Bit-serial architectures offer a number of attractive features over their bit-parallel counterparts such as smaller area cost, lower density interconnection, a reduced number of pins, higher clock frequency, simpler routing and etc. These attractive features make them suitable for using in VLSI design and reduce overall production cost. In this paper, we propose the first least significant bit (LSB) bit-serial sum of absolute difference (SAD) hardware accelerator for integer variable block size motion estimation (VBSME) of H.264. This hardware accelerator is based on a previous state-of-art bit-parallel architecture namely propagate partial SAD. In order to reduce area cost and improve throughput, pixel truncation technique is adopted. Due to the bit-serial pipeline architecture and using small processing elements, our architecture works at much higher clock frequency (at least 4 times) and reduces area cost about 32% compared with its bit-parallel counterpart. The proposed hardware accelerator can be used in different disciplines from low bit rate to high bit rate by making a tradeoff between the degree of parallelism or using fast algorithm or a combination of both.

The paper deals with the non destructive monitoring of civil engineering structures by using the time frequency representation. In particular the Acoustic Emission (AE) of the cracks that can occur inside structures can be evaluated for the study of damage growth. This analysis requires high sampling frequency and long time of observation. Therefore the proposed solution consists of two phases. The first one concerns the acquisition of the AE, the second one deals with the analysis of the acquired data by the Time Frequency Representations. The latter phase allows the identification of the frequencies connected to disaster events like the structural subsidence. The test validation in order to asses the effectiveness of the acquiring system set up is performed according with the standard for the AE in the concrete structures.

Performance Analysis of the D-STTD Communication system with AMC Scheme

In this paper, we propose a Double-Space Time Transmit Diversity (D-STTD) communication system with Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) scheme and analyze its performance using simulation experiments. The simulation results show that the probability of selecting a high Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) level increased as the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) improved. Furthermore, the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme provided a more uniform throughput distribution throughout the entire SNR range compared to its counterpart which did not apply AMC scheme. Also, the maximum throughput of the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme was twice that of a conventional AMC communication system or a Space Time Transmit Diversity (STTD) communication system with AMC scheme.

Traditional electric machine design requiring the balancing of the phases both in phase voltage magnitudes and the angles between adjacent phases informs that the number of stator slots per phase must be an integer. There are situations however, where it is cheaper to use existing laminations for designs with non-integer number of slots per phase to build generators for specialized applications especially for DC power. In such cases a multi-phase design ensures a measure of fault tolerance and the unbalances in the phase angles between the winding phases have little effect on the quality of the output DC voltage. The methodology for the design of a five phase, 4-pole interior permanent magnet (IPM) generator using 36 slots as a source of DC power is outlined. Experimental results for the operation under healthy and faulty conditions (one and two phase windings open) are presented for verification of fault tolerance of multi-phase machines.

Ultrasound energy at frequency lower than 200 kHz has been used recently in medical field for transdermal drug transport and therapy with experimental results better than high frequency ultrasound at few MHz. As a consequence, the low frequency ultrasounds are gained more interest in the medical field. In the paper we review the most promising application of low frequency ultrasounds with emphasis on technology transducers and measurements. Furthermore, we propose a piezopolymer transducer, originally aimed to emulate the bat bio-sonar, that has low acoustic impedance to match biological tissue. It is light, small and low cost and could be used for medical application.

This paper presents a hardware-efficient autocorrelation scheme for the synchronization of MIMO-OFDM based wireless local area network (WLAN) systems, such as IEEE 802.11n. Carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation for the frequency synchronization requires high complexity autocorrelation operations of many training symbols. In order to reduce the hardware complexity of the MIMO-OFDM synchronization, we propose an efficient correlation scheme based on time-multiplexing technique and the use of reduced samples while preserving the performance. Compared to a conventional architecture, the proposed architecture requires only 27% logic gates and 22% power consumption with acceptable BER performance loss.

In this paper, we propose a low-complexity carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation algorithm for OFDM based wireless LAN, IEEE 802.11a. The complexity of the arctangent operation to calculate the argument of auto-correlation for CFO estimation is reduced by a novel range pointer method. The proposed algorithm estimates fine CFO value first and then based on the fine CFO value, simple criteria is used for the boundary decision of integer CFO estimation. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is slightly better than the conventional method while the computational complexity is reduced by 50%. Furthermore, the proposed method can be easily implemented for the low complex next generation MIMO-OFDM based WLAN systems.

In order to equip mobile robots for the measurement of distances in unstructured environments, we employed wide-band ultrasound transducers, based on ferroelectric polymer technology, to simulate the function of bio-sonar, according to strategies observed in the flight of bats. A complete electronic system was appropriately designed, which proved to be more efficient than the first prototype, having reduced dimensions, weight, power consumption and boasting easy assembly onto mobile robots. Different techniques for distance measurement are discussed and compared with results reported in literature, emphasizing the advantages of the polymer transducer in terms of versatility, efficiency, and work modalities. The Web Publishing Tool implemented the remote control features in LabView to manage and modify the signal parameters during testing and acquire data.

This paper presents the models of a five-phase interior permanent magnet machine (IPM) feeding a rectifier resistive load. The model predicts the performance of a machine with a non-integer number of stator slots per pole. Using the stationary and rotor reference frames, the approximate diode switching functions are derived. Then harmonic balance technique is used to obtain the steady state average and ripple models for the prediction of the system's performance. The steady state model helps in determining the equivalent AC resistive load across the five-phase generator output capacitor bank. The obtained results reveal that despite the imbalance of the stator windings, the machine is still able to produce near balanced voltages at normal operation, and also the fraction of the rated output power with very little harmonic components in the output load voltage when a rectifier leg is open.

A method for obtaining natural variable model of induction machines (IM) is presented. The variables of the model are electromagnetic torque (T e ), reactive torque (T r ), magnitude of rotor flux linkage (lambda r ), magnitude of stator flux linkage (lambda s ), and rotor speed (omega r ). These variables do not change in any reference frame of transformation. The model obtained is expressed in a state-space form with the natural variables as state variables. Simulation is carried out and the results are compared with a conventional induction machine simulation technique. Simulation results show the efficacy of this model in predicting electrical behavior of induction machines. Flux linkage orientation is done to facilitate the simulation, which is similar to method of alignment in vector control.
