With the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI), the scope of data analysis, prediction of performances, real-time feedback, etc. in learning analytics has widened. The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of using generative AI to analyze educational data. Moreover, the performances of two large language models (LLMs): GPT-4 and text-davinci-003, are compared with respect to different types of analyses. Additionally, a framework, LangChain, is integrated with the LLM in order to achieve deeper insights into the analysis, which can be beneficial for beginner data scientists. LangChain has a component called an agent, which can help study the analysis being performed step-by-step. Furthermore, the impact of the OpenLA library, which pre-processes the data by calculating the number of reading seconds of students, counting the number of operations performed by students, and making page-wise behavior of each student, is also studied. Besides, factors with the most significant impact on students’ performances were also discovered in this analysis. The results show that GPT-4, when using the data pre-processed by OpenLA, provides the best analysis in terms of both, the accuracy of the final answer, and the step-by-step insights provided by LangChain’s agent. Also, we learn the significance of reading time and interactions used (Add marker, bookmark, memo) by students in predicting grades. © 2024 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

Unstructured Numerical Image Dataset Separation (UNIDS) method employing an enhanced unsupervised clustering technique. The objective is to delineate an optimal number of distinct groups within the input grayscale (G-S) image content, utilizing the improved limited iteration agglomerative clustering (iLIAC) clustering technique for the separation and enhancement of picture elements. The UNIDS method is structured into two primary stages: partitioning and validation. In the partitioning stage, the UNIDS method identifies an appropriate number of discrete clusters within the grayscale image using the iLIAC technique, eliminating the need for predetermined procedures. Subsequently, the method evaluates the similarity and deviation among data elements within the same group in the resultant image dataset. Additionally, it assesses the proximity and inters severance among clusters in the outcome of the image dataset through the partitioning process. Empirical results indicate that the UNIDS system excels in the spontaneous identification of an optimal number of discrete clusters within the input G-S image. The system demonstrates superior thickness, reduced deviation among data elements within the same cluster, increased inter-separation, and diminished inter-closeness between cluster elements. Furthermore, empirical analysis establishes the superior performance of the UNIDS approach compared to existing clustering techniques. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

A learning artificial visual system for motion direction detection

Research on the visual system and its development is not only crucial for understanding how we see and interpret the environment from basic visual processing to complex perception but also aids in the development of technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer vision. In our previous paper, we have proposed a novel biological motion direction detection mechanism. Based on this mechanism, the authors of this paper proposed a learning artificial visual system (AVS) and use it to achieve motion direction detection. The learning AVS consists of two layers: the local visual feature detective neuron layer and the global feature detective neuron layer. For local motion direction detection, we use dendritic neurons to implement local motion direction-detective neurons and use them to extract local motion direction information. Global feature detective neurons are simply implemented by summing the local motion direction-detective neurons in each direction of possible motion. We trained the learning AVS by eliminating unnecessary branches or synapses and keeping only those that are strongly connected to the function of motion direction detection. computer simulations demonstrate that AVS can learn the correct motion direction of objects with different shapes, size and positions. We compare the performance of AVS with support vector machine (SVM) and traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs)—LeNet-5 and EfficientNet-B0 (EfN)—in motion direction detection and find that our learning AVS has better recognition accuracy, noise immunity and less demands on size of dataset and learning costs. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Space/air communications have been envisioned as an essential part of the next-generation mobile communication networks for providing highquality global connectivity. However, the inherent broadcasting nature of wireless propagation environment and the broad coverage pose severe threats to the protection of private data. Emerging covert communications provides a promising solution to achieve robust communication security. Aiming at facilitating the practical implementation of covert communications in space/air networks, we present a tutorial overview of its potentials, scenarios, and key technologies. Specifically, first, the commonly used covertness constraint model, covert performance metrics, and potential application scenarios are briefly introduced. Then, several efficient methods that introduce uncertainty into the covert system are thoroughly summarized, followed by several critical enabling technologies, including joint resource allocation and deployment/trajectory design, multi-antenna and beamforming techniques, reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS), and artificial intelligence algorithms. Finally, we highlight some open issues for future investigation.

Monitoring COVID-19 environment: a real-time facial mask detection using YOLO models

Purpose: The rapid spread of COVID-19 has resulted in significant harm and impacted tens of millions of people globally. In order to prevent the transmission of the virus, individuals often wear masks as a protective measure for themselves and others. Coronavirus protection guidelines have been published by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to WHO standards, COVID-19 can be prevented by wearing a mask in public places and congested regions. In these places, it is very difficult to personally check to see if people are wearing face masks or not. Methods: The objective of this research work is to build a powerful, efficient, and real-time approach for detecting people not wearing masks. Three cutting-edge object identification models, namely YOLOv4, Tiny-YOLOv4, and YOLOv5, are employed in this study for the identification of masked faces. Result: The proposed YOLOv5 model is evaluated using real-time images captured using a smartphone or tablet. The test images include both single and multiple people with and without masks. The YOLOv5 model achieved recognition accuracy of 88.90% with an average detection speed of 0.0316 s per image, whereas the YOLOv4 and Tiny-YOLOv4 produced recognition accuracy of 82.24% and 74.80% with an average detection speed of 0.0530 s and 0.0541 s per image, respectively. Conclusion: The comparative performance suggests that the YOLOv5 model has a maximum recognition accuracy of 88.90% in face mask identification tasks compared to other models such as the YOLOv4 and Tiny-YOLOv4. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering 2025.

