This paper presents a total solution on EMG signal-based walking phase recognition for people with lower limb disability. Various environmental factors such as sensed location, walking speed, and ground inclination are taken into consideration in all the phases of signal sensing, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. Based on analysis on fourteen well-known feature extraction methods in varying environmental situation, this paper proposes a methodology for selecting a good feature set, and then demonstrates effectiveness of the proposed approach with the classification results.

Development of the telecommunications software systems is a highly demanding task. Beside requirements for high reliability, availability and very complex features, customers today demand new releases to be delivered in a very short time frames. Usual development projects are faced with significant problems and obstacles that in most cases result with long development cycles, high cost and poor quality of implemented solutions. The transition from traditional software development towards agile projects with frequent releases is not trivial and demand significant changes in all aspects of project organization. This work analyzes major obstacles in telecommunication software development and proposes a method for the use of common project retrospectives to improve telecommunications software development. Proposed method is applied and evaluated on the actual project to demonstrate all benefits that project retrospectives can bring to the telecommunications software development.

An embedded 8b RISC for advanced memories is designed to control, analyze and optimize the memory timing and voltage parameters. The processor-based built-in-self-optimize (BISO) algorithm is proposed to enhance the memory yield. A test PRAM with the RISC is fabricated in 90nm, 3-metal diode-switch process. By applying BISO, the PRAM margin window increases by 221%. It operates at 100MHz and consumes 28.4mW at 1.0V supply voltage. The embedded RISC enables 100Mb/s/pin read/write throughputs to PRAM.

In this paper, a new control scheme based on the utilization of the natural variables of the system is proposed for the three-phase three-level rectifier working under unbalanced conditions. The attractive advantage of this controller is the possibility of effective operation under both balanced and unbalanced voltage/line impedance conditions. Unity power factor operation is feasible when the system is balanced and a constant input power can be achieved in unbalanced situation. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller in both the rectifier mode and the inverter mode.

Correction data of SBAS are classified to three categories such as the fast correction, the long term correction and the ionospheric correction. To retrieve and process the correction data, this paper modifies the software GPS receiver designed by CSLAB. The designed receiver can process all kinds of SBAS signals: WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS and GAGAN by just changing software. The performance of the implemented GPS/SBAS receiver is evaluated using real WAAS satellite signal and MSAS satellites signals which are available in Korea

This paper presents an efficient image signal processing structure for CMOS image sensors to achieve low area and power consumption. Although CMOS image sensors;(CISs) have various benefits compared with charge-coupled devices (CCDs), the images obtained from CISs have much lower quality than those from CCDs. To improve the quality of CIS images, it is required to do reproducing and enhancing processings such as color interpolation, white balancing, color correction, gamma correction and color conversion. They are implemented individually in most conventional designs though they have similar functional characteristics. In this proposed structure, the gamma correction block is moved to the front in order to combine several image signal processings into one block. An efficient compensation scheme is also proposed to reduce the errors caused by the,moving of the non-linear gamma correction. A prototype CIS image signal processor is implemented in Verilog-HDL and synthesized with 0.18um standard cell library. Experimental results show that the proposed structure reduces area and power consumption by 2:3.8% and 31.1%, respectively. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a features extraction module for isolated handwritten Arabic characters. The collected core features are based on pixels orientations according to Freeman chain code. The input to this module is Arabic character (in its basic-shapes i.e. without diacritics). The features extractor module, fed with a skeleton of an isolated character basic-shape, yields global and local features. Feature vector of 12 elements are used. Two features are global while the remaining 10 elements are locals. Neural network classifier is used for aggregating the features for classification decision making.

This paper desires to explore the role of barcode technology in blood bank information systems via addressing its upgrade and the consequent impact. Firstly, it briefs the application and effect of barcode technology in blood donation and transfusion service. In the second, the barcode paradigms of Macau Codabar and ISBT 128 are carefully examined and compared in accordance with the procedure and specifications of barcode upgrade. Then, the impact due to upgrade is assessed from the perspectives of blood bank information system, blood banks, and even blood donation and transfusion service. It finally discusses the considerations on implementing the upgrade of barcode technology in blood bank information systems. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

This paper presents a closed-loop, position control system, using two interconnected, DC solenoids in a pull-pull arrangement, and controlled by an Allen-Bradley, MicroLogix 1500 LRP, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). This PLC, and similar equipment possessing A/D and D/A modules, are excellent vehicles for teaching closed-loop control, since they are easy to program and do not require a substantial background in programming. This feature makes it very attractive since our control classes and laboratories are populated by students from mechanical, manufacturing and electronic backgrounds. In addition, this particular PLC has built-in data acquisition capabilities, making it ideal for comparing theoretical responses (obtained by simulating a SIMULINK-based model) with that of the actual hardware. Further, PLCs are extremely common in industrial and manufacturing environments, and the student's familiarity with them can serve as an added bonus in seeking employment. This paper presents the modeling, parameter estimation, and simulation procedures. The setup can also be easily modified so that it is controlled by other types of controllers (microcontroller-based, PC-based controllers such as Lab VIEW. This set-up can also be used by graduate students to investigate second-order-type effects. This hardware has been effective in enhancing student understanding and retention of control system theory. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Energy efficiency of cache memories is crucial in designing embedded processors. Reducing energy consumption in the instruction cache is especially important, since the instruction cache consumes a significant portion of total processor energy. This paper proposes a new instruction cache architecture, named Partitioned Instruction Cache (PI-Cache), for reducing dynamic energy consumption in the instruction cache by partitioning it to smaller (less power-consuming) sub-caches. When the proposed PI-Cache is accessed, only one sub-cache is accessed by utilizing the temporal/spatial locality of applications. In the meantime, other sub-caches are not accessed, leading to dynamic energy reduction. The PI-Cache also reduces dynamic energy consumption by eliminating the energy consumed in tag lookup and comparison. Moreover, the performance gap between the conventional instruction cache and the proposed PI-Cache becomes little when the physical cache access time is considered. We evaluated the energy efficiency by running a cycle accurate simulator. SimpleScalar, with power parameters obtained from CACTI. Simulation results show that the PI-Cache improves the energy-delay product by 20%-54% compared to the conventional direct-mapped instruction cache.
