We present a scalable run-time configurable and programmable signal processing architecture for real-time applications which covers a wide performance spectrum. Our approach goes beyond conventional special purpose signal processing engines. Scalability has multiple dimensions: on core- and network-level. We base our novel architecture on programmable components which can be re-combined and re-configured to match application specific requirements for signal processing tasks at run-time. Users of the RIVER architecture can use our pre-synthesized cores to avoid HDL-coding and lengthy FPGA translation. For evaluation we have mapped computational- and memory-intensive kernels to the RIVER architecture and achieved 250 GMACs which is significantly (1.6-2x) more than many high-end DSPs provide.

This research proposes a scheme of area calculation system, focusing on image warping to top view. The sensor attached to camera is used to compensate the camera's orientation in real time. One constraint is that the calculated area is planar surface. In practice, the alignment of sensor and camera is imperfect. This error makes the calculated area size inaccurate. Therefore, calibration between camera and sensor is required by using Iterative Least Square method. Then, the extrinsic parameters derived from calibrated sensor and pre-computed intrinsic parameter will be used to generate a homography matrix. In top view image, we can directly count the number of target pixel. Finally, we will also find the relationship between rotation angle and size of each pixel in real-world unit with calculating percentage accuracy of this method. The experimental results show top view target area size generated from the tilted camera using information from the orientation sensor in real time. © 2012 IEEE.

To minimize Rate-Distortion (RD) cost in video coding, RD Optimization (RDO) technique is adopted, which also brings increasingly computational complexity in Motion Estimation (ME), multiple reference selection and mode decision. In this paper, a Gaussian model based adaptive RD cost prediction method is developed to jointly speed up multiple reference selection and inter-mode decision. Besides the ability of achieving good coding efficiency with much reduced computational power, our method is also with two major advantages. First, it can achieve robust performance, including computational complexity reduction and almost intact video quality, with a wide range of video sequences resolutions and even for various scene changes;second, it could be either individually used or combined with the other efficient mode decision algorithms, and in both cases, our method could achieve remarkable performance, which is revealed by exhaustive experimental results. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper aims to construct and analyze an original logical difference based on the quantitative approximation operators. According to the variable precision lower approximation operator and graded upper approximation operator, we first put forward the specific logical difference;the new concept makes the specific logical combination on precision and grade, and has the practical multiple quantitative meaning. Then, both the fundamental structure and properties are investigated and obtained for the logical difference. Furthermore, two algorithms, the regular and structural algorithms, are proposed and analyzed, and the structural algorithm has more advantages. Finally, an example is provided. The proposed concept partially extends the graded and classical approximation operators;thus, some properties are achieved correspondingly for these previous approximation operators. © 2012 IEEE.

Grade serves as a fundamental quantitative index, and the graded rough set model is a basic model. Thus, this paper aims to investigate an original logical difference in the graded rough set model. According to the specific logical requirement on the grade index, the logical difference is put forward based on the graded lower and upper approximation operators;the new concept has the practical logical quantitative meaning. Then, both the macroscopic essence and microscopic fundamental structure are obtained for the new concept. For calculation, two algorithms, the conventional and microscopic algorithms are proposed and analyzed emphatically, and we conclude that the microscopic algorithm has more advantages in time and space complexity. Finally, the logical difference and its algorithms are both illustrated by an example. © 2012 IEEE.

With the rapid development of service-oriented computing (SOC) and service-oriented architecture (SOA), the number of services is rapidly increasing. How to organize and manage services effectively in repositories to improve the efficiency of service discovery and composition is important. This paper proposes three categorization rules to classify services for a large scale repository to form a relational taxonomy. The service retrieve scope can be drastically narrowed by this taxonomy. Therefore, the efficiency of service discovery and service composition can be greatly improved. We evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed method and other related ones via a publicly available test set, ICEBE05. The experimental results validate the effectiveness and high efficiency of the proposed one. © 2012 IEEE.

Sensor nodes in wireless networks often use batteries as their source of energy, but replacing or recharging exhausted batteries in a deployed network can be difficult and costly. Therefore, prolonging battery life becomes a principal objective in the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). There is little published data that quantitatively analyze a sensor node's lifetime under different operating conditions. This paper presents several experiments to quantify the impact of key wireless sensor network design and environmental parameters on battery performance. Our testbed consists of MicaZ motes, commercial alkaline batteries, and a suite of techniques for measuring battery performance. We evaluate known parameters, such as communication distance, working channel and operating power that play key roles in battery performance. Through extensive real battery discharge measurements, we expect our results to serve as a quantitative basis for future research in designing and implementing battery-efficient sensing applications and protocols. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a three-dimensional Gabor feature extraction for pixel-based hyperspectral imagery classification using a memetic algorithm. The proposed algorithm named MGFE combines 3-D Gabor wavelet feature generation and feature selection together to capture the signal variances of hyperspectral imagery, thereby extracting the discriminative 3-D Gabor features for accurate classification. MGFE is characterized with a novel fitness evaluation function based on independent feature relevance and a pruning local search for eliminating redundant features. The experimental results on two real-world hyperspectral imagery datasets show that MGFE succeeds in obtaining significantly improved classification accuracy with parsimonious feature selection. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Masking in gate level could efficiently protect AES S-box out of power analysis attack. But there still exists a kind of attack, called glitch attack, to achieve the sensitive information from gate cell leakage. Some works had been done to resist against glitch attack, which carefully masked AND gate or used Wave Dynamic Differential Logic (WDDL) cell. In this paper, we propose an improved masked AND gate, in which the relationship between input masked values and masks is nonlinear. Usually, when converting S-box operations from GF(2 8) to GF(((22)2)2), all the necessary computations become XOR and AND operations. Therefore, to fully mask AES S-box is to substitute the unmasked XOR and AND operations with the proposed masked AND gate and protected XOR gate. Although the proposed masked AND gate take up one extra XOR gate than Trichina's design and Baek's design, it can resist against glitch attack without using specific gate cell, such as WDDL. © 2012 IEEE.

Recently, there is a new kinds of cryptographic algorithms are proposed to meet the requirements of "lightweight" applications. PRESENT is one of them, which is built based on 4-bit substitution transformation (S-box) and suitable for low cost hardware implementations. Usually, there needs two 4-bit S-boxes, Sp, ISp, for PRESENT encryption and decryption, in which ISp can be computed from Sp. Therefore, we proposed a unified architecture to supporting the operations of PRESENT encryption and decryption. There also exists a kind of power analysis attacks pose a serious threat on hardware based PRESENT. In order to resist against DPA, we proposed a new masking scheme for PRESENT, in which the nonlinear substitution needs to be carefully masked. In order to reduce the hardware resources for the proposed masking scheme, we reuse the masked Sp to generate masked ISp. The experimental results show that our proposed unified masked PRESENT takes up only one time larger than the unmasked existing design. But, it is obvious that our proposed design has the ability to defend against DPA. © 2012 IEEE.
