In recent years, the frequency of heavy rainfall disasters in Japan has increased due to the intensification of climate change-induced phenomena, accompanied by frequent occurrences of secondary disasters such as floods and landslides. Amphibious robots capable of mobility both on land and water surfaces are gaining attention for their potential to enable movement in environments that are challenging for humans to access, particularly for lifesaving and information-gathering during heavy rainfall disasters. In this paper, we develop a robot of amphibious with a horizontal articulated mechanism capable of moving on both land and water surface, with a focus on activities expected during heavy rainfall disasters. The proposed robot has a cylindrical torso, legs with horizontal articulation mechanisms, and a drive system powered by a single actuator. The experimental results confirmed that stable movement can be achieved on both land and water surface.

In this study, we explore the classification and prediction capabilities of three models-Genetic programming (GP), Logistic Regression (LR), and the Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN)-on the task of sodium-ion battery life prediction. By leveraging a dataset composed of multiple battery characteristics, we aim to determine the remaining power of sodium-ion batteries using these machine learning models. The KAN model, being a novel approach, demonstrates superior performance across various metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, when compared to the other two models. This highlights the potential of KAN as a robust model for complex classification tasks in the field of battery life prediction. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

Considering that optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) can change the optical channel, the enhancement performance of OIRS on the energy efficiency (EE) of the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based visible light communication (VLC) system is investigated. Specifically, a multi-cell VLC system is modelled with both line-of-sight (LoS) and OIRS-reflected paths, and then the problem is formulated to optimize the OIRS configuration and power allocation for the maximization of the overall EE while adhering to various constraints. Moreover, the original task is decomposed into two sub-problems, and is solved iteratively by the proposed algorithm. In addition, the convergence of the proposed algorithm and enhancement in EE achieved by OIRS are illustrated by simulation results, which offer beneficial insights on resource allocation for the NOMAbased VLC systems with OIRS. © 2024 IEEE.

Virtual Reality (VR) has received attention since the trend of the Metaverse came after the pandemic era. Several studies look into how Virtual Reality can be used in higher education. because all the research comes from the education field. However, previous research is too narrow in using technology, but not the area, impact, and challenges of Virtual Reality itself. Therefore, the systematic literature review (SLR) from 2016 to 2022 is discussed in this work to research how discipline, impact, and challenges of Virtual Reality in Higher Education. From 702 papers retrieved, and 214 candidates, to determine the applicability of the study question, 62 papers were chosen. The result shows that most discipline areas are still in computer science, followed by education and public health. Most reports said Virtual Reality is still highly impacted in solving the problem, especially in public health and education. However, there are still some pitfalls: the challenge of using The Head Mounted Device makes Virtual Reality-Induced symptoms and effects (VRISEs) such as Cyber sickness, simulator sickness, Motion sickness, dizziness, and physical discomfort. The implication of the SLR will be considered for academic purposes in preparing for the Metaverse era, especially in higher education. © 2022 IEEE.

NeRSP: Neural 3D Reconstruction for Reflective Objects with Sparse Polarized Images

We present NeRSP, a Neural 3D reconstruction technique for Reflective surfaces with Sparse Polarized images. Reflective surface reconstruction is extremely challenging as specular reflections are view-dependent and thus violate the multiview consistency for multiview stereo. On the other hand, sparse image inputs, as a practical capture setting, commonly cause incomplete or distorted results due to the lack of correspondence matching. This paper jointly handles the challenges from sparse inputs and reflective surfaces by leveraging polarized images. We derive photometric and geometric cues from the polarimetric image formation model and multiview azimuth consistency, which jointly optimize the surface geometry modeled via implicit neural representation. Based on the experiments on our synthetic and real datasets, we achieve the state-of-the-art surface reconstruction results with only 6 views as input. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Given a set of bus stops and a set of employees, the commuting bus routing problem with latest arrival time constraint (CBRP-LATC) aims to determine routes of buses to carry every employee from the company to one of the bus stops at which he/she wants to get off. Each employee walks to his/her destination after getting off the bus and has a desired time when he/she wants to arrive there, which is called the latest arrival time. The objective is to find a set of routes with the minimum total traveling cost that covers all employees' destinations under bus capacity and latest arrival time constraints. We propose an iterated local search algorithm in which we use two kinds of neighborhood operations called set-del/1-ins and VRP-OPT∗. The set-del/1ins operation consists of three neighborhood operations, setdel, 1-ins and set-del-ins to remove or assign employees from or to a bus route. The VRP-OPT∗ is a local search algorithm to improve the distances of routes based on four neighborhood operations, 2-opt, 2-opt∗, relocate and cross-exchange. Computational results show the effectiveness of the two neighborhood operations. © 2022 IEEE.

This research focuses on the use of machine learning methods, especially Random Forest, in designing tuberculosis drugs more effectively and efficiently. The research process begins with the creation of a QSAR (Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship) model using a dataset from ChEMBL that includes compounds with activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This model aims to predict the pIC50 value, which is an indicator of a compound's biological activity as a tuberculosis drug. The results of the Random Forest model showed high accuracy, which is 92%. This accuracy indicates that the model has a good ability in predicting the effectiveness of compounds against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. With this result, the developed model can be used as an auxiliary tool in the discovery of tuberculosis drugs and can be further developed to increase the effectiveness in drug research.

ITS is a method of teaching that uses technology to give lessons without the need for an instructor to be there. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted in this research to identify the components of an intelligent tutoring system, and the results are presented. The method used in this literature review is the prism method. The steps in the prism method are slr protocol, search for literature, select literature, summarize evidence and disseminate results. The slr protocol stage, it consists of determining a research question, searching for scientific reference sources with the keyword intelligent tutoring system, then sorting out the appropriate articles and making final conclusions. This article gives a detailed look at how the intelligent tutoring system changed over time during the pandemic epoch. Our contribution is complete information on the components of ITS in times of epidemic at universities, with the goal of improving their learning and practical use of the technology.

The annotation of medical images for the purpose of segmentation demands a high level of expertise and experience, and the generation of suitable datasets represents a significant challenge. In this study, we propose a method that facilitates annotation on a whole slide image (WSI) without requiring detailed specification of the lesion area. The objective is to enable annotation without the need for specialised knowledge. In particular, the WSI is divided into smaller regions for annotation purposes, with the proportion of lesions in each region being compared with reference images of similar regions, for which the proportion of lesions is known. The proportion of lesions in the reference small region image deemed to be most analogous is then designated as the annotation. The outcomes of an annotation experiment on multiple subjects based on this approach indicated that as the level of experience of the annotator increased, the variability in the accuracy rate diminished. This suggests that the annotators had acquired knowledge and skills through the process of annotation.
