Advanced brain tumor segmentation using DeepLabV3Plus with Xception encoder on a multi-class MR image dataset

Accurate segmentation of brain tumors from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans presents notable challenges. This particularly in differentiating tumors from surrounding tissues with similar intensity. This study utilizes the DeepLabV3Plus model with an Xception encoder to address these challenges. We evaluated the model on a dataset of 3064 MR images, which included meningioma, glioma, and pituitary tumors. The model achieved high segmentation performance, with an accuracy of 0.9991, Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 0.9529, and Jaccard Index (JI) of 0.9133. It also demonstrated substantial boundary precision, recording an Average Symmetric Surface Distance (ASSD) of 0.84 mm and a Hausdorff Distance (HD) of 2.3 mm. These metrics surpass those of existing state-of-the-art models. While the model performed well with well-defined tumor boundaries, it faced challenges segmenting tumors with ambiuous edges. These findings suggest significant potential for enhancing diagnostic accuracy in neuro-oncology. Future work will focus on enhancing the model’s sensitivity to subtle tumor features and expanding the dataset to include a broader range of tumor characteristics. Driver fatigue detection is increasingly recognized as critical for enhancing road safety. This study introduces a method for detecting driver fatigue using the SEED-VIG dataset, a well-established benchmark in EEG-based vigilance analysis. By employing advanced pattern recognition technologies, including machine learning and deep neural networks, EEG signals are meticulously analyzed to discern patterns indicative of fatigue. This methodology combines feature extraction with a classification framework to improve the accuracy of fatigue detection. The proposed NLMDA-Net reached an impressive accuracy of 83.71% in detecting fatigue from EEG signals by incorporating two novel attention modules designed specifically for EEG signals, the channel and depth attention modules. NLMDA-Net effectively integrate features from multiple dimensions, resulting in improved classification performance. This success stems from integrating temporal convolutions and attention mechanisms, which effectively interpret EEG data. Designed to capture both temporal and spatial characteristics of EEG signals, deep learning classifiers have proven superior to traditional methods. The results of this study reveal a substantial enhancement in detection rates over existing models, highlighting the efficacy of the proposed approach for practical applications. The implications of this research are profound, extending beyond academic realms to inform the development of more sophisticated driver assistance systems. Incorporating this fatigue detection algorithm into these systems could significantly reduce fatigue-related incidents on the road, thus fostering safer driving conditions. This paper provides an exhaustive analysis of the dataset, methods employed, results obtained, and the potential real-world applications of the findings, aiming to contribute significantly to advancements in automotive safety. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper forecasts the microeconomic level household expenditures using a novel hybrid deep learning approach. In terms of research significance, household finance control has a major influence on the finance system within the economy. Accurate forecasting of household finances assists in maintaining positive financial behavior among individuals and the economy. The DeepBoost multi-output regressor proposed in this paper is based on the 1D CNN-ANN and the XGBoost. The proposed model in this paper is compared with the R2, MSE, and MAE since it's a regression problem. The experimental results reveal that the proposed DeepBoost multi-output regressor has the best application in forecasting the multiple expenditures of households by outperforming the ANN, 1D CNN-ANN, and Random Forest Regressor models. The proposed DeepBoost multi-output regressor evaluated the housing, food, transportation, healthcare, other necessities, childcare, and tax expenditures that had 0.94, 0.98, 0.83, 0.94, 0.97, 0.97, and 0.99 values for the R2, 9037.71, 2692.12, 9788, 15077.33, 1373.93, 13629.36, and 1904.52 values for the MSE, and 66.07, 34.05, 73.17, 87.05, 26.25, 78.74, and 29.47 MAE values than the ANN, RFR, and 1D CNN-ANN models. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper presents NDAS (Noise-Decomposed Abnormal Segmentation), an innovative framework for robust medical image retrieval and segmentation. By explicitly decomposing noise and abnormal features, NDAS enhances retrieval accuracy and segmentation precision. Experimental results on the BraTS 2019 dataset validate NDAS’s superiority over CBMIR and SBMIR methods, achieving the highest Top-5 accuracy and Dice coefficient. This demonstrates its effectiveness in handling noise, isolating pathological regions, and retrieving diagnostically relevant medical images. NDAS offers a significant advancement in medical imaging analysis, emphasizing its potential for clinical applications requiring precision and reliability. © 2025 IEEE.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a primary cause of blindness, necessitating early detection and diagnosis. This paper focuses on referable DR classification to enhance the applicability of the proposed method in clinical practice. We develop an advanced cross-learning DR classification method leveraging transfer learning and cross-attention mechanisms. The proposed method employs the Swin U-Net architecture to segment lesion maps from DR fundus images. The Swin U-Net segmentation model, enriched with DR lesion insights, is transferred to generate a lesion map. Both the fundus image and its segmented lesion map are used as complementary inputs for the classification model. A cross-attention mechanism is deployed to improve the model’s ability to capture fine-grained details from the input pairs. Our experiments, utilizing two public datasets, FGADR and EyePACS, demonstrate a superior accuracy of 94.6%, surpassing current state-of-the-art methods by 4.4%. To this end, we aim for the proposed method to be seamlessly integrated into clinical workflows, enhancing accuracy and efficiency in identifying referable DR. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The paper proposes a method for developing spatiotemporally modulated structures operating at THz frequencies. In this technique, electromagnetic waves propagating inside microwave waveguides modulate the chemical potential of a graphene sheet both temporally and spatially. The modulated graphene sheet interconnects these waveguides with a plasmonic waveguide carrying a THz wave. This approach has been used to create an integrated device that encapsulates all components of a THz transceiver front-end in a single unit. The device leverages the extraordinary features of spatiotemporally modulated structures, such as nonreciprocal response and frequency mixing, to integrate all functionalities of a THz transceiver front-end. We have implemented a leaky-wave antenna, mixer, and duplexer with beam steering capabilities, all within a spatiotemporal graphene-based structure. The performance of the device is investigated both analytically and numerically in transmit and receive modes. Additionally, the modulating waveguides have undergone both electromagnetic and thermal numerical simulations to ensure they can handle the power required for efficient modulation of graphene without overheating, which could hinder their performance. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. The classification of histopathological images is crucial for the early and precise detection of breast cancer. This study investigates the efficiency of deep learning models in distinguishing between Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) and non-IDC in histopathology slides. We conducted a thorough comparison examination of eight sophisticated models: ResNet-50, DenseNet-121, ResNeXt-50, Vision Transformer (ViT), GoogLeNet (Inception v3), EfficientNet, MobileNet, and SqueezeNet. This analysis was carried out using a large dataset of 277,524 image patches. Our research makes a substantial contribution to the field by offering a comprehensive assessment of the performance of each model. We particularly highlight the exceptional efficacy of attention-based mechanisms in the ViT model, which achieved a remarkable validation accuracy of 94%, surpassing conventional convolutional networks. This study highlights the promise of advanced machine learning approaches in clinical settings, offering improved precision as well as efficiency in breast cancer diagnosis. © 2025 SPIE.

