To improve the cycle life and efficiency of an energy storage system for HEV, a dynamic control system consisted of a switch between battery and ultracapacitor module and a controller is proposed, which is appropriate for mild hybrid vehicle with 42 V power net. The switch can be controlled based on the status of the battery and the ultracapacitor module, and a control algorithm that could largely decrease the number of high charging current peak is also implemented. Therefore the cycle life of the battery can be improved such that it is suitable for a mild hybrid vehicle with frequent engine start-stop and regenerative-braking. Also, by maximizing the use of the ultracapacitor, the system efficiency during high current charging and discharging operation is improved. Finally, this system has the effects that improves the efficiency of energy storage system and reduces the fuel consumption of a vehicle. To verify the validity of the proposed system, this paper presented cycles test results of different energy storage systems: a simple VRLA battery, hybrid energy pack (HEP, a VRLA battery in parallel with Ultracapacitor) and a HEP with a switch that controlled by energy management system (EMS). From the experimental result, it was proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Software maintenance is a very expensive activity in software life cycle. As in conventional systems, Web-based applications also needs a considerable cost of maintenance efforts and in general the more cost because of their inherent complex architecture. To estimate the maintainability cost of software, many software metrics have been proposed. This paper presents the result of an experimental study to explore the relationship between maintainability and some typical software metrics. We have collected time really spent for maintenance activity for Web-based applications. In the experimental study, we have found that for web-based systems, the existing metrics may not be indicators to maintenance effort on the contrary to conventional systems.

The focus of this paper is secondary-saliency decoupling in carrier signal injection-based sensorless control of AC machines using structured neural networks. Structured neural networks are utilized for automatic commissioning and decoupling of secondary saliencies including saturation-induced saliencies. Automatic commissioning process is necessary for easy implementation and for acceptance of the carrier signal injection-based sensorless control by drives industry. In comparison with classical compensation methods, such as lookup tables, this technique has advantages of reducing commissioning time and automating the process. These advantages are result of a physics-based design of structured neural networks, which is responsible for their scalability, and moderate size and complexity. In comparison with traditional neural networks, structured neural networks are simpler, physically insightful, less computationally intensive and easier to train.

It uses a directional coupler in front of an antenna to reduce transmitter carrier leakage at receiver front-end and to be integrated into mobile handset with a single antenna. It adapts a direct conversion transmitter and consists of low pass filter, variable gain amplifier, up-conversion mixer and drive amplifier. The transmitter supports both the single-side-band (SSB) and the double-side-band (DSB) modulation for the reader-to-tag communications. This IC consumes only 31mA in SSB mode and 27mA in DSB mode from a 1.8V power supply voltage to provide a 4dBm output power at drive amplifier. The measured LO leakage, output 1dB compression point and 3rd order output intercept point achieve 55dBc, 4.5dBm and 14.5dBm, respectively. © 2007 EuMA.

As the computer data storage capacity increases and technology of digital imaging progresses rapidly, today we can access and manipulate huge image database on the Internet. How to search and access intelligently on content based image database become an important focus in the field of multimedia research. In this study, a preliminary system of grid-distributed, contextual and semantic based, intelligent information access framework for medical images database was designed to integrate with radiology reports and clinical department information. A prototyping was established with a model of intelligent diagnostic and therapeutic decision support for brain degenerative diseases among radiologist and neurologist. Dementia was the first disease selected for implementation. In the future, the system will extend its spectrum of diseases and more clinical specialties.

During 1976–1977 academic years he taught as assistant professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering University of Iowa. Then Dr. Bien joined Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology summer 1977 and is now Professor of Control Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science KAIST. Dr. Bien was the president of the Korea Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Society during 1990–1995 and also the general chair of IFSA World Congress 1993 and for FUZZ-IEEE99 respectively. He is currently co-Editor-in-Chief for International Journal of Fuzzy Systems (IJFS) Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and a regional editor for the International Journal of Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing. He has been serving as Vice President for IFSA since 1997 and is now Chief Chairman of Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea and Director of Humanfriendly Welfare Robot System Research Center. His current research interests include intelligent control methods with emphasis on fuzzy logic systems service robotics and rehabilitation engineering and large-scale industrial control systems. Kwang-Hyun Park:received the B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from KAIST Korea in 1994 19997 and 2001 respectively. He is now a researcher at Human-friendly Welfare Robot System Research Center. His research interests include learning control machine learning human-friendly interfaces and service robotics.

It has been found that some huge overshoot in the sense of sup-norm may be observed when typical iterative learning control (ILC) algorithms are applied to LTI systems, even though monotone convergence in the sense of λ-norm is guaranteed. In this paper, a new ILC algorithm with adjustment of learning interval is proposed to resolve such an undesirable phenomenon, and it is shown that the output error can be monotonically converged to zero in the sense of sup-norm when the proposed ILC algorithm is applied. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Terahertz (THz) response spectra of GaN-based field-effect transistor (FET) arrays are calculated in a self-consistent electromagmetic approach. Two types of FET arrays are considered: (i) FET array with a common channel and a large-area grating gate, and (ii) array of FET units with separate channels and combined intrinsic source and drain contacts. It is shown that the coupling between plasmons and THz radiation in the FET array can be strongly enhanced as compared to a single-unit FET. The computer simulations show that the higher-order plasmon modes can be excited much more effectively in the array of FET units with separate channels and combined source and drain contacts then in FET array with a common channel and a large-area grating gate.
