Owing to the growing concern regarding harmonic pollution in power distribution systems, and the adoption of standards such as IEC 555-2, there is a need for power supplies whose AC line currents are low in harmonic content and have power factor close to unity. Unity power factor circuits are becoming one of the most important requirements for power electronics. In this paper the idea of using a boost rectifier with nonlinear discrete control is used. In this paper the robust nonlinear sliding mode discrete time control in the mains rectangular (ab) coordinate system is discussed. Simulation results are presented.< >

This paper presents an implemented navigation system for mobile robots in dynamic environments. In order to take advantage of existing knowledge of the world and to deal with unknown obstacles in real time, our system divides motion planning into global path planning and local reactive navigation. The former uses genetic algorithm methods to find a collision-free path; the latter is implemented using neural network techniques to track the path generated by the global planner while avoiding unknown obstacles on the way. As a result, the system can adapt to dynamic environmental changes. Our experiments, both in simulation and on a real robot, showed that the system can find a reasonably good free path in a fraction of the time necessary to find an optimal free path, and it can effectively achieve its goal configurations without collision.< >

Molecular binding, important in drug design, explores the accurate binding structures between molecules. This exploration can be formulated as a global optimization problem. However, the problem in molecular binding is that the search space is very large and the computational cost increases tremendously with the growth of the degrees of freedom. In this paper, we utilize a new algorithm called the annealing genetic algorithm to solve the global optimization problem in molecular binding. Using a protein with three anti-cancer drugs in our model, our algorithm can find a binding structure with a complicated energy computation within a couple of hours and the experimental results indicate that the solutions are reasonable.< >

In this paper, a bar code recognition system using neural networks is proposed. It is well known that in many stores the laser bar code reader is adopted at check-out counters. However, there is a major constraint when this tool is used. That is, unlike traditional camera-based picturing, the distance between the laser reader (sensor) and the target object is close to zero when the reader is applied. This may result in inconvenience in store automation because human operator has to take care of either the sensor or the objects (or both). For the purpose of store automation, human operator has to be removed from the process, i.e., a robot with visual capability requires to play an important role in such system. In this paper, we propose a camera-based bar code recognition system using backpropagation neural networks. The ultimate goal of this approach is to use camera instead of laser reader such that store automation can be achieved. There are a number of steps involved in the proposed system. The first step the system has to perform is to locate the position and orientation of the bar code in the acquired image. Secondly, the proposed system has to segment the bar code. Finally, we use a trained backpropagation neural network to perform bar code recognition task. Experiments have been conducted to corroborate the proposed method.

Two statistical approaches for 3-D reconstruction from an image sequence are compared: the asymptotic Bayesian surface reconstruction and the Kalman filter-based depth estimation. Both techniques are recursive algorithms where relevant inf.rmation contained in previously taken images is summarized in a prior term (prior to the taking of the next image). This means that the reconstruction results are based upon inf.rmation from all images but the storage and computation required do not grow dramatically. Experiments with both real images and computer generated images demonstrate that the asymptotic Bayesian approach achieves better results than the Kalman filter-based approach, largely due to better problem formulation.< >

In an attempt to explore the orderliness by self-organization among populations, we find the idea can be applied to solve the optimization problem. We illustrate the idea and method with many varieties of the travelling salesman problem (TSP) examples. In our method a simple geometric order of the neurons is implicitly designed for the problem. The loci of the cities are represented by proper templates. The solution of the round tour is displayed by self-organization of the templates on these ordered neurons. We test the efficiency of the proposed method by comparing the statistics of simulation results with an another potential methods. Our method can be extended to both problems of multi-dimensional distributed cities and non-straight route lengths between cities.

The authors formally define fuzzy multivalued dependencies on a chosen fuzzy database model. Since functional dependencies have already been extended for fuzzy database models earlier, they only deal with an important integrity constraint, namely multivalued dependencies (MVDs), for the fuzzy relational database introduced by B.P. Buckles and F.E. Petry (1982, 1985). It is shown that the fuzzy MVDs (FMVDs) are consistent and reduce to the classic MVDs when they involve precise attribute values. Some examples are given to show how the integrity constraints imposed by the FMVDs are forced whenever a tuple is to be inserted or to be modified.< >

The construction of a multitasking programming environment called MCPE is presented. MCPE contains multiple tasks so that it can speed up response and utilize idle CPU time. Tasks communicate with each other through shared data storage. The tasks (such as a structure editor and a static analyzer) were designed as lightweight processes. The shared data storage (such as the grammar tree and the symbol table) are managed by monitors to guarantee effective sharing. Access on shared data storage is broadcast, so that the related tools can terminate unnecessary jobs. MCPE has been built on Smalltalk using a library of reusable codes, such as the MVC (model, view controller) triad and classes. The experiments showed that response time has been reduced. New tools can easily be built by reusing these classes and can be added to MCPE with no further delay in system response.< >

Parameter identification of block oriented nonlinear systems containing continuous nonlinearities is presented. The procedure, based on the recursive least squares identification algorithm, is presented. The entire input signal area is divided into the N sections. For each section, there exists one line in the matrix of parameters. The use of covariance matrix resetting and the combinations of forgetting factors yield good simulation results. The procedure is used for adaptive control of nonlinear processes. The results obtained are demonstrated for a model air flow control device. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed solution are discussed.< >
