At the same time, the population density of energy level is also obtained. The results provide the potential applications of electrodeless discharge lamp in atomic filter and optical frequency reference at higher excited states without a pumping laser.

This paper describes a system developed to assist in model-based training of minimally invasive, laparoscopic procedures. The key factor motivating the development of the device called CAST (computer-Assisted Surgical Trainer) is the need to improve the state-of-the-art in teaching laparoscopy, and ultimately achieve better surgical outcomes. CAST's design concept and architecture is presented with its major elements that facilitate guided (both haptic and visual) execution of tasks, performance assessment, and comparative analysis of results. Both software and hardware models and implementations are given. The system, while currently intended for off-line, laboratory use, has an excellent potential for real-time assistive functions in the operating room.

As one of key technologies in photovoltaic converter control, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) methods can keep the power conversion efficiency as high as nearly 99% under the uniform solar irradiance condition. However, these methods may fail when shading conditions occur and the power loss can over as much as 70% due to the multiple maxima in I – P curve in shading conditions v.s. single maximum point in uniformly solar irradiance. In this paper, a Real Maximum Power Point Tracking (RMPPT) strategy under Partially Shaded Conditions (PSCs) is introduced to deal with this kind of problems. An optimization problem, based on a predictive model which will change adaptively with environment, is developed to tracking the global maxima and corresponding adaptive control strategy is presented. No additional circuits are required to obtain the environment uncertainties. Finally, simulations show the effectiveness of proposed method.

A 10.5-GHz divide-by-3 (1/3) injection-locked frequency divider (ILFD) with an internal Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) that can provide extra locking range is presented. A phase tuner implemented on an asymmetric inductor is proposed to increase the locking range through even-harmonic phase tuning in addition to those achieved by other techniques. With a fixed internal injection signal power of only − 18 dBm, a 25% enhancement in the locking range from 12 to 15 MHz is achieved with the proposed phase tuning. The integrated 1/3 ILFD has a frequency tuning range of 3.3 – 4.2 GHz. It is realized in a 0.18-µm BiCMOS process, occupies 0.6 mm × 0.7 mm, and consumes 10.6 mA while the ILFD alone consumes 6.15 mA from 1.8-V supply.

In this paper, we consider the control of large-scale processes with both input and state couplings. A distributed model predictive control(MPC) strategy for tracking based on the reference trajectories is presented. The proposed distributed MPC strategy requires decomposing a large-scale system into several smaller ones and solving convex optimization problems independently. Distributed MPC tracking strategies for unconstrained and constrained processes are presented, respectively. An iterative algorithm is presented to coordinate the distributed MPC controllers. The proposed algorithm is applied to a four-tank process to demonstrate the effectiveness.

This paper addresses the problem of infinite time performance of model predictive controllers applied to constrained nonlinear systems. The total performance is compared with a finite horizon optimal cost to reveal performance limits of closed-loop model predictive control systems. Based on the Principle of Optimality, an upper and a lower bound of the ratio between the total performance and the finite horizon optimal cost are obtained explicitly expressed by the optimization horizon. The results also illustrate, from viewpoint of performance, how model predictive controllers approaches to infinite optimal controllers as the optimization horizon increases.

An evident correlation between the high injection and the efficiency droop is demonstrated in GaInN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for temperature ranging from 80K to 450K. For this temperature range, the efficiency droop has the same thermal tendency with the high injection, i.e. the onset shifts to lower voltage and higher current with increasing temperature. The voltage difference between two onsets mainly falls on the resistive p-type region and induces strong electric field to enable electron drift leakage and the resulting efficiency droop.
