In this paper, we present an Object-Oriented Air Defense Simulation system, called ADSim, for simulating modern day combat dynamics of air defense simulation involving multiple targets and multiple platforms. ADSim has been developed on the basis of a new approach to object-oriented modeling which integrates Conceptual Model of Mission Space(CMMS) and Unified Software Development Process(USDP). We shall show that CMMS based description of simulation domain can be systematically translated to build an object-oriented simulation, and CMMS common representation templates can be effectively used to design and implement scenario based military specification. Moreover, the separation of the relatively static simulation architecture from the evolvable problem domain modeling for specific application scenario provides users with modularity and extensibility by encapsulating the sequencing information derived from the domain modeling as a part of the simulation architecture. ADSim system architecture consists of a pre-processor for battle scenario definition and simulation data set up, a main processor for triggering battle field events and advancing simulation time, and a post processor to record simulation history. ADSim is developed in the evolutionary software life cycle approach, and implemented in C++. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

The estimation of characteristics from the impact perforation process of the material by the high-speed photograph system has been studied. In this method, the characteristic of the material is estimated from the continuous images after the steel ball perforates into the material specimen. In this study, we propose to use the neural network to localize the steel ball in the continuous images.

ESD and EMI problems and their possible solutions are addressed for the multi-layer power distribution network of high-speed digital systems. To prevent system from ESD damage, split I/O port ground with stitching element such as conductor or inductor is proposed, while stitching and decoupling capacitors are proved to be very effective for reducing electromagnetic radiation from the split power plane. Simulations based on 3D-finite difference time domain (FDTD) method are utilized for the analysis of practical high frequency multi-layered PC mainboard.

We present a pre-distorter model derived from a modified semiconductor user model that reduces the nonlinear distortion in directly modulated semiconductor lasers. Simulation results showing improvements greater than 40dB for the second harmonic and the second and third order intermodulation distortion components over a wide frequency range are given. Performance and capability of the pre-distorter are examined for two different lasers (Ortel 1510B and Fujitsu FLD3F7CZ) under different operating conditions

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) attempts to attain higher processor utilization by allowing instructions from multiple independent threads to coexist in a processor and compete for shared resources. Previous studies have shown, however, that its throughput may be limited by the number of threads. A reason is that a fixed thread scheduling policy cannot be optimal for the varying mixes of threads it may face in an SMT processor. Our adaptive dynamic thread scheduling (ADTS) was previously proposed to achieve higher utilization by allowing a detector thread to make use of wasted pipeline slots with nominal hardware and software costs. The detector thread adaptively switches between various fetch policies. Our previous study showed that a single fixed thread scheduling policy presents much room (some 30%) for improvement compared to an oracle-scheduled case. In this paper, we take a closer look at ADTS. We implemented the functional model of the ADTS and its software architecture to evaluate various heuristics for determining a better fetch policy for a next scheduling quantum. We report that performance could be improved by as much as 25%.

Western Japan 60 Hz power system is a longitudinal power system which consists of interconnected six major electric power companies. Though the power system has some interesting oscillation characteristics, there were few researches based on observation as a whole system. Authors have constructed an online global monitoring system of the power system dynamics, which is based on multiple synchronized phasor measurement technique using time stamp of the Global Positioning system (GPS) and Internet. This paper presents some results of observing system frequency oscillation and discussed the difference among the measured point. system dynamics due to the load frequency control (LFC) can be extracted from observed frequency oscillations by time-frequency analysis based on the Wavelet transform. Because variations of phase difference between the interconnected two areas are closely related with tie line power flow variations, relations between the frequency oscillations and the LFC are also investigated.

Evaluating the coexistence between wireless local area networks and wireless personnel area networks is an important issue for determining usage policies for wireless devices that are collocated and sharing the same frequency spectrum. A method is presented for evaluating the impact Bluetooth piconets will have on IEEE 802.11b performance when collocated within a specific building layout. The method is centered on analytically evaluating the probability of collision between an 802.11b packet and packets from Bluetooth piconets. The analytical model is based on a parametric representation of the Bluetooth interference environment and a site specific propagation model used to estimate the received signal powers.

A novel frequency domain Doppler diversity technique for OFDM systems is proposed. The received OFDM signal is first frequency shifted to generate various diversity branches. After demodulation, branch outputs are individually weighted and added together. For Doppler spread signal, it alters fading statistics and improves the bit error rate. Extensive simulations show that combining three diversity branches with proper frequency shifts reduces BER by an order when the normalized Doppler spread is larger than 0.3.
