Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks organize large amounts of resources distributed across the Internet for user access. However, the availability of these resources is hindered by the participants' transient connectivity. Redundancy can be used to deal with this problem, but the redundancy repair traffic must be controlled to prevent performance degradation. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analytical formulation for erasure code redundancy methods in P2P networks, focused on fragments availability and redundancy repair cost. We use this model to evaluate the effectiveness of a proposed new redundancy scheme (PR) that outperforms other methods. Our results provide important insights for the design and construction of automated content availability mechanisms for P2P overlays under churn. Our evaluation framework allows us to determine at which point substituting a traditional erasure coding method (MDS) with other schemes is viable. For instance, e-MBR network coding performs worst than MDS for average fragment availabilities below 0.52. In addition, our experimental results indicate that adaptive repair strategies with elastic maintenance intervals can produce significant bandwidth savings compared with reactive and periodic redundancy repair strategies. In our experimental evaluation, an adaptive repair strategy consumes up to 49% less bandwidth than its periodic counterpart. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a new information-theoretic approach to competitive learning and self-organizing maps. We use several information-theoretic measures such as conditional information and information losses to extract main features in input patterns. For each competitive unit, conditional information content is used to show how much information on input patterns is contained. In addition, for detecting the importance of each variable, information losses are introduced. The information loss is defined by difference between information with all input units and information without an input unit. We applied the method to an artificial data, the Iris problem and a student survey. In all cases, experimental results showed that main features in input patterns were clearly detected.

Social media mixed with news in political candidate judgment: Order effects on knowledge and affect

In the context of politics, emotions and facts work together to shape opinions about political candidates. While there is considerable research on motivated reasoning about political issues, there is less attention to how affect and rationality combine in the hybrid world of new media. This study examined the interaction of social media comments about politicians with more traditional information sources. Participants were exposed to political candidates' Facebook news feeds, to news articles about the candidates, and to a political speech. The order of exposure was varied and measures of both knowledge and emotion were taken. When social media was encountered before news about a political candidate, it influenced feelings toward the candidate but did not influence personal mood or perceived knowledge. In contrast, when social media was encountered before information unrelated to the candidates, it negatively influenced all dependent measures. The findings are discussed in terms of motivated reasoning theories, Papacharissi's concept of "affective publics," and the implications for civic participation in the new media era. © 2016 - IOS Press and the authors.

The effect of the cyclic curricular design of modelling-based instruction with virtual labs

One issue facing teachers who implement model-based instruction within the school system is the tight curricular schedule. The ‘lesson objective tension’ calls for investigations to address instructional issues such as how to organise modelling-based instruction at the curriculum level which is across multiple units. We investigated the effect of the cyclic curricular design spacing out three modelling-based instruction units with virtual labs over three semesters, each involving 73, 181, and 150 junior high school students, respectively. Results indicate that, overall, the approach of modelling with virtual labs better promoted students’ scientific literacy than the traditional instruction did. Specifically, students with low and moderate school science achievements benefitted more as shown in their scientific literacy scores than did the high achievement students. Furthermore, this study found that receiving one unit of modelling-based instruction may not be sufficient to promote students’ scientific literacy, whereas the cyclic approach that suggests students receive two or more units of modelling-based instruction with virtual labs spaced over consecutive semesters had significant effects on promoting students’ scientific literacy. The results provide insights into when and how modelling-based learning with virtual labs can promote scientific literacy at a curricular level. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Misinformation or so called 'fake news' has become a pressing issue around the world. This research proposes modeling the spread of misinformation through Q-learning, the game of Nim, and multi-Agent simulations. Through analyzing theoretical properties of the model and studying factors in how misinformation affects it, we show how the model reflects the real-life impact of fake news. The scalability of the framework and its emulation of real-human behavior make it versatile and believable. Through further study of this model, our hope is to shed light on effective tactics for combating fake news in the real world. © 2022 IEEE.

Background: Screening for cognitive impairment in primary care is important, yet primary care physicians (PCPs) report conducting routine cognitive assessments for less than half of patients older than 60 years of age. Linus Health’s Core Cognitive Evaluation (CCE), a tablet-based digital cognitive assessment, has been used for the detection of cognitive impairment, but its application in primary care is not yet studied. Objective: This study aimed to explore the integration of CCE implementation in a primary care setting. Methods: A cohort of participants was recruited from the upcoming schedules of participating PCPs at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Eligibility criteria included individuals aged ≥65 years;ability to read, write, and speak in English or Spanish;no previous diagnosis of cognitive impairment;and no known untreated hearing or vision impairment. Research coordinators collected consent from participants and facilitated the screening process. PCPs reviewed reports in real time, immediately before the scheduled visits, and shared results at their discretion. A report was uploaded to each participant’s REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture;Vanderbilt University) record and linked to the encounter in the electronic health record. Feedback from patients and their caregivers (if applicable) was collected by a tablet-based survey in the clinic before and after screening. Participating PCPs were interviewed following the completion of the study. Results: The screened cohort included 150 patients with a mean age of 74 (SD 7) years, of whom 65% (97/150) were female. The CCE identified 40 patients as borderline and 7 as positive for cognitive impairment. A total of 84 orders were placed for select laboratory tests or referrals to neurology and neuropsychology within 20 days of CCE administration. Industrial and distribution service problems that belong to combinatorial optimization include vehicle routing with Vehicle Routing Problem. This research builds a framework and implements it in a multi-class optimization model to reduce overfitting and misclassification results caused by unbalanced multiclassification in the influence of the number of 'nodes' on vehicle routes with machine learning. The problem of imbalance in vehicle route classification has been a challenge in the classification process and attracted the attention of a number of researchers. The purpose of the model in general is to gain an understanding of the mechanism in the problem so as to classify the imbalanced vehicle route data based on JNE delivery routes. The solution method that will be used by applying k-nearest neighbor to determine the amount of carrying capacity of the goods will then determine the delivery location point with the vehicle routing problem. So that this model can be a model in determining vehicle routes based on the capacity limit of the number of shipments of goods. © 2023 IEEE.

Learning to write in children requires the child's habit of using a pencil to write on paper. The manual method has drawbacks such as the use of a lot of paper when children have to study harder to keep repeating the exercises and also cannot be done online remotely. In addition to this, writing exercises on the touchscreen can also train children to be more skilled at using the touchscreen. To overcome these problems, the author will discuss the use of handwriting recognition technology to practice writing capital letters (A-H), where the technology will be built on a web-based basis. The recognition algorithm used is K-NN. Testing the use of the website was carried out at Tunas Mekar Sari Kindergarten, Denpasar. The identification number and result will be stored on the web server. Based on the experiment, it was found that from 80 image data, the K-NN algorithm succeeded in providing accurate recognition results on 60 image data, and obtained an accuracy of 78.75%. © 2022 IEEE.
