While fairness-aware machine learning algorithms have been receiving increasing attention, the focus has been on centralized machine learning, leaving decentralized methods underexplored. Federated Learning is a decentralized form of machine learning where clients train local models with a server aggregating them to obtain a shared global model. Data heterogeneity amongst clients is a common characteristic of Federated Learning, which may induce or exacerbate discrimination of unprivileged groups defined by sensitive attributes such as race or gender. In this work we propose FAIR-FATE: a novel FAIR FederATEd Learning algorithm that aims to achieve group fairness while maintaining high utility via a fairness-aware aggregation method that computes the global model by taking into account the fairness of the clients. To achieve that, the global model update is computed by estimating a fair model update using a Momentum term that helps to overcome the oscillations of non-fair gradients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach in machine learning that aims to achieve fairness using a fair Momentum estimate. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that FAIR-FATE outperforms state-of-the-art fair Federated Learning algorithms under different levels of data heterogeneity. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The Steam platform releases thousands of games almost every week, providing customers with many options, which require various considerations to make a purchase decision. Steam has features that can help consumers consider purchasing games, such as the help dashboard that provides information on game reviews and ratings. However, based on user input reviews, game ratings are still manual, which may cause human error and inaccurate results. To help gamers get the desired game information and increase customer purchasing power towards available games, sentiment analysis is one technique for classifying opinions. This study focuses on sentiment analysis of game reviews, which will result in classification into two classes, positive and negative. It will be measured for its performance based on the f1 score evaluation results. The proposed model that we created is to compare sentiment analysis models using the baseline Bi-directional Long-short Term Memory (BiLSTM), Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU), and fine-tuning Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformer (BERT). We then propose another model, BiLSTM-CRF, by examining the effect of using the last four hidden states of BERT and comparing it with the last one hidden state of BERT to be used in the BiLSTM-CRF model. Based on the results of sentiment analysis models we developed for the ten most reviewed games on Steam, the BiLSTM model combined with CRF on the last four hidden states yielded the best performance, with an Fl score of 95.2 %. This score exceeds the baseline transformer-based model's Fl score of 88.0%. This is because combining BiLSTM and CRF allows the log-likelihood of the BiLSTM emission sample to be obtained more accurately so the model does not lose its context. © 2023 IEEE.

An Effective Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm for Solving Global Optimization Algorithms

Recently, the Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) was proposed as a metaheuristic algorithm. Honey badger hunting behaviour inspired the development of this algorithm. In the exploitation phase, HBA performs poorly and stagnates at the local best solution. On the other hand, the sand cat swarm optimization (SCSO) is a very competitive algorithm compared to other common metaheuristic algorithms since it has outstanding performance in the exploitation phase. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to hybridize HBA with SCSO so that the SCSO can overcome deficiencies of the HBA to improve the quality of the solution. The SCSO can effectively exploit optimal solutions. For the research conducted in this paper, a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm called HBASCSO was developed. The proposed approach was evaluated against challenging CEC benchmark instances taken from CEC2015, CEC2017, and CEC2019 benchmark suites The HBASCSO is also evaluated concerning the original HBA, SCSO, as well as several other recently proposed algorithms. To demonstrate that the proposed method performs significantly better than other competitive algorithms, 30 independent runs of each algorithm were evaluated to determine the best, worst, mean, and standard deviation of fitness functions. In addition, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test is used as a non-parametric comparison, and it has been found that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms. Hence, the HBASCSO achieves an optimum solution that is better than the original algorithms. © The Author(s) 2024.

In this study we propose and evaluate AtheroRisk, a standalone integrated computer software system for the analysis of carotid B-mode ultrasound (U/S) images and videos. Our goal was to provide a tool to help physicians stratify stroke risk. The presented system is based on outcomes from different research studies, as well as European guidelines for the evaluation and treatment of carotid artery disease. The goal is to enable reproducible analysis of atherosclerotic plaques in real time. AtheroRisk brings together analysis of U/S image and/or video of the carotid arteries facilitating anonymization, standardization, noise filtering and segmentation of plaques;followed by image and motion feature extraction to derive plaque-composition and stability. All the above steps are combined to determine the annual stroke risk rate and the 5-year stroke-free survival rate. The system is powered by an SQLite local database, in which the end user can save and manage data extracted from processing and analysis in an anonymized way. The first version of AtheroRisk was developed following an incremental software development process. The developed system was verified using 54 U/S videos (27 Asymptomatic, AS;27 Symptomatic, SY cases) while the clinician’s satisfaction and comments were collected through a questionnaire-based validation process. The results show that the integrated system proposed in this study can be successfully used for the automated image and video analysis of the CCA plaque in ultrasound videos. © The Author(s) 2025.

