Traffic Density Estimation by Distributed Proxy Model Learning for Internet of Vehicle

Autonomous driving has been significantly advanced in today’s society, which revolutionized daily routines and facilitated the development of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). A crucial aspect of this system is understanding traffic density to enable intelligent traffic management. With the rapid improvement in deep neural networks (DNNs), the accuracy of density estimation has markedly improved. However, there are two main issues that remain unsolved. First, current DNN-based models are excessively heavy, characterized by an overwhelming number of training parameters (millions or even billions) and substantial computational complexity, indicated by a high number of FLOPs. These requirements for storage and computation severely limit the practical application of these models, especially on edge devices with limited capacity and computational power. Second, despite the superior performance of DNN models, their effectiveness largely depends on the availability of large-scale data for training. Growing privacy concerns have made individuals increasingly hesitant to allow their data to be publicly used for model training, particularly in vehicle-related applications that might reveal personal movements, which leads to data isolation issues. In this article, we address these two problems at once with a systematic framework. Specifically, we introduce the proxy model distributed learning (PMDL) model for traffic density estimation. PMDL model is composed of two main components. First, we introduce a proxy model learning strategy that transfers fine-grained knowledge from a larger master model to a lightweight proxy model, i.e., a proxy model. Second, we design a distributed learning strategy that trains multiple proxy models with privacy-aware local data and seamlessly aggregates these models via a global parameter server. Heat stress, caused by a warming climate and the increasingly high milk-producing dairy cattle, is one of the major threats to the well-being of dairy cattle as well as the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of dairy farming around the world. Timely identification of cows under heat stress is crucial to improving animal welfare, preventing milk production losses, and preserving water and energy for *** paper presents a smart ear tag, named eTag, and an associated system that can read a passive microchip temperature sensor subcutaneously injected into the animal with minimal discomfort. It features a lightweight design using a single coil shared for microchip scanning and wireless charging. eTag is autonomously recharged by a wireless charger over the head during daily milking sessions, enabling perpetual operation without battery replacement after deployment. The real-world performance of the proposed system was examined intensively in a three-week deployment on seven lactating Holstein cows. We demonstrate that eTag can reliably collect accurate body temperature in real time while maintaining a positive energy flow. The deployment of eTag will enable the timely detection of heat stress and facilitate precision control of barn cooling systems. © 2023 ACM.

This article examines the development of a Digital Learning Ecosystem (DLE) for engineering education, supported by online learning, within the framework of Erasmus+ international educational projects. We hypothesize that a DLE can address the challenges posed by rapid technological changes associated with Industry 4.0 and digital transformation, thus transforming engineering education to meet modern industry needs. Building on the earlier Erasmus+ CybPhys project, which established a Sharing Modelling and Simulation Environment (SMSE) for digitalizing online technical courses, the DIGITRANS project aims to enhance this architecture to include remote laboratories through the Sharing Remote Experiment Environment (SREE) platform. The project involves acquiring hardware and open-source software for SREE and establishing two physical remote laboratories. A study conducted in spring 2023, using the Technology Acceptance Model framework, indicated positive student perceptions of SMSE, with students believing it would enhance learning outcomes and expressing intentions to use the platform frequently. The efficacy of the DLE in addressing technological advancement challenges will be further evaluated through post-ante assessments and feedback from prospective employers and stakeholders, focusing on the implementation of industry recommendations and the correlation between pre- and post-implementation survey responses from industry and academic experts. © 2024 IEEE.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), with high efficiency, low manpower costs, and flexible convenience, has attracted widespread attention in logistics. UAV trajectory planning is an essential component in this context. Genetic algorithm(GA) is an effective tool for solving complex route optimization problems. However, selecting the optimal combination of parameters for UAV path planning remains a challenging problem, especially in complex urban environments with numerous obstacles. This paper proposes a genetic algorithm-based UAV path planning approach(UAV_GA) that considers obstacle avoidance on a two-dimensional grid-based map. Furthermore, to investigate the general patterns in selecting parameters for GA in such problems, a comprehensive empirical study is conducted. The study analyzes the effects of population size, number of iterations, crossover, and mutation probabilities on algorithm performance. It aims to identify universal patterns for optimal parameter combinations and provide guidance for parameter selection in GA for UAV trajectory planning with obstacle avoidance. © 2023 ACM.

Chiplet-based systems have become prominent in large systems-on-Chips (SoCs) as a means to mitigate increasing design costs. However, the integration of multiple chiplets introduces new challenges in the interconnection network, potentially leading to deadlocks. In this paper, we propose an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) based design approach to address this issue. Our method considers various design factors for deadlock-free routing, such as topology, latency, load balancing, path diversity, and fault tolerance, applicable to both general-purpose chiplets and application-specific chiplets. It facilitates the determination of optimal turn restrictions for general-purpose chiplets or constructs optimal deadlock-free routing paths for application-specific chiplets if the communication patterns are known. The results demonstrate the capability of the method to find optimal solutions under various design considerations.

IoT-based remote control for robotic arm

Robotic arms can perform various tasks with high accuracy, efficiency, and safety, especially in hazardous environments. This paper presents four degrees of freedom robotic arm that can be controlled remotely by two methods: direct control via Wi-Fi and indirect control via internet. We have designed an embedded system that allows the user to manipulate the robotic arm by moving the robot hand in different directions. We have also developed two software applications for remote control: one using MIT inventor 2 tool for direct control, and another using a web-based interface for indirect control. The software applications enable the user to adjust the angles of the four servo motors that drive the robotic arm in both clockwise and counter – clockwise directions. We have conducted several experiments to demonstrate the feasibility and stability of our system under different scenarios. Our results show that our system can perform wireless control of the robotic arm effectively using various mobile devices such as phone, tablet, or computer such as laptop, personal computer. © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
