Barcode technology has been widely employed in medicine and healthcare industry. In this paper, it firstly introduces the application of barcode technology in information automation system oriented to blood banks and other transfusion facilities. In the following, the label paradigm of Codabar in Macao Blood Transfusion Center (CTS-Macau) is examined through the comparison with ISBT 128, an international barcode and labeling standard for blood and blood products. And then, it tries to exemplify the supersedure of Codabar by ISBT 128 via the implementation of barcode labeling system at CTS-Macau. This paper is intended to serve as a reference of implementing barcode technology in blood bank automation system. ©2005 IEEE.

A new point-to-point cascade bus architecture and pseudo-differential current signaling present, which is called WiseBus™. The proposed transmitter using capacitive coupling error cancellation and fast cut-off scheme compensates an inherent charge error and duty error of output current. The receiver makes high common noise rejection between reference and data using perfectly matched gain-enhanced regulated cascode buffer. The advantage of proposed interface is very low power consumption and low EMI using small current signal(±100μA) and small signal loop area, and it is suitable for large size LCD TV due to point-to-point cascade bus configuration.

Due to the powerful error correcting performance, turbo codes have been adopted in many wireless communication standards. Although several low-power techniques have been proposed, power consumption is still a major issue to be solved in practical implementations. Since turbo decoding is classified as a memory-intensive algorithm, reducing memory accesses is crucial to achieve a low power design. To reduce the number of memory accesses for maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding, this paper proposes an approximate reverse calculation of backward metrics which can be implemented with simple computational complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed method applied to W-CDMA standard reduces the access rate of the backward metric memory by 90% without degrading error correcting performance. A prototype turbo decoder based on the proposed reverse calculation achieves 30% power reduction compared to the conventional decoder. © 2005 IEEE.

There have been various secure routing protocols proposed for mobile ad hoc networks. Most of these protocols are analyzed by two standard techniques: simulation and security analysis. There has been a lack of work related to the performance of secure routing protocols in real network testbed. In this paper, we present quantitative results for the performance comparisons between AODV and SAODV routing protocols by using a small-scale experimental testbed, which consists of 10 laptops within a 250 m by 100 m rugby field. Apart from outdoor testing, we also compare the results with those obtained via simulation and indoor emulation. The workload includes both UDP and TCP traffic. Results show that SAODV is effective in preventing routing message tampering and data dropping attacks. For outdoor experiments, we also estimate the average distance within a communication gray zone under different bit rates. Copyright 2005 ACM.

In this paper, the queueing performance of an adaptive type-I hybrid automatic repeat request(ARQ) with a generalized Markovian source is studied for a TDMA/TDD system over a Markovian channel. In the adaptive type-I hybrid ARQ of our interest, the payload size for information in a packet(or ARQ block) and the coding rate of ARQ block vary, according to the channel state, e.g., high coding rate and small payload size for information in a bad state of channel. We assume that an arriving message over a medium access control(MAC) layer consists of a number of information units of fixed size. We analyze the delay of a message, which is composed of its queueing delay and its transmission time, and the message dropping probability. In the numerical examples, we have shown that the correlation of either traffic source or radio channel affects the queueing performance in a similar way, due to its Markovian structure. The analytical work presented here can be used to control physical parameters, such as coding rate, in order to meet QoS requirements in a higher layer which is over the MAC layer. © 2005 IEEE.

Pedestrian crossings are oangerous places for a visually impaired person to cross safely. This paper describes a simple method for the detection of the location of a pedestrian crossing as well as measurement of its length to enhance the safety and mobility of blind people while crossing a road. A crossing is characterized by zebra pattern i.e. by evenly spaced white stripes on a usual black road surface. Detection of the crossing location as well as measurement of its length is done using this criterion from the image captured by a single camera. The method at first checks for the existence of a crossing;if there exists a crossing then it goes to measure the crossing length. Experimental results on a large number of street scenes with and without crossings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique. © 2005 IEEE.

Nowadays the multimedia tools have an important role in both the management of the lectures and the organization of the course program on instrumentation and measurement. The paper presents the design of a wide-band active-RC filter with a fast tuning circuit for wireless communication receiver applications. The filter topology is the 5th-order Chebyshev-II lowpass filter type and the programmable bandwidth can be extended up to 10MHz while the stopband attenuation larger than 40dB is obtained. The Successive Approximation Register (SAR) scheme is incorporated for a prompt on-chip tuning operation that should be needed for compensating RC variations. The filter is fabricated in a 0.18-μm standard digital CMOS technology and dissipates 20.7mW for a supply voltage of 1.8V. The measured 3rd-order harmonic input intercept point (IIP3) is larger than 32dBm. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate a queueing performance of an adaptive Type-I hybrid-Automatic Repeat re-Quest(ARQ) scheme in a TDMA system over a Markovian channel. In the system, we assume that an arriving message of variable size over a medium access control(MAC) layer consists of a number of information units of fixed size. It is fragmented in a MAC/LLC layer according to the payload size of ARQ block of fixed size and transmitted. The payload size of ARQ block varies in accordance with each channel state in order to increase the packet transmission success probability. The system of interest is modelled as bulk arrival and modulated bulk service in an infinite buffer and solved by a generating function approach. From the queueing analysis, we obtain the message delay, which is its queueing delay plus the time to transmit the entire message, by inverting the generating function. In the numerical examples, the queueing performance of a non-adaptive hybrid type-I and adaptive one is compared. The adaptive one maintains its queueing performance over a wide range of bit error rate(BER) while that of non-adaptive one is highly sensitive to BER. In addition, a slowly-varying channel shows worse queueing performance, because the channel whose bad state shows low BER and long period causes higher queueing delay than the channel with counterpart parameters. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, the queueing performance of a type-II hybrid ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) scheme in a TDMA system over a Markovian channel is analyzed by assuming infinite queue size. The system of interest can be described by an embedded Markov chain of M/G/1 type, which can be solved by a well-known matrix analytic method of M/G/1 type. In the numerical examples, the mean delay and the packet dropping probability obtained using the infinite queue assumption are examined under varying the mobile velocity, average received signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and coding rate. © 2005 IEEE.