We propose Pharos, a novel visualization recommendation system that makes use of several provenance data sources and multi-perspective overviews to boost the transparency and steerability of the recommendation engine. Pharos helps a user understand recommendation contexts along with the user’s analysis progress in three complementary overviews. Pharos also serves categorized and scalable recommendations, either expanding or narrowing a user’s analysis scope. Based on provenance data and explicit user annotations (i.e., bookmarked or excluded visualizations), Pharos dynamically updates a recommendation list. According to the provided context, a user can steer the recommendation direction by filtering recommended candidates and rearranging them via the weight controller of the similarity measure on the recommendation engine. We showed how Pharos helped users understand and steer visualization recommendations through two comparative user studies. © 2023. The Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers

Cyber resilience has become paramount as a transition of maritime systems towards digitization, particularly within DC shipboard microgrids (SMGs). Adopting innovative communication technologies can enhance the resilience of SMGs for stable operation. However, challenges like false data injection and Man-in-The-Middle attacks pose significant threats to SMG operations when integrating these technologies into ship intelligent grids. In this regard, this paper proposes a reliable deep learning (DL) method, especially an Artificial neural network (ANN) with a deep encoder-decoder architecture, for the detection of cyber-intrusions and mitigating their effects, ensuring system control and stability for resilient operation of SMG. Detecting malicious data intrusions is crucial for maintaining optimal grid conditions and preventing disruptions in load dispatch. The proposed method utilizes a fusion of current and voltage data features for comprehensive DL model training, resulting in an adequate level of detection accuracy and providing cybersecurity analysis for SMGs, addressing component-level attacks, and devising defense strategies from aspects of detection, mitigation, and prevention. Furthermore, the deep ANN is fine-tuned with optimal hyperparameters to effectively counter cyberattacks, achieving an enhanced accuracy rate of 97.51% and minimal loss of 0.101%, surpassing conventional machine learning approaches. Rigorous test scenarios are performed to validate the robustness of the proposed method, emphasizing the cyber resilience of DC SMGs for enhanced security and operational integrity. © 2024 IEEE.

The integration of human resources and artificial intelligence has shown a growing interest in automatically predicting personality traits, particularly in recruitment. To contribute to this field, we propose a new method to assist human resource professionals in Indonesia to identify candidates' personality traits. Biases come from personality tests due to their question format and susceptibility to manipulation on this research, we propose an approach that combines personality tests using the BFI form, which measures OCEAN personality traits, with personality trait predictions derived from Twitter data. This research aims to create a personality prediction model and system that efficiently and effectively screens candidate personality traits in human resources. This research has developed a novel model that combines personality test results with tweets personality prediction with an impressive F1-macro performance of 98%. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a language-level modeling approach for HighLevel Synthesis based on the state-of-the-art Transformer architecture. Our approach estimates the performance and required resources of HLS applications directly from the source code when different synthesis directives, in terms of HLS #pragmas, are applied. Results show that the proposed architecture achieves 96.02% accuracy for predicting the feasibility class of applications and an average of 0.95 and 0.91 R2 scores for predicting the actual performance and required resources, respectively. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Fully integrated Windows framework for source localization with MNE Python and FreeSurfer

There is a variety of software packages, toolboxes, or libraries for the analysis and processing of neurophysiological data such as EEG and MEG. Many of these solutions provide algorithms for both, sensor-space analysis and sourcespace analysis. Especially with the solutions that run on Windows machines, it is noticeable that the step of the volume model generation is usually not included, since the state-ofthe- art software for this (FreeSurfer) is a Unix-based software and thus not available forWindows machines. Therefore, our goal was to develop a fully-integrated software solution for Windows machines, accessing all processing steps already implemented in an existing toolbox and using FreeSurfer in the same system. Due to its widespread use, we chose MNE Python as the basis for our fully integrated software solution. We used the Windows Subsystem for Linux to create a virtual Linux kernel for the FreeSurfer installation. To demonstrate the workflow, the libeep, and AutoReject libraries have been added. A 64-channel EEG recording during right-hand movement (ME) and imagination (MI) was used to test the implemented workflow. The developed framework consists of several modules within Python, mainly using existing scripts and functions. The library libeep was integrated to read the EEG data with the '.cnt', eeprope format. AutoReject was used to automatically interpolate detected bad channels or to reject complete epochs. FreeSurfer was successfully integrated and customized Python scripts enabled the communication between MNE Python on a Windows machine and FreeSurfer on a virtual Linux kernel. With the above-mentioned EEG dataset, we performed source reconstruction and were able to show ERD/S patterns for both, ME and MI. Our new, fullyintegrated software framework can be used on Windows machines to perform a complete process of source reconstruction. © 2023 the author(s), published by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.
