ABL-SMOTE: A Novel Resampling Method by Handling noisy and borderline challenge for Imbalanced Dataset for Software Defect Prediction

Machine learning algorithms face important implementation difficulties due to imbalanced learning since the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) helps improve performance through the creation of new minority class examples in feature space before preprocessing. The underlying problem leading to performance deterioration emerges from noise and boundary instances found in the minority class rather than an excessive imbalance ratio. Noise and marginal samples become problematic during oversampling operations since they reduce the performance of classification models. This paper proposes an advanced version of Borderline-SMOTE (BL-SMOTE), called ABL-SMOT approach that utilizes INFFC for noise filtering to optimize data quality in the dataset. This improvement method for minority class sample placement and noise filtering ensures higher classifier performance through ABL-SMOTE. The proposed technique receives assessment through the usage of software defect datasets along with multiple testing classifiers against conventional data sampling procedures. The experimental outcomes show that ABL-SMOTE performs better than alternative approaches in most tested datasets because it is an effective preprocessing tool for imbalanced classification problems. © 2013 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence-inspired comprehensive framework for desertification prediction

Desertification greatly affects land deterioration, farming efficiency, economic growth, and health, especially in Gulf nations. Climate change has worsened desertification, making developmental issues in the area even more difficult. This research presents an enhanced framework utilizing the Internet of Things (IoT) for ongoing monitoring, data gathering, and analysis to evaluate desertification patterns. The framework utilizes Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) to categorize IoT data, while a low-latency processing method on edge computing platforms enables effective detection of desertification trends. The classified data is subsequently analyzed using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) optimized with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for forecasting decisions. Using cloud computing infrastructure, the ANN-GA model examines intricate data connections to forecast desertification risk elements. Moreover, the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model is employed to predict desertification over varied time intervals. Experimental simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the suggested framework, attaining enhanced performance in essential metrics: Temporal Delay (103.68 s), Classification Efficacy—Sensitivity (96.44 %), Precision (95.56 %), Specificity (96.97 %), and F-Measure (96.69 %)—Predictive Efficiency—Accuracy (97.76 %) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) (1.95 %)—along with Reliability (93.73 %) and Stability (75 %). The results of classification effectiveness and prediction performance emphasize the framework's ability to detect high-risk zones and predict the severity of desertification. This innovative method improves the comprehension of desertification processes and encourages sustainable land management practices, reducing the socio-economic impacts of desertification and bolstering at-risk ecosystems. Deep neural networks have succeeded in learning balanced and imbalanced data in the field of pneumonia diagnosis. However, both require separate model designs in their respective domains. The pneumonia recognition methods have poor transfer performance between the two types of image distribution data. This paper proposes BeFormer, which focuses on sample relationships. BeFormer introduces two stages, feature extraction and establishing sample relationships, to solve the problem. Specifically, in the feature extraction stage, a new backbone network called PANet based on Multi-Scale Frequency Domain Attention (FPSA) is proposed. In establishing sample relationships, Deformable Transformer is used in parallel to model the relationships between partial regions of interest among the same and different samples in the pneumonia dataset. These two modules are connected in series to form BeFormer. Without making any changes to the model, this paper conducted experiments using BeFormer on both balanced and imbalanced pneumonia datasets. As compared to traditional pneumonia recognition models, the proposed method achieved significant improvements in the two different data distributions, demonstrating outstanding transfer performance. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in generating human-like text poses significant challenges in distinguishing between human-written and AI-generated content. Recent advancements in natural language generation have significantly enhanced the quality and variety of AI-generated text, making it almost indistinguishable from human-written content. ChatGPT, a popular AI model, belongs to the generative pre-trained transformer family. While human content is created with a clear intent to convey meaning, AI-generated text aims to replicate human-like language. Classifying human-written and AI-generated sentences is crucial for addressing issues like fake news, plagiarism, and spamming. AI text often follows repetitive patterns, while human writing is more creative and original, making detection significant for combating misinformation. Therefore, this study proposes to classify human-written and AI-generated sentences using a hybrid CNN-GRU model optimized by the Spotted Hyena Algorithm (CHWAIG-DLSHO) approach. The approach involves preprocessing text data through tokenization, lemmatization, and data splitting, followed by word embedding using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). A hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) model is employed for sentence classification. The spotted hyena optimizer (SHO) model is utilized to fine-tune the hyperparameters of the CNN-GRU model, enhancing its performance. The analysis of the CHWAIG-DLSHO method takes place utilizing AI vs. human text dataset. The performance validation of the CHWAIG-DLSHO method portrayed a superior accuracy value of 99.17 % over existing techniques. © 2025 The Authors

UltraADV: An Unsupervised Deep Learning Lightweight Framework for Anomaly Detection in V2X

Designing anomaly detection systems for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) is a challenge. Deep learning has shown strong advantages in anomaly detection. However, labeling anomalies is often difficult and expensive, and deep neural networks often prioritize performances by incorporating a large number of parameters. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a lightweight anomaly detection framework which can be built with unsupervised learning methods. In this article, we propose a framework, the UltraADV, which is suitable for anomaly detection systems in V2X. In the framework, the autoencoder facilitates an unsupervised setting, while the knowledge distillation transfers the knowledge of a larger network to a smaller network. Ultimately, the compressed model can be deployed onto the resource-constrained devices for real-world applications in V2X. We evaluate the performances of multiple architectures of UltraADV on two publicly available datasets. Our best performing architecture demonstrably surpasses the benchmark in terms of performance metrics, parameter efficiency, and prediction speed. © 2014 IEEE.

