The proposed sensor interface minimizes the optical detection system size while maximizing its overall efficiency (both power and sensitivity) of a multi-stage microfluidic cell sorter system. The proposed SigmaDelta sensor interface achieves at least one order of magnitude higher sensitivity while consuming less power (2mW) as compared to the traditional operational amplifier based transimpedance amplifier sensor interface. The proposed SigmaDelta sensor interface will be used to complete a full implementation of the developed multi-stage microfluidic system that would prove to be a great advancement in microfluidic cell sorting technology.

Entering the 21st century, the aging process and increasing chronic diseases in Taiwan society have become more prevalent. To deal with the problem, we develop a ubiquitous healthcare (u-Health) system platform that integrates wireless telecommunication, sensor network, and information technology to take care of patients having chronic diseases. The u-Health system provides not only telecare at home setting, but also a health community network which can further integrate medical care and life care and emphasize on patent humanity and dignity. For this purpose, a holistic u-Health system focusing on the physiological, psychosocial, arts, recreational, and even spiritual aspects of patients was implemented for people living in the community. In this study, we applied our community based u-Health system to the current and retired employees of National Taiwan University (NTU) who had at least one of the following chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity, and required long term follow up and treatment. A community medical group (CMG) which is formed with family doctors from the Family Medicine department of NTU Hospital, the Yung-Ho Branch of Cardinal Tien Hospital, NTU Health Center, and several other local clinics in Taipei City was in charge of the medical care along with a dedicated case managing nurse for the medical care at outpatient clinics, home telecare and 24-hour health consultation. Using this integrated community-based system is expected to provide a comprehensive and ubiquitous healthcare and eventually improve the quality of care by increasing compliance and reducing the complications of chronic diseases.

The problem of discovery association rules in large databases is considered. An encoding method for converting large databases to small one is proposed. Significant efficiency is obtained by applying some modified known algorithm on our proposed database layout. In addition, a new algorithm based on the proposed encoding method is introduced. Using some properties of numbers our database converts itemset to numerical domain. Our implementation indicates that the proposed layout made the size of database significantly smaller. Also the time to find association rules is reduced.

In this paper, a novel approach is presented for multimedia information hiding using visual cryptography. The approach combines both the steganographic and cryptographic effect to improve the quality of security of the data. The technique provides three levels of security without reducing the payload and the image quality. In order to attain even better quality, an enhancement technique is proposed. The experiments done on various images and the results obtained showed the robustness of the technique.

Scientists has largely understand the structure of glass and the ion trajectories has largely relied on statistical analysis of data collected from experimental measurement and computer simulation [1][2]. Invariably, the details of the structure-transport relationships in the data have been ignored in favour of ensemble average. In this works, we present a visual study of such relationships using surface-based visualisation techniques. In particular, we consider a simulated three-dimensional (3D) time-varying model of ion trajectories, and examine the spatio-temporal collaborative among mobile ions. Our goal is to devise effective visual representations to aid scientists especially biologists in identifying possible collaborative behaviours and their spatial and temporal association among complex and seemingly chaotic atom movements in ion trajectories. We propose a hybrid scheme that used 3D glyphs for orientation, colour scale and codeword for depicting the time and opacity with highlight and de-highlight factors for collaborative ion dynamic events. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a timing synchronization scheme of the next generation IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN standard which is based on MIMO-OFDM technique. The proposed timing synchronization method takes two steps which consist of two modified auto-correlators. For coarse timing synchronization, a sliding window differentiator is used after a conventional auto-correlation in order to avoid plateau problem. The conjugate symmetry property of L-LTS is used for fine timing synchronization. Since cross-correlation based methods are not required, the computational complexity and the number of multiplier can be reduced. In order to reduce the hardware complexity, we have used sign comparators (SC) instead of using multipliers. Based on simulation results, the proposed method outperforms a conventional method. The proposed scheme can be applied to IEEE 802.11n systems and can easily be expanded to frequency synchronization scheme. ©2008 IEEE.

Black-box terminal characterization models are constructed from "un-terminated" frequency response functions (FRF) measured at the converter terminals without requiring explicit knowledge of any of the converter parameters;however to some extent, these measurements are always coupled with the source and load dynamics which reduces the fidelity of the final models obtained. This paper analyzes this problem and proposes a methodology to obtain un-terminated FRFs for dc-dc converters in the presence of source and load coupled FRF measurements. Furthermore, it presents a model order reduction technique to enable the simulation of dc distributed power systems with a large number of converters, applied to the calculated un-terminated FRFs that constitute the black-box models in question. Experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis and the high accuracy obtained with the black-box models built.

The problem of vehicle detection and segmentation in outdoor scenes is tackled. Vehicle shadows pose problems in vehicle segmentation step. In this paper, it is proposed to employ temporal edge density information as prior knowledge to distinguish moving vehicle from moving shadow and background in a traffic surveillance system. Experimental results showed good moving vehicle segmentation performance. The proposed approach is currently limited to free-flowing traffic scenes.

In multiview video coding, the consideration to send a depth map or not is an important issue. If view-synthesis is operated in the decoder part, a depth map of reasonable resolution is needed. Otherwise, the transmission of a depth map is overhead. Scalability of the depth map is a solution to meet this trade-off. In this paper, depth-scalability is adopted to multi-reference MVC. In multi-referencing, the warped view is added as a referencing picture in the current referencing scheme. The proposed scheme results in improved bitrate efficiency in lower layer depth coding in MVC. It is also shown that in the focus of inter-view synthesis in the decoder part, the bitrates are decreased by about 100-500 kbps in the 2nd and 1st layers, and the PSNR is decreased by about 1-3 dB. Therefore, application adaptive depth map scalable coding is an effective way to obtain coding gain.
