A maximum-likelihood channel estimator for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication environments, in presence of interference is discussed here. We study a training based scenario, where the channel is estimated based on pilots that precede the transmission of the information. To reduce the number of estimation parameters, we estimate the channel iteratively in timedomain. Since interference from other users provides no useful information we do not estimate parameters of the interference and neither we neglect the affect of the interference instead interference along with Gaussian noise is perceived as non-Gaussian noise. The algorithm assumes no apriori knowledge about the interfering channel and signal at the receiver, further no-assumption on the statistical properties of the interferer is assumed which makes this algorithm robust. The estimated channel information along with the estimated distribution are then utilized to equalize the subsequent data blocks.

Pedestrian crossings are dangerous places for a visually impaired person to cross safely. This paper describes a simple method for the detection of the location of a pedestrian crossing as well as measurement of its length to enhance the safety and mobility of blind people while crossing a road. A crossing is characterized by zebra pattern i.e. by evenly spaced white stripes on a usual black road surface. Detection of the crossing location as well as measurement of its length is done using this criterion from the image captured by a single camera. The method at first checks for the existence of a crossing; if there exists a crossing then it goes to measure the crossing length. Experimental results on a large number of street scenes with and without crossings demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

In this paper, we discuss efficient coding and design styles using Verilog from synthesis point of view. These techniques can be greatly helpful for any digital designer writing designs having speed and area considerations in his mind. Different important techniques have been addressed to enable the designer to write synthesizable codes. Apart from the synthesis, techniques are also discussed to improve the speed and area of netlist generated from the RTL codes. The prominent problem faced by the designer related to synthesis of Division and Modulus operator in FPGA has been discussed and an efficient solution has been provided.

The large diffusion of the distributed measurement systems (DMS) aims to providing innovative solutions to different situations which appear for both industrial and educational applications. Consequently, advanced hardware platforms and innovative software architectures are demanded. In these situations, the development of novel approaches in software and hardware tools for DMS has fundamental importance. The paper provides an overview of the hardware and software architectures which are currently used to develop DMSs, focusing on advanced topics concerning the DMS management. In particular, the workload, the synchronization and the communication delay aspects are taken into account.

A projective image registration algorithm, oriented to consumer devices, is proposed. It exploits a "multi-resolution feature based method" for estimating the projective parameters through a 2D Daubechies discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The algorithm has been fully tested with real image sequences acquired by CMOS sensors and compared to other registration techniques. The obtained results highlight the accuracy of the registration parameters.

Due to their powerful error correcting performance, turbo codes have been adopted in many wireless communication standards. Although several low-power techniques have been proposed, power consumption is still a major issue to be solved in practical implementations. Since turbo decoding is classified as a memory-intensive algorithm, reducing memory accesses is crucial to achieve a low power design. To reduce the number of memory accesses for maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding, this paper proposes an approximate reverse calculation of backward metrics which can be implemented with simple computational complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed method, applied to the W-CDMA standard, reduces the access rate of the backward metric memory by 90% without degrading error correcting performance. A prototype turbo decoder based on the proposed reverse calculation achieves 30% power reduction compared to the conventional decoder.

In this paper, the queueing performance of an adaptive type-I hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) with a generalized Markovian source is studied for a TDMA/TDD system over a Markovian channel. In the adaptive type-I hybrid ARQ of our interest, the pay load size for information in a packet (or ARQ block) and the coding rate of ARQ block vary, according to the channel state, e.g., high coding rate and small payload size for information in a bad state of channel. We assume that an arriving message over a medium access control (MAC) layer consists of a number of information units of fixed size. We analyze the delay of a message, which is composed of its queueing delay and its transmission time, and the message dropping probability. In the numerical examples, we have shown that the correlation of either traffic source or radio channel affects the queueing performance in a similar way, due to its Markovian structure. The analytical work presented here can be used to control physical parameters, such as coding rate, in order to meet QoS requirements in a higher layer which is over the MAC layer

The neutral-point voltage of the three-level, three-phase converter is regulated using a hysteresis controller which selects the appropriate expression for the zero sequence voltage signal which augments the modulation signal used in the discontinuous carrier-based PWM modulation scheme for voltage control. The analytical expressions for the zero sequence voltages are generalized to three sets making its DSP implementation very easy. Simulation and experimental results verify the usefulness of the proposed neutral-point regulation technique

Nonlinear input-output linearization with decoupling concepts are used to effect a high performance speed control of the interior permanent magnet motor drives which also achieves the minimization of the electrical losses - the copper and core losses. This control scheme is unique in that saturation dependent parameters such as the d and q axis inductances and the voltage dependent core loss resistance are all included in the controller structure formulation and implementation. The proposed control scheme differs from known schemes which are either based on perturbation and search methods or on steady state fitted graphs that map the command q and d axis currents based on reference torques. Here, an optimization formulation that dynamically determines the reference currents/voltages required to achieve high performance speed control and total electrical loss minimization is used. The control structure methodology, the nature of the variations of the machine parameters and how they influence the machine efficiency and performance are clearly laid out in experimental and computer simulation results

Three-phase, four leg voltage source converters by virtue of the fourth leg connected to the neutral points of the wye-connected loads effectively handle the zero sequence currents and voltages occasioned by load impedance imbalances and/or nonlinearity of loads. This paper outlines a generalized carrier-based pulse-width modulation scheme for this converter which with a natural reference frame control scheme directly controlling the actual load currents ensure current regulation irrespectively of the nature of the load. The controller structure and design are discussed explicitly with attention paid to considerations leading to the selection of the controller parameters yielding satisfactory location of system poles and zeros. The proposed modulation and control schemes are effectively validated by computer simulation and experimental results for the converter operation in the linear and overmodulation regions
