In this paper, we present three versions of an open source software for biometric iris recognition called OSIRIS_V2, OSIRIS_V3, OSIRIS_V4 which correspond to different implementations of J. Daugman's approach. The experimental results on the database ICE2005 show that OSIRIS_V4 is the most reliable on difficult images while OSIRIS_V2 is the fastest. So, we propose a novel strategy for iris recognition using OSIRIS_V2 for good quality images and OSIRIS_V4 when the quality of the segmentation of OSIRIS_V2 is not sufficient to ensure good performance. To this end, we measure the quality of an iris segmentation thanks to a GMM model trained on good quality iris texture and we use a threshold on this quality value to shift between the 2 versions of OSIRIS. We show on ICE2005 database how the choice of this threshold value allows compromising between performance and processing speed of the complete process.

Integration of trust in routing mechanisms already prevalent in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has become an interesting research area of late. Several methods exist for the assignment of trust to the nodes present in a WSN. However the real challenge lies in proper integration of this trust to an existing routing protocol for the synthesis of a trust-aware routing algorithm. In this paper we try to take the help of Geometrical Mean based indirect trust evaluation mechanism for calculation of trust of individual nodes and thereby use the calculated trusts for determination of the different route trusts (RTs). We present a link state routing protocol based only on these indirect trusts which forms the routes and finds the best trustworthy route among them by comparing the values of all the calculated route trusts as for each route present in the network. We have developed three algorithms related to this and have shown their merits. Finally, we compare our work with similar trust integrated routing protocols and show its advantages over them. © 2012 IEEE.

How to exchange information between parties in a mega-scale disaster management system is one of the fundamental challenges to support timely and efficient disaster response and relief. Specifically, the timeliness, scalability, and availability are three desirable features for information exchange. We call the framework to support information exchange with the three features an Open Information Gateway, OIGY in short. In this paper, we present the challenges of information gateway, and the design of the communication protocols and the fundamental components and distributed service recovery algorithms to support the aforementioned features. The algorithm aims at recovering the real-time publish and subscription services without the global information of network topology, available service brokers, and publish/subscription databases. A centralized algorithm is also presented for small scale networks.

This paper presents a framework for binary code analysis that uses only SAT-based algorithms. Within the framework, incremental SAT solving is used to perform a form of weakly relational value-set analysis in a novel way, connecting the expressiveness of the value sets to computational complexity. Another key feature of our framework is that it translates the semantics of binary code into an intermediate representation. This allows for a straightforward translation of the program semantics into Boolean logic and eases the implementation efforts, too. We show that leveraging the efficiency of contemporary SAT solvers allows us to prove interesting properties about medium-sized microcontroller programs. © J. Brauer, R. R. Hansen, S. Kowalewski, K. This paper presents a novel method for classification of multi-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The feature extraction is based on the random projection (RP) concept for dimensionality reduction. Furthermore, the classification is performed by a neuro-fuzzy classifier. Such a model can be easily implemented on portable systems for practical applications in both health monitoring and diagnostic purposes. Moreover, the RP implementation on portable systems is very challenging featuring both energy efficiency and feasibility. The proposed method is tested on a 12-lead ECG database consisting of 20 beats during normal sinus rhythm, 20 beats with myocardial infarction and 20 beats showing cardiomyopathy for 60 different subjects. The experiments give a recognition rate of 100% for a small number of RP coefficients (only 25), i.e. after a considerable dimensionality reduction of the input ECG signal. The results are very promising, not only from the classification performance point of view, but also while targeting a low-complexity feature extraction in terms of computation requirements and memory usage for real-time operation on a wireless wearable sensor platform.

Current trends in VLSI designs necessitate low power during both normal system operation and testing activity. Traditional Built-in Self Test (BIST) generators rise unnaturally the power consumption during testing, boosting the need to add low-power solutions to the arsenal of BIST pattern generators. In this paper, the utilization of gray code generators is proposed as a low-power BIST solution. More precisely, we show how the time required to apply a given test pattern can be decreased, by switching between different gray sequences during the application of the test set. Experimental results indicate that the time required to embed the test set within a low-power sequence is reduced to almost 50%, compared to a previously proposed solution.

Effective execution of a planned path by an underwater vehicle is important for proper analysis of the gathered science data, as well as to ensure the safety of the vehicle during the mission. Here, we propose the use of an unscented Kalman filter to aid in determining how the planned mission is executed. Given a set of waypoints that define a planned path and a dicretization of the ocean currents from a regional ocean model, we present an approach to determine the time interval at which the glider should surface to maintain a prescribed tracking error, while also limiting its time on the ocean surface. We assume practical mission parameters provided from previous field trials for the problem set up, and provide the simulated results of the Kalman filter mission planning approach. The results are initially compared to data from prior field experiments in which an autonomous glider executed the same path without pre-planning. Then, the results are validated through field trials with multiple autonomous gliders implementing different surfacing intervals simultaneously while following the same path.

In this paper we present a method for automatically planning robust optimal paths for a group of robots that satisfy a common high level mission specification. Each robot's motion in the environment is modeled as a weighted transition system, and the mission is given as a Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formula over a set of propositions satisfied by the regions of the environment. In addition, an optimizing proposition must repeatedly be satisfied. The goal is to minimize the maximum time between satisfying instances of the optimizing proposition while ensuring that the LTL formula is satisfied even with uncertainty in the robots' traveling times. We characterize a class of LTL formulas that are robust to robot timing errors, for which we generate optimal paths if no timing errors are present, and we present bounds on the deviation from the optimal values in the presence of errors. We implement and experimentally evaluate our method considering a persistent monitoring task in a road network environment.

This paper introduces an optimal deployment algorithm of sensors in a given region to provide desired coverage and connectivity for a wireless sensor network. Our paper utilizes two separate procedures for covering different regions of a symmetrical rectangular area. The proposed method divides the given area of interest into two distinct sub-regions termed as the central and edge regions. In each region, a unique scheme is used to determine the number and location of sensors required to monitor and completely cover the region keeping the connectivity and coverage ranges of the sensors, their hardware specification and the dimensions of the region concerned as the constraints. Our scheme reduces the overhead in determining the position of sensors for deployment by following a coverage and connectivity algorithm of lesser complexity rather than those present in related schemes. Finally, we compare our deployment scheme with the interpolation scheme of [2] in regions of different dimensions and different coverage and connectivity levels with different sensing ranges of the sensors to show our cost efficiency over the latter.

Nowadays, CAN bus, as a well-known, fieldbus, reaches its limits when dealing with sophisticated embedded systems that require reliability and high-speed data transfer. Switched fabric can be a fast and reliable hardware solution for existing CAN-bus limits. In fact, it allows multiple packets to be transferred simultaneously ensuring sufficient bandwidth. To resolve this problem when keeping the use of CAN protocol, we remove the CAN access technique module from an existing VHDL implementation of a CAN controller component and we replace it by a crossbar switched fabric, implemented in VHDL also. In this paper, we designed a Crossbar switched fabric CAN based on VHDL modules and we simulated it under ModelSim tools and we give of proof-of-concept of a CAN controller based on crossbar switched fabric.
