Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool.

A context-based 3D interpolation technique is proposed to enhance the out-of plane resolution of 3D medical images. The proposed technique represents a new approach of aiding 3D interpolation and improving its performance by efficient use of domain knowledge about the anatomy, objects and imaging modalities. In the new approach a family of adaptive 3D interpolation filters are designed and conditioned on different spatial contexts (classes of feature vectors). Training is used to incorporate the domain knowledge into the design of these interpolators. Experimental results show significant improvement of the new approach over some existing 3D interpolation techniques.

Cluster analysis is used in several research areas to classify data sets in groups by their similar characteristics. Metaheuristic-based techniques, such as Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), have been applied in order to increase the clustering algorithm performance. GA and ACO-based clustering algorithms are capable of efficiently and automatically forming natural groups from a pre-defined number of clusters. This paper presents a GA and an ACO algorithm to the clustering problem. Both algorithms were refined using local search in order to improve the clustering accuracy. The results are compared on numeric UCI databases.

Crystal growth of Rb2CdI4 was performed by Czochralski method. Transparent colourless crystals with monoclinic structure were obtained. Temperature dependence of the dielectric constant along the b-axis was measured with variation of frequency. The thermal expansions x i (i = a, b, c and a′;a′ = a + c) along the four independent axes were measured both by clip-type strain-gauge dilatometer and X-ray diffraction methods. These results show distinct anomalies associated with the ferroelectric transition at TC= 210 K. Copyright © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

This paper presents two approaches to achieve attentiveness of a virtual quiz agent in the interactions with multiple users at the same time. One attempts to improve the agent with an utterance strategy to determine whether, when, and whom to suggest the users the availability of hints or to urge the users to answer. In the other one, a transition state model presenting the agent's attitude that allows the agent to perform meaningful idle motions is introduced. The transition model is obtained in a Wizard-of-Oz (WOZ) experiment and is learned with support vector machine (SVM). These two prototype systems are evaluated with an automatic attitude test, go/no-go task (GNAT) and regular questionnaires. From the joint results of the evaluation subject experiments, the direction of finding an appropriate triggering timing of the agent's behaviours is proved to be effective. The objective of this study is to introduce the concept of evolving granular neural networks (eGNN) and to develop a framework of information granulation and its role in the online design of neural networks. The suggested eGNN are neural models supported by granule-based learning algorithms whose aim is to tackle classification problems in continuously changing environments. eGNN are constructed from streams of data using fast incremental learning algorithms. eGNN models require a relatively small amount of memory to perform classification tasks. Basically, they try to find information occurring in the incoming data using the concept of granules and T-S neurons as basic processing elements. The main characteristics of eGNN models are continuous learning, self-organization, and adaptation to unknown environments. Association rules and parameters can be easily extracted from its structure at any step during the evolving process. The rule base gives a granular description of the behavior of the system in the input space together with the associated classes. To illustrate the effectiveness of the approach, the paper considers the Iris and Wine benchmark problems. © 2009 IEEE.

In recent years, computer-generated interactive virtual characters, called Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs), are subjects of considerable ongoing research. Nevertheless, their conversational abilities are mediocre compared to real human behaviors. Among limitations, most of ECAs are incapable of participating in natural conversations in which the number of participants can change dynamically. In the ongoing work we investigate principles of integrating a multi-user support in an ECA system. We present experiments and implementation approach of a prototype system in which a tour guide ECA interacts with one or two users. The system combines different technologies to detect and address the system users and draw their attention. Experimental interaction with the system produces encouraging results. The system can address the user's appearance, departure, decreased level of interest and identify his conversational role. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

This paper introduces a granular, interval-based evolving modeling (IBeM) approach to develop system models from a stream of data. IBeM is an evolving rule-based modeling scheme that gradually adapts its structure (information granules and rule base) and rules antecedent and consequent parameters from data (inductive learning). Its main purpose is continuous learning, self-organization, and adaptation to unknown environments. The IBeM approach develops global model of a system using a fast, one-pass learning algorithm, and modest memory requirements. To illustrate the effectiveness of the approach, the paper considers actual time series forecasting applications concerning electricity load and stream flow forecasting.

Embodied Conversational Agents (EGAs) are life-like computer generated characters that interact with human users in face-to-face multi-modal conversations. ECA systems are generally complex and difficult for individual research groups to develop. Therefore, if there was a common framework for connecting ECA functioning blocks seamlessly to an integrated system, redundant effort can be saved. This paper discusses the issues emerged in developing such a framework and introduces the design and preliminary results of our ongoing project, Generic ECA Framework.
