Presents the development of a neural-network-based bird removal approach for wind profiler data. Bird removal was attempted by training traditional feedforward neural networks (FFNNs) and quantum neural networks (QNNs) to identify and remove bird-contaminated data recorded by a 1290 MHz wind profiler. A series of experiments evaluated several sets of features extracted from wind profiler data, various FFNNs and QNNs of different sizes, and criteria employed for identifying birds in wind profiler data based on the outputs of the trained neural networks.

In the maintenance phase of software development, it is necessary to check that all features still perform correctly after some changes have been applied to existing software. However, it is not easy to debug the software when a defect is found in those features which have not changed during the modification, even using a regression test. Existing approaches employ program deltas to specify defects; they have the limitation of it being hard to enact them, and they don't support any actual debugging activities. Moreover, such a system is hard to introduce into an actual environment. In this paper, we propose DMET (Debugging METhod) to solve such problems. DMET supports debugging activities when a defect is found by regression tests through detection, indication and reflection procedures. We also implement DSUS (Debugging SUpporting System) based on DMET. DSUS executes DMET procedures automatically, and it is easy to configure for an existing environment. Through experimentation with DMET and DSUS, we have confirmed that DMET/DSUS reduce the debugging time of software significantly. As a result, DMET/DSUS help in evolving the software for the software maintenance aspects.

This paper proposes a factorization method that reconstructs camera motion and scene shape based on the matching of multiple images under the condition that the camera captures a perspective view. Starting from the affine projection camera model, the projection depth is iteratively estimated until the measurement matrix has rank 4. Then, the obtained measurement matrix is factorized to restore the three-dimensional inf.rmation of the scene in the projection space. This approach eliminates noise sensitive processes, such as the calculation of the fundamental matrix, that are required in the factorization for the conventional perspective projection image, and a stable reconstruction is realized. Furthermore, the metric constraint in the conventional affine model is extended, and the metric constraint in the perspective projection condition is derived. It is shown that the reconstruction in Euclidean space is realized if the internal parameters of the camera are given.

Knowledge discovery techniques have not been widely used with macroeconomic data despite the social and political importance inherent in accurate economic forecasting. Rather, economic forecasting is currently performed with the use of models that rely heavily on theoretical assumptions. Economic assumptions are invariably contentious and model predictions are often rejected or accepted based on subjective perceptions about assumptions. We present an application of KDD (knowledge discovery in databases) that generates a forecasting model that avoids economic assumptions by focusing entirely on existing data. Although association rules are typically used for finding interesting patterns in data, this is not a strategy we employed. Our approach differs in that all possible association rules between variables representing the current state of an economy in a quarter and the state in the next quarter are generated to form a matrix. A metric based on the support, confidence and expected probability of each rule is then derived. The system has been used to perform economic analyses of existing and future government policies. The system has been developed using data from the US economy over the last 30 years. © 1999 IEEE.

In this paper we show several results about monotone planar circuits. We show that monotone planar circuits of bounded width, with access to negated input variables, compute exactly the functions in non-uniform AC/sup 0/. This provides a striking contrast to the non-planar case, where exactly NC/sup 1/ is computed. We show that the circuit value problem for monotone planar circuits, with inputs on the outerface only, can be solved in LOGDCFL/spl sube/SC, improving a LOGCFL upper bound due to Dymond and Cook. We show that for monotone planar circuits, with inputs on the outerface only, excessive depth compared to width is useless; any function computed by a monotone planar circuit of width w with inputs on the outerface can be computed by a monotone planar circuit of width O(w) and depth w/sup O(1)/. Finally, we show that monotone planar read-once circuits, with inputs on the outerface only, can be efficiently learned using membership queries.

A crucial aspect of effective networking on the battlefield is choosing the correct networking architecture. Multi-hop wireless networks provide the best model for tactical networking because of their ability to self-organize and rapidly adapt to change. We focus on a multi-hop wireless network model that is highly dynamic and that consists of mobile base stations and mobile hosts. In this model, there are two key requirements for enabling an effective networking inf.astructure for the battlefield: the support of highly mobile nodes and the scalability to a large number of nodes. We present some of the system-level challenges encountered in highly dynamic multi-hop wireless networks. In particular, we address the topology model, the location model, and the routing model in light of the aforementioned challenges.

A template-driven generation of prosodic inf.rmation is proposed for Chinese text-to-speech conversion. A set of monosyllable-based synthesis units is selected from a large continuous speech database. The speech database is employed to establish a word-prosody-based template tree according to the linguistic features: tone combination, word length, part-of-speech (POS) of the word, and word position in a sentence. This template tree stores the prosodic features including pitch contour, average energy, and syllable duration of a word for possible combinations of linguistic features. Two modules for sentence intonation and template selection are proposed to generate the target prosodic templates. The experimental results for the TTS conversion system showed that synthesized prosodic features quite resembled their original counterparts for most syllables in the inside test. Evaluation by subjective experiments also confirmed the satisfactory performance of these approaches.

We present a web-based course system for teaching and training the industry employee. This system is designed to synchronize and retrieve the data related to HTML lecture notes and lecture video. The overall system consists of two frameworks, the Web-based Synchronized Multimedia Lecture (WSML) framework and the XML-Based Synchronized Hypermedia Video Query (XSHVQ) framework. The WSML system synchronizes the presentation of the streaming video lecture, the HTML-based lecture notes and the HTML Navigation Events. It also automates the recording of these three media events based on the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMLL) specification. To create an online course using this system, teachers first convert their lecture notes into the HTML pages and present the HTML-based lectures in a digital studio. Then the synchronized video clips and the associated HTML-based notes are deposited in our course database for on-demand self-paced learning. The XSHVQ system is designed to efficiently search for the desired video segments based on the synchronization inf.rmation between video clips and the associated HTML-based notes. To query desired video segments using XSHVQ system, users simply use "keyword" search for the HTML lecture notes and the system can locate the corresponding video segments and present them to users.

Embedded controllers in safety critical applications rely on the highest of software quality standards. Testing is performed to ensure that requirements and specifications are met for all the different environments in which the controllers operate. This paper describes the architecture of a system that uses a relational database for tracking tests, requirements, and configurations. The relational sub-schemas are integrated in a data warehouse and allow traceability from requirements to tests. A normalized representation of test cases enables the system to reason about the test topologies and is used for constructing clusters of similar tests. A representative test from each cluster can in turn provide a rapid estimation, of the software's requirement coverage and quality.

This paper proposes an algorithm, called probability-based multicast tree (PBMT) algorithm, for multicast routing in wireless ATM networks. The PBMT is established from a fixed base station (BS) by several steps. First, the network is modeled as a graph with nodes denoting the BS and edges representing links between BS. An edge is added into any two nodes when their coverage areas overlap each other. Then, the degree of each node in the graph is computed. Based on the computed degree of each node, the probability of a mobile user moving to a new node can be determined. In order to identify the importance of each node, the cost of the edge is weighed based on the probabilities of corresponding nodes. Finally, a node with maximal degree is selected repeatedly until a minimal-spanning tree is formed. Nodes that do not belong to the multicast members are pruned. Simulation has been done to compare the performance analysis by our algorithm with these of other algorithms.