The automatic localization of the left ventricle(LV)in short-axis magnetic resonance(MR)images is a required step to process cardiac images using convolutional neural networks for the extraction of a region of interest(ROI).The precise extraction of the LV’s ROI from cardiac MRI images is crucial for detecting heart disorders via cardiac segmentation or ***,this task appears to be intricate due to the diversities in the size and shape of the LV and the scattering of surrounding tissues across different ***,this study proposed a region-based convolutional network(Faster R-CNN)for the LV localization from short-axis cardiac MRI images using a region proposal network(RPN)integrated with deep feature classification and *** was trained using images with corresponding bounding boxes(labels)around the LV,and various experiments were applied to select the appropriate layers and set the suitable *** experimental findings showthat the proposed modelwas adequate,with accuracy,precision,recall,and F1 score values of 0.91,0.94,0.95,and 0.95,*** model also allows the cropping of the detected area of LV,which is vital in reducing the computational cost and time during segmentation and classification ***,itwould be an ideal model and clinically applicable for diagnosing cardiac diseases.

We study the problem of approximately transforming a sample from a source statistical model to a sample from a target statistical model without knowing the parameters of the source model, and construct several computationally efficient such reductions between canonical statistical experiments. In particular, we provide computationally efficient procedures that approximately reduce uniform, Erlang, and Laplace location models to general target families. We illustrate our methodology by establishing nonasymptotic reductions between some canonical high-dimensional problems, spanning mixtures of experts, phase retrieval, and signal denoising. Notably, the reductions are structure-preserving and can accommodate missing data. We also point to a possible application in transforming one differentially private mechanism to another. © 2025 M. An effective image fusion algorithm based on grey relation of similarity and morphology

Considering the problems of the limited energy in wireless multi-media sensor networks (WMSNs) and the focused regions discontinuity of the fused image obtained using traditional multi-scale analysis tools (MST)-based methods, an effective multi-focus image fusion algorithm is proposed in this paper. In this method, the original fused image is obtained based on wavelet transform where the low-frequency coefficients are fused by average scheme, whereas the high-frequency coefficients are fused by the proposed merging rule consisting of the grey relation analysis of similarity and local area energy. Then, grey absolute relation analysis is again utilized as measurement indicator to estimate the similarities between the initial fused image and source images, during which the initial map is acquired and then corrected by the mathematical morphological opening and closing. Finally, the fused image is obtained with the guidance of the corrected map, namely the decision map. Experiment results demonstrate that the fused image using the proposed algorithm is more continuous in focused region and more similar to source images in brightness compared with state-of-art multi-focus image fusion algorithms, such as Curvelet transform, lifting stationary wavelet transform (LSWT), non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) and non-subsampled shearlet transform (NSST). Meanwhile, the proposed method shows better superiority in term of the computational complexity. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

A Self-Labeling Method for Adaptive Machine Learning by Interactive Causality

Learning from unlabeled data or self-learning, can substantially reduce the complexity of machine learning (ML) utilization in real-time deployment. While the development of un/semisupervised algorithms shows promising results in learning with reduced labels, the fundamental assumption of data smoothness restricts its scope of application, especially with nonstationary data distributions in different domains. Leveraging transdomain invariant causal relationships, causality has recently been employed to foster robust ML. In this article, we have developed a generic method for self-labeling data that relies on known causality among interactive objects and learned temporal relations among causal events for identifying and associating labels and input data. The causal time-interval between asynchronous cause and effect events is studied to achieve self-labeling. We utilize dynamical system theory in a 1-d setting to demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms traditional feature similarity-based semisupervised learning. A computer simulation experiment was conducted to generate high-dimensional data, and the comprehensive results reveal the potential of learning adaptation in dynamic environments to improve ML robustness against shifts in data distribution. © 2023 IEEE.

Enhancing Skin Disease Diagnosis: Light GBM-DMS Algorithm for Accurate Image Classification

Globally, skin diseases are emerging as the most common health problem. It initiates depressive disorder, and it also causes physical health distress. It rarely led to skin cancer in extreme cases. Diagnosing skin disease is subjective and time-consuming when it is performed by health experts manually. Hence, automatic skin disease prediction is required by both dermatologists and patients to enhance and accelerate treatment plans. Even though many machine-learning techniques are available to detect skin diseases, the timely prediction and accurate classification of skin lesions are still in demand. Hence, the Discrete Mycorrhizal Search Algorithm is used to optimize the novel LightGBM to meet this objective. Firstly, intrusions like noise elimination and hair removal are performed and then the image resizing takes place by utilizing the preprocessing pipelines. Subsequent to data pre-processing, the prime features are extracted using the convolutional self-attention based L2 regularization, thus minimizing the data complexity. At last, the extracted features are shifted to the final categorization phase which is done by the novel approach for effective classification of skin diseases. Two skin disease classification images, including datasets, the Skin Lesions Dermatoscopic Image dataset and Skin Cancer MNIST HAM10000, are selected to validate the classification performance. Comprehensive analyses are performed with significant measures that showed the proposed model attained better performances of 98.6%, 0.95, and 10.43 s from accuracy, intersection of union, and execution time, respectively. The stability and robustness under different environmental conditions for clinical applications in skin disease detection and classification tasks are analyzed for making decisions in real-time scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.
