Physical Full Duplex (FD) operation in WLANs is a promising technology aiming at substituting the traditional Half Duplex (HD) functionality. An increased performance is expected which, theoretically, can be expressed as a double increase in system throughput. However, due to the initial design of the basic access method in WLANs, known as Distributed Coordination Function (DCF), this performance boost is poorly exhibited. Game theory is an invaluable tool to model the performance of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols used in WLANs. In this paper, we exploit game theory to propose a simple enhancement to the DCF access method, in order to increase the benefit received when the FD capability is enabled in ad-hoc WLANs. © 2023 IEEE.

Internetworks with a large number of routing devices that utilise the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol, benefit greatly if they are designed in a hierarchical manner. The multi-area feature of OSPF leads to reduced network overhead, low processing and memory requirements and smaller routing tables. This, however, comes at the cost of increased configuration complexity, especially at the Area Border Routers. The threshold after which splitting the OSPF domain into multiple areas, is an ongoing debate among network administrators. A well known rule-of-thumb is recommended by large vendors of networking devices setting that threshold to 50 routing devices. The objective of this preliminary work is to investigate that threshold by conducting a simulation-based study using the OPNET network simulation tool. To assess the network performance, we select the network convergence duration as the quantitative Key Performance Indicator (KPI) of our study. Results indicate that the above mentioned threshold does not appear to be appropriate and a revision of that empirical rule should be considered. © 2023 IEEE.

Key Information Extraction (KIE) is the process of extracting important data in a text or an image, such as the content of a military document. One popular method for performing KIE is by utilizing pattern matching with Regular Expression on texts from documents. However, this method is not efficient due to the fixed nature of RegEx, where we need an exclusive RegEx rule to extract certain data entities. To solve this flexibility issue, a deep learning method with Named Entity Recognition (NER) has been proposed. NER is applied to the scanned document using a transformer-based model called XLM-RoBERTa. This model has been chosen for the development of the KIE module as it supports Indonesian and has demonstrated good accuracy in previous studies. The model has been trained on a military document dataset in the Indonesian language, achieving an f1-score of 86.55%. This method has also been proven to be flexible, as the model can extract the same entities across different document types. © 2023 IEEE.

COVID-19 caused universities around the world to adapt their educational models to the new virtual modality. In Peru, higher education institutions integrated teaching-learning activities, integrating synchronous and asynchronous modes, through online classes and virtual learning spaces. The research aimed to identify the level of contribution of synchronous and asynchronous modes in virtual education, demonstrating the influence of five dimensions: psychological, technological, communication, pedagogical, and academic activities. With a quantitative approach, non-experimental design, and a sample of 1519 students at a public university, using an instrument based on a Likert scale. As a result, the synchronous mode had a greater contribution to virtual education, evidenced in the ease of use of technological tools, motivation, response time to queries, and effective communication, however, the asynchronous modality developed better research skills of the students, due to the autonomy and the better control of their time. The analysis by groups of careers and modes did not determine greater significance. The proceeds will serve universities as a contribution towards a new hybrid educational model. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The healthcare industry is undergoing a fundamental revolution with the integration of Quantum Natural Language Processing techniques for matching patient-clinical trials. This research envisions a paradigm where patients and clinical trials collaborate, changing the way healthcare is supplied and medical research is conducted. Apart from this, the research focuses on engaging patients in clinical trials. Patient involvement refers to the process by which patients and their healthcare providers collaborate to make decisions regarding their health. Within the framework of clinical studies, this may entail participants providing input on study designs or monitoring their data through wearable technology and smartphone apps. Quantum NLP has the potential to enhance patient outcomes and advance medical knowledge more quickly by enabling more precise and effective clinical trials. By setting the framework for future applications of quantum NLP, this study expands the conversation on the connection between quantum computing and healthcare. © 2025 IEEE.

