Three-dimensional (3D) integration offers greater device integration, reduced signal delay and reduced interconnect power. It also provides greater design flexibility by allowing heterogeneous integration. Stacked mesh 3D NoC architecture was proposed to take advantage of the intrinsic capability of reducing the wire length in 3D ICs. However, this architecture still exacerbates the on-chip power density and router cost. In this paper, we propose a novel hybridization scheme for inter-layer communication using efficient 5-input routers to enhance the overall system power, performance, and area characteristics of the existing Hybrid NoC-Bus 3D mesh architecture. By defining a rule for routing algorithms called LastZ, the proposed area-efficient architecture decreases the overall average hop count of a NoC-based system compared to the existing architectures. We further improve this design by proposing partial-LastZ-based 3D NoC-bus hybrid architecture to provide adaptivity for implementing congestion-aware and fault-tolerant inter-layer routing algorithms. Extensive quantitative experiments demonstrate up to 16% performance improvement compared to the full LastZ-based 3D NoC-bus hybrid architecture and around 20% area reduction compared to the typical hybrid NoC-Bus 3D mesh architecture.

We present an experimental study of a mechanically scanned profiling sonar for Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) obstacle detection and avoidance. We extract potential obstacles from echo returns and suggest a scanning strategy for sonar in this application. We demonstrate with simulations (driven by data collected in the field) the potential for an ASV to rely solely on sonar data to navigate and avoid obstacles in a lake and harbor environment.

This paper proposes a path planning algorithm and a velocity control algorithm for underwater gliders to persistently monitor a patch of ocean. The algorithms address a pressing need among ocean scientists to collect high-value data for studying ocean events of scientific and environmental interest, such as the occurrence of harmful algal blooms. The path planner optimizes a cost function that blends two competing factors: it maximizes the information value of the path, while minimizing the deviation from the path due to ocean currents. The speed control algorithm then optimizes the speed along the planned path so that higher resolution samples are collected in areas of higher information value. The resulting paths are closed circuits that can be repeatedly traversed to collect long term ocean data in dynamic environments. The algorithms were tested during sea trials on an underwater glider operating off the coast of southern California over the course of several weeks. The results show significant improvements in data resolution and path reliability compared to a sampling path that is typically used in the region.

Ubiquitous integration of high-speed WLANs with wide-range 3GPP systems results in the service extension of the backbone cellular network. This paper envisions such heterogeneous wireless network architecture by integrating IEEE 802.11p VANETs with 3GPP LTE to achieve seamless data connectivity for uninterrupted multimedia sessions amongst spatially-apart vehicular clusters. Issues on cluster head-based multicasting and QoS are explored in this paper. An adaptive multi-metric Cluster Head (CH) election mechanism is proposed to manage the VANET sub-clusters. In addition to this, construction of a 2-hop virtual overlay mesh-based shared multicast tree for lower-level multicasting within VANETs is discussed. Following this, the process of VANET-LTE upper-level communication is detailed, addressing the issues of CH and gateway handover, and resource allocation of the LTE eNB. The envisioned architecture enables the LTE to effectively schedule multimedia sessions based on the service requirements of the VANET gateways, thus satisfying QoS. Requisite simulation results are presented to evaluate the integrated network.