A framework for object tracking in videos with complex backgrounds and obstructions

The research of object tracking in videos utilizes computer vision and machine learning techniques to identify and track objects in the consecutive image frames of videos. The popular algorithms used in the research are YOLO, DeepSORT, StrongSORT, and ByteTrack. YOLO has gained recognition for its hardware efficiency and impressive performance in object detection tasks. It efficiently detects objects in the consecutive image frames of videos. On the other hand, DeepSORT, StrongSORT, and ByteTrack leverage the prediction capabilities to estimate the positions of objects in the next image frames. These algorithms play a significant role to enhance the capabilities of object tracking systems. Recently, many researchers have proposed their methods to enhance the accuracy in object tracking tasks. However, the division of videos into the consecutive image frames for tracking objects can pose challenges, especially when the videos have complex backgrounds and many obstructions in the image frames. In fact, the complex backgrounds with many obstructions in image frames decrease the accuracy of tracking objects in applications. In this study, we present TraObs, a framework for object Tracking in complex backgrounds with Obstructions in the image frames of videos. In TraObs, two novel mechanisms CFM and M-controller are proposed for detectors and trackers to enhance the accuracy of object tracking performance. CFM addresses the tracked objects which are missing in some image frames of videos, while M-controller makes sure the tracked objects with the correct object ids in the system. Some experiments with four testing datasets and benchmark datasets are designed and used respectively to analyze the performance of TraObs. Furthermore, the HOTA and MOTA metrics are used to evaluate our proposed methods. Considering the fact of increasing population and as a result, the number of patients is constantly increasing the delivery of medical services must be prompt and of good quality. There is no question that any perfect healthcare system should track the given activities, behaviours, schedules, and even general health of the patients. The focus of this study is in utilizing ML and DL in tracing patients and diagnosing ailments. Mounted cameras from different orientations and placements are intended for health monitoring and event surveillance for possible medical issues in the future. Classical ML and more advanced DL methods are applied for analyzing physiological and behavioral patterns to identify health conditions and stress the importance of high accuracy and real-time performance for practical purposes. Initial outcomes show that patient outcomes are enhanced by getting timely medical advice while decreasing hospital-based burdens on staff. Two challenging datasets, ETRI-Activity3D and NTU-RGB-D, are pre-processed to remove unimportant data and reduce computational load. A strong multi-feature description system can extract gradient values, and the process is followed by feature matching and feature optimization. Then, in the last Maximum Entropy Markov Model (MEMM) classifier is used, achieving an accuracy of 97.2% for ETRI-Activity3D, and 98.3% for the NTU-RGB-D dataset. ©2025 The authors.