The Renewable Energy Sources (RES) penetration in the power system of Cyprus has dramatically increased over the last years. As a result, the system is already facing significant challenges limiting the RES hosting capacity of the Distribution Network (DN). The major limitation factors are network congestion and voltage security. In this paper, alternative solutions for increasing the RES hosting capacity in DNs are reviewed, and a methodology is introduced to evaluate their effectiveness. More specifically, different inverter settings and an advanced centralised voltage control from power transformers are used to mitigate voltage-related issues, while network reinforcements and upgrading the operating voltage are considered for further increase in hosting capacity. The solutions and evaluation methodology are tested using a real MV network of the Cyprus distribution system and the strategic plan of the Cyprus Distribution System Operator (DSO) for maximizing RES hosting capacity is outlined. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

Legged robotic systems can play an important role in real-world applications due to their superior load-bearing capabilities, enhanced autonomy, and effective navigation on uneven terrain. They offer an optimal trade-off between mobility and payload capacity, excelling in diverse environments while maintaining efficiency in transporting heavy loads. However, planning and optimizing gaits and gait sequences for these robots presents significant challenges due to the complexity of their dynamic motion and the numerous optimization variables involved. Traditional trajectory optimization methods address these challenges by formulating the problem as an optimization task, aiming to minimize cost functions, and to automatically discover contact sequences. Despite their structured approach, optimization-based methods face substantial difficulties, particularly because such formulations result in highly nonlinear and difficult to solve problems. To address these limitations, we propose CrEGOpt, a bi-level optimization method that combines traditional trajectory optimization with a black-box optimization scheme. CrEGOpt at the higher level employs the Mixed Distribution Cross-Entropy Method to optimize both the gait sequence and the phase durations, thus simplifying the lower level trajectory optimization problem. This approach allows for fast solutions of complex gait optimization problems. Extensive evaluation in simulated environments demonstrates that CrEGOpt can find solutions for biped, quadruped, and hexapod robots in under 10 seconds. This novel bi-level optimization scheme offers a promising direction for future research in automatic contact scheduling. © 2024 IEEE.

The BART model is an advanced adaptation of transformers introduced by Facebook. It has incorporated elements from both BERT and GPT transformers, enabling significant advancements in language understanding and general speech processing. Utilizing both encoder and decoder components, BART proves versatile for various tasks, including translation, text completion, automatic sentence generation, entity recognition, sentiment analysis, and more. In this study, we focus on the study of pretrained models, BART and a modified version called distilbart, in the context of Zero-Shot Text Classification. In the experimental study we dive into the Zero-Shot technique applied to various pretrained Transformers. Our analysis demonstrates that, depending on the Model we utilize, we can achieve F1 scores of up to 88%, showcasing the model's effectiveness in discerning classes for this Sentiment Analysis problem using the Zero-Shot Text Classification technique. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, an efficient resource allocation scheme-based nonlinear energy harvesting (EH) Timeslot switching (TS) for single-input-single-output (SISO) SWIPT systems-(ERAS-NETS) is presented. The energy saturation characteristic is considered in the EH model where point-to-point (P2P) single-input single-output (P2P-SISO) SWIPT system is studied. Harvesting energy is based on Timeslot switching (TS) aiming at optimizing the average data rate where the TS ratio is a binary value (0 or 1). Hence, the problem is a nonconvex optimization problem because of the binary factor of the TS ratio. The optimization problem is solved using the Lagrange dual theorem that states that the optimal values of the Primal (P) and Dual (D) linear problem are the same if either solution is a basic feasible solution. Accordingly, the derivation of the optimal solution helps receiver to switch either to EH or information decoding (ID) based on the SNR value. Hence, the receiver will switch to EH in the districts having medium values of SNR, otherwise, the receiver will switch to ID in districts having SNR less than 5 dB or more than 25 dB. Different network performance metrics were considered in evaluating the proposed ERAS-NETS scheme in comparison with traditional state-in-the-art TS resource allocation schemes such as transmission power, distance between source and destination, pathloss exponent, and minimum required harvested energy. Simulations showed that ERAS-NETS improves energy efficiency with respect to different transmission power by 20%, 10%, and 3 % for high SNR, medium SNR, and low SNR districts, respectively. Improvement with respect to average energy efficiency versus other system performance metrics has also been noted for the proposed scheme. © 2023 IEEE.
