Designing effective congestion control strategies for broadband networks is known to be difficult because of the variety of dynamic parameters involved such as link speeds, burstiness of the traffic, and the distances between traffic sources and switching nodes. We propose a traffic management scheme, which is insensitive to the propagation delay between the sources and switching nodes. We achieve this by combining connection admission control with a bandwidth allocation strategy. By seeking the cooperation of the available bit rate (ABR) sources (to limit their peak cell rate, PCR) at the time of admission of a variable bit rate (VBR) source to the network, the scheme eliminates the continuous congestion control. Our simulations show that the strategy is able to eliminate the ABR cell losses, achieves effective server and buffer utilization, and provides bounded delays to the VBR traffic (unlike the case without any controls).

This paper addresses the problem of performance estimation for data-flow algorithms, and proposes a novel approach suitable in IP-based design methodology. It assumes that an algorithm is defined as a set of interacting blocks, where each block is associated with implementations for target processors, and the delay for each implementation has been already measured and is characterized by a delay equation. The estimation is performed using delay equations, rather than considering detailed implementations of the blocks. This assumption matches well with the trend of system design, in which the system behavior is specified by using already characterized components. The estimation procedure takes into account decisions made carefully at compile time, such as inter-block scheduling and static memory allocation. This estimation technique is very fast and accurate, in particular for algorithms with small run-time dependencies such as those in data-flow applications. The procedure has been implemented, and preliminary experimental results are presented for single DSP architectures to demonstrate its effectiveness.

The limiter and microwave soliton behavior were experimentally demonstrated in the microstrip line using the 20 /spl mu/m thick yttrium iron garnet film substrate at S band. These nonlinear phenomena were explained by the strong coupling between quasi-TEM and magnetostatic forward volume wave modes at magnetic resonance frequency of /spl gamma//spl mu//sub 0/H/sub 0//2/spl pi/ from an implicit dispersion relation of the stripline.

This paper focuses on two perspectives. First, there are many multimedia presentation systems that do not provide dynamic presentations. In order to improve the drawback, we allow dynamic presentations in our multimedia presentation system. We introduce the concept of data flow and control flow diagram for multimedia presentations have been broadly used in the structured analysis/design of software systems in recent years. Graphical control flow permits the stepwise refinement of the software specifications toward a detailed design and implementation. We introduce some additional graphical components in our multimedia DFD/CFD. It also allows the presentation to change itself. Thus, this dynamic multimedia presentation can let users (audiences) to learn and act according to their individual background. So, a presentation designer may analyze and design a presentation in a systematic way. In order to let our multimedia presentation system also deal with the problem of synchronization, our design tool also uses timed Petri Net.

The distributed object oriented computing model is the next logical step to develop distributed applications. In recent years, several object models have been proposed, such as COM/DCOM, CORBA, and JAVA Bean etc. In CORBA, which was announced by OMG, object request broker is a software bus to connect applications and object components. In addition, multi threaded programming is a well known technique to improve the performance of applications. In a CORBA environment, clients can invoke the remote objects that are shared. If those objects are single threaded it will affect system performance in large distributed applications. We describe in detail the design and implementation of multi threaded object request broker based on CORBA. Our ORB was implemented atop Windows NT and underlying TCP protocol. Finally, we compare our system's performance with IONA's Orbix, which is a well known commercial product, in both one-way and two-way request.

The paper presents a method of designing curves and surfaces by solving the constraints imposed on the shapes at multiresolution levels. In this method, the curves and surfaces are represented by endpoint interpolating B splines and their corresponding wavelets. At each resolution level, the shape is determined by minimizing the energy function subject to the deformation of the shape while preserving the given constraints. Constraints at a low resolution level are converted to those at a high resolution level using wavelet transforms in order to associate all the constraints with the common basis functions. The constraints at multiresolution levels are then solved recursively from low to high resolution levels. Design examples are also presented.

Program dependency graphs (PDG) facilitate program analysis and related applications such as program slicing, which is a method to identify the relevant entities of the program according to data and control dependencies. In the past, PDGs and program slicing were mostly developed for (conventional) imperative programs. Recently, the object-oriented (OO) paradigm has gained momentum and popularity. The OO paradigm introduces the features of object abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism to programs, but is not considered in PDGs and program slicing. In this paper, we present an object-oriented dependency graph (ODG) to represent the structure of OO programs. The ODG is defined based on a property multi-digraph that is extended from a directed graph by augmenting multiple edge types, vertex properties and property relations. With these extensions, the ODG can avoid specious dependencies due to object encapsulation. Based on the ODG, a program slicing method for OO software is developed. Besides data and control dependencies, dependencies caused by OO features are taken into consideration in our slicing method. Through the ODG, the slicing method can be applied to facilitate the understanding, debugging and maintenance of OO software in the same way that traditional program slicing methods do.

The paper studies two methods for detecting and removing channel error patterns in images transmitted by two-dimensional differential-pulse-code-modulation (2-D DPCM) with fixed-length words. The methods are based on statistical classification and filtering procedures. For the predictions A + (C - B)/2 and A + (D - B)/2 in combination with 4-b DPCM, it is demonstrated experimentally by computer simulation that the effect of channel errors can effectively be reduced at bit-error rates (BER's) up to approximately 0.1%.

The goal of many image processing tasks is to recognise objects, to match scenes and to classify images. The shape, gray or colour features of objects are mainly used to describe objects. The most efficient method used to describe such features of an object is to use various transformed moments. We express the moments as a linear combination of higher order prefix sums, obtained by iterating the prefix sum computation on previous prefix sums, starting with the original function values. Thus the p'th moment m/sub p/=/spl Sigma//sub x=1//sup N/ x/sup p/f(x) can be computed by O(N/spl middot/p) additions followed by p multiply-adds. The prefix summations can be realized in time O(N) using p+1 simple adders, and in time O(p/spl middot/log N) using parallel prefix computation and O(N) adders. In 1986 Hatamian published a computationally equivalent algorithm, based on a cascade of filters performing the summations. Our recursive derivation allows for explicit expressions and recursive equations for the coefficients used in the final moment calculation. Thus a number of alternative forms for the moment computation can be derived, based on different sets of prefix sums, allowing some simplifications in the implementations.

We compare learning vector quantization, fuzzy learning vector quantization, and a deterministic scheme called the dog-rabbit (DR) model for generation of multiple prototypes from labeled data for classifier design. We also compare these three models to three other methods: a dumping method due to Chang (1974); our modification of Chang's method; and a derivative of the batch fuzzy c-means algorithm due to Yen-Chang (1994). All six methods are superior to the labeled subsample means, which yield 11 errors with 3 prototypes. Our modified Chang's method is, for the Iris data used in this study, the best of the six schemes in one sense; it finds 11 prototypes that yield a resubstitution error rate of 0. In a different sense, the DR method is best, yielding a classifier that commits only 3 errors with 5 prototypes.