SAMFNet: Scene-aware sampling and multi-stage fusion for multimodal 3D object detection

Recently, multimodal 3D object detection (M3OD) that fuses the complementary information from LiDAR data and RGB images has gained significant attention. However, the inherent structural differences between point clouds and images pose fusion challenges, significantly hindering the exploration of correlations within multimodal data. To address this issue, this paper introduces an enhanced multimodal 3D object detection framework (SAMFNet), which leverages virtual point clouds generated from depth completion. Specifically, we design a scene-aware sampling module (SASM) that employs tailored sampling strategies for different bins based on the density distribution of point clouds. This effectively alleviates the detection bias problem while ensuring the key information of virtual points, significantly reducing the computational cost. In addition, we introduce a multi-stage feature fusion module (MSFFM) that embeds point-level and regional-adaptive feature fusion strategies to generate more informative multimodal features by fusing features with different granularities. To further improve the accuracy of model detection, we also introduce a confidence prediction branch unit (CPBU), which improves the detection accuracy by predicting the confidence of feature classification in the intermediate stage. Extensive experiments on the challenging KITTI dataset demonstrate the validity of our model. © 2025 The Authors

Researchers have recently achieved significant advances in deep learning techniques, which in turn has substantially advanced other research disciplines, such as natural language processing, image processing, speech recognition, and software engineering. Various deep learning techniques have been successfully employed to facilitate software engineering tasks, including code generation, software refactoring, and fault localization. Many studies have also been presented in top conferences and journals, demonstrating the applications of deep learning techniques in resolving various software engineering tasks. However,although several surveys have provided overall pictures of the application of deep learning techniques in software engineering,they focus more on learning techniques, that is, what kind of deep learning techniques are employed and how deep models are trained or fine-tuned for software engineering tasks. We still lack surveys explaining the advances of subareas in software engineering driven by deep learning techniques, as well as challenges and opportunities in each subarea. To this end, in this study, we present the first task-oriented survey on deep learning-based software engineering. It covers twelve major software engineering subareas significantly impacted by deep learning techniques. Such subareas spread out through the whole lifecycle of software development and maintenance, including requirements engineering, software development, testing, maintenance, and developer collaboration. As we believe that deep learning may provide an opportunity to revolutionize the whole discipline of software engineering, providing one survey covering as many subareas as possible in software engineering can help future research push forward the frontier of deep learning-based software engineering more systematically. An ensemble approach for classification of diabetic retinopathy in fundus image

Diabetes-oriented diabetic retinopathy impacts the blood vessels in the region of the retina to enlarge and leak blood and other fluids. In most cases, diabetic retinopathy affects both eyes. If left untreated, it would eventually lead to blindness. Diabetic Retinopathy is so widespread that around 93 million adults are affected by it on a worldwide scale. Early identification and treatment would reduce the danger of serious diabetic retinopathy visual impairment. To achieve early detection, we can make use of our advancement in image processing to diagnose how severely the patient is affected by diabetic retinopathy. Using a patient’s fundus image and modern deep learning methods, we will be able to classify the result into five categories of severity: unaffected, severe, mild, moderate, and proliferate. Based on the results, the doctor would be able to determine what type of treatment is required to further avoid vision loss. The strategy outlined in this work is to employ five well-known deep learning models, namely Inception ResNet V2, VGG19, Xception, ResNet50, DenseNet112, and integrate their outcomes successfully utilizing ensemble learning. The experimentation outcome displays that the proposed approach classifies all the classes of Diabetic Retinopathy and performs better compared to other methods with a Specificity of 92.02%. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

A survey of distributed algorithms for aggregative games

Game theory-based models and design tools have gained substantial prominence for controlling and optimizing behavior within distributed engineering systems due to the inherent distribution of decisions among individuals. In non-cooperative settings, aggregative games serve as a mathematical framework model for the interdependent optimal decision-making problem among a group of non-cooperative players. In such scenarios, each player's decision is influenced by an aggregation of all players' decisions. Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking in aggregative games has emerged as a vibrant topic driven by applications that harness the aggregation property. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the current research on aggregative games with a focus on communication topology. A systematic classification is conducted on distributed algorithm research based on communication topologies such as undirected networks, directed networks, and time-varying networks. Furthermore, it sorts out the challenges and compares the algorithms' convergence performance. It also delves into real-world applications of distributed optimization techniques grounded in aggregative games. Enhanced Multi-Scale Object Detection Algorithm for Foggy Traffic Scenarios

In foggy traffic scenarios, existing object detection algorithms face challenges such as low detection accuracy, poor robustness, occlusion, missed detections, and false detections. To address this issue, a multi-scale object detection algorithm based on an improved YOLOv8 has been proposed. Firstly, a lightweight attention mechanism, Triplet Attention, is introduced to enhance the algorithm’s ability to extract multi-dimensional and multi-scale features, thereby improving the receptive capability of the feature maps. Secondly, the Diverse Branch Block (DBB) is integrated into the CSP Bottleneck with two Convolutions (C2F) module to strengthen the fusion of semantic information across different layers. Thirdly, a new decoupled detection head is proposed by redesigning the original network head based on the Diverse Branch Block module to improve detection accuracy and reduce missed and false detections. Finally, the Minimum Point Distance based Intersection-over-Union (MPDIoU) is used to replace the original YOLOv8 Complete Intersection-over-Union (CIoU) to accelerate the network’s training convergence. Comparative experiments and dehazing pre-processing tests were conducted on the RTTS and VOC-Fog datasets. Compared to the baseline YOLOv8 model, the improved algorithm achieved mean Average Precision (mAP) improvements of 4.6% and 3.8%, respectively. After defogging pre-processing, the mAP increased by 5.3% and 4.4%, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the improved algorithm exhibits high practicality and effectiveness in foggy traffic scenarios.
