This work presents a method to detect the size and location of tumor in soft tissues using ultrasound. Quantitative ultrasound is utilized to allow an ultrasound signal to be sent from a transmitter to multiple receivers. This received signal is analyzed for echogenic and echolucent tumors to differentiate between the two along with non-tumor sample and also studied for the delay to determine the size/location of the tumor. The proposed system utilizes Low Transient Pulse (LTP) technique and is implemented using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Digital Signal Processor (DSP) technologies. In this co-design architecture, DSP carries out the analysis of received demodulated signal at a lower speed while FPGA runs at a higher one to generate LTP signal and demodulate bandpass ultrasonic signal. This work elaborates the implementation of Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) receiver on FPGA for the received signal from an ultrasound detector. LTP is applied to the tumor samples through the transmitter and the received signal at an ultrasonic receiver is passed through QAM to obtain different maxima that are then further used to compute the location and the size of the tumor using DSP. This dual platform co-design demonstrates a good application of a FPGA/DSP platform for the LTP generation and received signal processing. © 2011 IEEE.

In this work, for a wireless sensor network (WSN) of n randomly placed sensors with node density λ ∈ [1, n], we study the tradeoffs between the aggregation throughput and gathering efficiency. The gathering efficiency refers to the ratio of the number of the sensors whose data have been gathered to the total number of sensors. Specifically, we design two efficient aggregation schemes, called single-hop-length (SLH) scheme and multiple-hop-length (MLH) scheme. By novelly integrating these two schemes, we theoretically prove that our protocol achieves the optimal tradeoffs, and derive the optimal aggregation throughput depending on a given threshold value (lower bound) on gathering efficiency. Particularly, we show that under the MLH scheme, for a practically important set of symmetric functions called perfectly compressible functions, including the mean, max, or various kinds of indicator functions, etc., the data from Θ(n) sensors can be aggregated to the sink at the throughput of a constant order Θ(1), implying that our MLH scheme is indeed scalable. © 2011 IEEE.

Electroencephalogram evidence for mirror neuron activity during the observation of drawn hand motion

The present study used electroencephalography to examine mu rhythm suppression （a putative index of human mirror neuron system activation） at frontal sites （F3, Fz and F4）, central sites （C3, Cz and C4）, parietal sites （P3, Pz and P4） and occipital sites （O1 and O2）, while subjects observed real hand motion （real hand motion condition） and illustrative depictions of hand motion （drawn hand motion condition）. Experimental data revealed that mu rhythm suppression was exhibited in the mirror neuron system when subjects observed both real and drawn hand motion. Moreover, the mu rhythm recorded at the F3, Fz, F4, and Pz poles was significantly suppressed while observing both stimulus types, but no obvious mu suppression occurred at the O1, 02 and 03 poles. These results suggest that the observation of drawings of human hand actions can activate the human mirror neuron system. This evidence supports the hypothesis that the mirror neuron system may be involved in intransitively abstract action understanding.

Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) employs one control channel for safety-oriented applications and six service channels for non-safety commercial applications. However, most existing multichannel schemes require all neighboring vehicles periodically (e.g. every 100 milliseconds) tune to the control channel for a full update of safety-oriented data before they can switch to the service channels for non-safety services. The safety exchange interval increases with the increase of traffic density. Consequently, under high traffic densities, the service channels are often completely idle while the control channel is congested. We propose a RSU Assisted Multi-channel Coordination MAC (RAMC) protocol that fully utilizes all channels to provide simultaneous safety and non-safety communications. Within the radio range of a roadside unit (RSU), vehicles are free to tune to any service channel. The RSU monitors all the safety messages being transmitted in both the control and service channels. Periodically, the RSU broadcasts a consolidated traffic view report to all neighboring vehicles in all channels. Therefore, a vehicle can operate in a service channel as long as it needs to achieve high throughput for non-safety applications, while maintaining adequate and timely safety awareness. Our simulation results show that the proposed RAMC protocol consistently achieves very high percentage of non-safety usage, while maintaining high safety message delivery ratios in various traffic density conditions. A remote network monitoring model for large-scale materials manufacturing is proposed, including five modules: center control module, data collection and fault alarm module, graph drawing module and data storage module. The center control module not only interacts with users, but also controls the other four modules to work together in harmony. According to this monitoring model, a remote network monitoring platform is designed and realized. The user can interact with the control center module through an Internet browser, and the information about the monitored manufacturing machines and devices can be displayed by means of text, chart, graphic and sound, etc. Moreover, the details about the problems or faults from the monitored objects can be obtained in time. The experimental results indicate that the network monitoring platform can accurately get the information of the monitored objects, and users can conveniently get the online running state of those monitored objects.

An algorithm for generating home states of Petri nets

Home states are ground markings which can be reached from any other reachable markings of a Petri net. The existence of home states is a strong property, and it is not only of important theoretical research meaning, but also of great practical value. This paper presents an algorithm for generating home states. For any bounded Petri net, the algorithm can judge whether it contains home states or not, and obtain the set of all its home states. The correctness of the algorithm is proved, and its complexity is analyzed, the result shows that it is a polynomial-time algorithm, so it is effective. Meanwhile, we implemented the algorithm in the popular Petri net tool PIPE2, which can be used for experimental purposes. Then a number of conclusions about the relationships between home state and deadlock are given, which bring great convenience to judge deadlock and exert control pointedly. Deadlock control is an important research issue in automated manufacturing systems that have a high degree of resource sharing and concurrency. Since minimal siphons are closely tied with deadlocks in Petri net models, their efficient extraction is fundamentally important. The existing methods can rapidly extract one minimal siphon given a maximal unmarked siphon that is obtained by using a mixed integer programming approach. This paper for the first time presents an extraction algorithm that can efficiently extract all minimal ones. The idea is based on the generation and use of a subnet tree structure given the places in a maximal unmarked siphon. Several Petri net models of automated manufacturing systems are used to illustrate the proposed concepts and methods. © 2011 IEEE.

Some wafer fabrication processes are repeated processes, e.g. atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. For such processes, the wafers need to visit some processing modules for a number of times, which complicates the cycle time analysis. This paper studies the cycle time analysis problem for such processes. With a Petri net model, it is found that such processes contain local cycles involving only the revisiting PMs and global cycles involving both revisiting and non-revisiting PMs. The process switches between these two types of cycles such that the process never reaches a steady state. Based on this finding, the mechanism underlying such processes is revealed and analytical expressions are given for the calculation of their cycle time. Illustrative examples are presented to show the application of the proposed approach. © 2011 IEEE.
